The silence in the Ashford mansion was always loudest at midnight.

Aurora sat at the dining table, her fingers tracing the rim of her untouched teacup. The house was dark, save for the single chandelier hanging above her. Her husband, Damian, hadn’t come home. Again. It was their anniversary, but to Damian, she was nothing more than a quiet ornament he bought to secure his family's business alliance. She was used to the neglect. She was used to the coldness.

What she wasn't used to was the suffocating tension that entered the house the moment Adrian Ashford walked through the door.

The heavy front door clicked open, and the quiet of the foyer was shattered by firm, decisive footsteps. Aurora looked up as Adrian stepped into the light.

At only twenty-six, Adrian was already a force to be reckoned with. While Damian ran the family’s legacy estate, Adrian had built his own independent tech and venture capital empire from scratch. He was younger than Aurora by two years, but he carried an imposing, dominant presence that made everyone in a room hold their breath. He was strikingly handsome—sharp, dark eyes, a jawline that looked like it was carved from granite, and a cold, unapproachable aura that kept the world at a distance.

To Aurora, he had always been her "junior brother." When she first married into the family a year ago, she had tried to be warm to him, to treat him like family. But Adrian had immediately built a wall of ice between them. He barely spoke to her. He ignored her when they were in the same room. He constantly gave her the cold shoulder, treating her like she was completely invisible.

Tonight was no different.

Adrian didn't even look in her direction as he handed his coat to the butler. He loosened his silk tie with a slow, deliberate movement, his expression entirely blank.

"Adrian," Aurora called out softly, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "You're home late. Have you eaten?"

Adrian paused. He didn't turn around to look at her. He stood perfectly still for a long, agonizing second, his broad shoulders tensing under his tailored shirt.

"I ate at the office," he said. His voice was deep, raspy, and completely devoid of any warmth. It was the same icy tone he used to dismiss employees.

"I made some tea," Aurora said, standing up from the table. She wanted to be a good sister-in-law, to bridge the massive gap between them. She picked up the ceramic teapot. "I can pour you a cup. You look exhausted."

"No," Adrian snapped.

The harshness in his voice made Aurora freeze in her tracks. She looked at him, hurt flashing in her eyes. He finally turned his head slightly, his dark, piercing eyes locking onto hers for a fraction of a second before he looked away.

"I don't need tea. And I don't need you fussing over me, Aurora," he said coldly. "Go to bed."

He turned and began walking toward the grand staircase, his steps heavy and impatient.

Aurora’s grip on the teapot tightened. She was tired of the coldness from her husband, and she was tired of the unexplained hostility from the boy she had tried so hard to care for.

"Adrian, wait," she said, hurrying out of the dining room to intercept him at the base of the stairs. She blocked his path, looking up at him. "Why do you always do this?"

Adrian stopped. Because he was standing on the first step, he towered over her, casting a long shadow that completely enveloped her. His face was a mask of cold indifference, but if she looked closely, she could see a faint, dangerous pulse beating in his jaw.

"Do what?" he asked, his voice dangerously low.

"Treat me like I’m some kind of disease," Aurora said, her voice trembling slightly with a mix of frustration and exhaustion. "I am your sister-in-law. I’ve tried to be nice to you. I’ve tried to check on you when you work late. But you won't even look me in the eye. Did I do something to make you hate me so much?"

Hate.

The word seemed to strike a nerve deep inside him. Adrian’s eyes darkened, turning almost pitch-black under the dim foyer lights. For a second, the icy mask slipped, and a raw, terrifying intensity flared in his gaze. He took a single step down, bringing his face inches from hers.

"You think I hate you?" he whispered, his breath warm against her skin.

Aurora’s breath caught in her throat. The sudden change in his energy was suffocating. He didn't look like a junior brother right now. He looked like a predator who had finally cornered his prey. She took a instinctive step back, but Adrian’s hand suddenly shot out, gripping the wooden banister right next to her head, trapping her between his arm and the stairs.

"Adrian..." she breathed, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "What are you doing?"

"You know nothing, Aurora," Adrian said, his voice a low, gravelly growl. His eyes searched her face, his gaze dropping to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. The possessiveness in his stare was so thick it felt like a physical touch. "You walk around this house playing the dutiful wife to a man who doesn't even remember your name. You try to play the caring older sister to me. You think you can just smile and make everything okay."

"I was just trying to be kind," she whispered, her hands pressing against his chest to push him away.

But the moment her palms touched his chest, Adrian stiffened. Beneath his shirt, his heart was beating just as wildly as hers. His grip on the banister tightened so hard the wood groaned.

"Don't touch me," he commanded, his voice tight, as if he were fighting a war within himself. "I've told you before, Aurora. Stay away from me."

"Why?" she demanded, tears of frustration gathering in her eyes. "Why do I have to stay away from you?"

"Because you don't want to know what happens if I stop staying away from you," Adrian said.

The words were a promise, a threat, and a confession all wrapped into one. Aurora stared at him, completely stunned. She had always thought he was cold because he disliked her, because he found her presence annoying. But the raw, burning hunger in his eyes right now told a completely different story. It was a look of absolute, terrifying obsession.

Adrian saw the realization dawning on her face. Instantly, the shutters went back up. He pulled his hand back from the banister, stepping away from her as if her touch would burn him. The cold, distant businessman returned in a heartbeat.

"Go back to your room, Aurora," he said, his voice flat and empty once more. "Damian isn't coming home tonight. He’s at a hotel with his mistress."

The brutal, unvarnished truth hit her like a physical blow. Aurora gasped, her face turning pale. "What?"

"You wanted the truth," Adrian said, his eyes scanning her pale face with a cruel, protective agony. "Your husband doesn't want you. He never did."

Without waiting for her reply, Adrian turned and walked up the stairs, disappearing into the dark hallway of the second floor.

Aurora was left standing at the base of the staircase, the cold air of the foyer swirling around her. Her hands were shaking. She looked up into the darkness where Adrian had gone, her mind spinning.

For a year, she had lived in a loveless marriage, believing she was entirely alone. But tonight, she had seen the monster hiding behind her junior brother's cold eyes. And for the first time, she realized that the danger in this house didn't come from the husband who ignored her—it came from the boy who wanted to own her.

The blue light from the tablet screen cast a cold glare across the cabin. On the display, pulled straight from the terminal on the eighty-eighth floor of the Ashford Tower, was a high-resolution photo taken twenty-two minutes ago. It showed the heavy iron security gates of the upstate estate—where Leo and Liam were supposed to be sleeping safely. In the quiet cabin, the hum of the jet engines felt heavy.Adrian stared at the screen, his jaw locked tight. The relaxed corporate exterior was gone, replaced by pure, cold focus.Aurora leaned in, scanning the details. She didn't panic; she just looked at the facts."It’s a proxy feed," Aurora said, her voice steady. She reached out, resting her hand firmly on Adrian's arm to ground him. "Marcus and the Zurich group knew they couldn't beat you in a financial fight. This isn't an attack yet. It’s bait to make us panic and split our focus."Adrian looked down at her. He saw the absolute steadiness in her eyes. She wasn't someone who needed sh

The secure satellite comms unit in Adrian’s hand hummed with a harsh, abrasive static before Harrison’s voice cut back through the static, crisp and devoid of hesitation."The perimeter sensors on the eighty-eighth floor tripped three minutes ago," Harrison reported, his cadence clipped and sharp. "It’s not a brute-force digital attack from an outside proxy. Someone bypassed the elevator biometric overrides using an active executive credential."Across the length of the Valerian library, Marcus Vance let out a low, raspy chuckle against the stone pillar where Adrian still held him pinned by the collar. Blood trickled from a split lip where the impact had caught him, but his eyes burned with a manic, triumphant satisfaction."You thought the Zurich ping was the primary objective, Ashford," Marcus wheezed, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "The dead-man's switch wasn't just a data packet. It was a decoy to pull you out of Manhattan and freeze your security response team while

The amber light from the open computer terminal cast long, skeletal shadows across the vaulted wooden bookshelves of the Valerian estate’s private library.Sitting behind the massive, scarred mahogany desk was a man who had no business breathing New York or Zurich air.He wore a tailored charcoal overcoat that showed no dusting of the freezing alpine snow outside, his silver-streaked dark hair combed back with meticulous precision. As the heavy double doors groaned open, Marcus Vance didn't flinch. He simply rested his elbows on the polished wood, steepled his fingers, and offered a slow, venomous smile."I wondered how long it would take an Ashford to trace a breadcrumb across an ocean," Marcus said, his voice smooth, cultured, and entirely devoid of fear. "Though I must admit, I expected Adrian to come alone. Dragging the independent artist into a Swiss freezer seems rather counterproductive to your public relations campaign, Mr. Ashford."Adrian didn't answer with words. The moment

The private G650 sliced through the freezing stratosphere at Mach 0.92, carving a direct path across the Atlantic toward the snow-capped expanse of Central Europe.Inside the custom-paneled cabin, the ambient lighting had been dimmed to a muted amber glow. Outside the triple-paned reinforced glass windows, the endless sheet of black ocean gave way to the jagged, frost-glazed peaks of the Swiss Alps, standing like jagged iron teeth against the pre-dawn horizon.Aurora sat by the window, her dark silk blazer draped over the back of her seat, a single cup of black coffee cooling on the polished mahogany table before her. Below them, the Canton of Valais sprawled in absolute, frozen silence—a remote landscape of pine forests, steep ravines, and isolated luxury estates hidden far away from the prying eyes of European financial capitals.Across the aisle, Adrian sat with his long legs stretched out, his laptop resting open on his knees. He hadn't slept a wink since they left New York. The s

The heavy steel doors of the sub-level bunker remained sealed, locking out the rest of the world while the air inside grew thick with the static charge of unyielding tension.Harrison’s fingers danced across the multi-monitor console with mechanical precision. Streams of green cascading code and encrypted hexadecimal blocks blinked rapidly across the central display, reflecting off the lenses of his glasses as he hunted down the ghost signal originating from the Swiss Alps."The routing is bouncing through three distinct proxy layers in Zurich, Geneva, and Vaduz," Harrison reported, his voice entirely steady despite the high-stakes pressure. "Standard commercial scrubbers wouldn't even catch the ping. It’s military-grade obfuscation—the kind used by elite private intelligence syndicates before they wipe their own servers clean."Adrian stood motionless beside the console. His massive frame was braced, his hands flat against the cold steel edge, his broad shoulders shielding Aurora as

The hum of the Manhattan skyline filtered faintly through the triple-paned glass of the executive suite, but inside the private office, the silence was heavy enough to hear the steady tick of a minimalist wall clock.Aurora sat cross-legged on the deep leather sofa, a digital tablet balanced on her knees. The screen glowed with a sprawling, interactive layout of the Ashford Manor grounds upstate—specifically the south-facing rose gardens and the adjoining glass pavilion that she had reluctantly agreed to consider for the ceremony."If we use the glass pavilion for the reception," Aurora said, her voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room as she tapped a stylus against the screen, "we need to completely redesign the catering access roads. I am not having heavy delivery trucks chewing up the landscape directly beneath the studio windows."Across the room, standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows with a dark espresso in his hand, Adrian didn't look at the tablet. His pitch-black gaze
