Nathalia woke at 2:17am and could not go back to sleep.

This was not anxiety. She had checked, the way she checked things, methodically and without drama, and what she found was not the tight-chested restless quality of anxiety but something else entirely. Something that was simply too awake to sleep. Too present. Too aware of the specific weight of a night that was the last one before everything that was coming.

She lay in the dark for twenty-three minutes.

Then she got up.

She made tea a

The Brightside Centre was not what she had expected. Nathalia was not sure what she had expected exactly. Something institutional perhaps, something that wore its purpose on its exterior, the specific aesthetic of a building that existed to do important work and had not had the budget to be anything other than functional. The Brightside Centre was not that. It was a converted warehouse in the east side, three storeys of old brick that had been opened up and made light by someone who understood that the children who came here needed the building itself to tell them something. The windows were large. The entrance was warm. There were plants along the path to the front door, real ones, tended, the specific detail of a space that was cared for by people who understood that care was visible in small things. She stopped on the path. She looked at the building. She thought about a misfiled receipt on a Wednesday afternoon and an article she had read three times and sixty percent of an

She woke at seven. Not to an alarm. Just woke, cleanly, the way she woke on days when her body had decided that sleep was finished and the day was ready and there was no negotiating either of those facts. She lay in the light for a moment and looked at the ceiling and felt the specific quality of the morning. It felt like itself. That was all. It was just the morning. Her apartment, the light coming through the window at the angle it always came through on Saturday mornings, the sound of the city outside doing its weekend version of itself, quieter than the weekday version, more human. She lay in it for a moment and let it be ordinary before it became everything else. Then she got up. She made tea. She sat at her table. The gala invitation was still there. She had been looking at it for three weeks and she looked at it now for the last time before the evening made it past tense. A small card that had been placed on her desk by a man who was getting there in the only way he kne

She lay in the dark for twenty-three minutes. Then she got up. She made tea at her table. She did not turn on many lights. Just the small one above the kitchen counter, the one that made the apartment feel like itself rather than like a stage set for living. She sat at her table with the tea and looked at the gala invitation she had been looking at for three weeks and felt the specific and significant quality of the night before something. Not dread. Not even anticipation exactly. Just presence. The full presence of someone who had arrived somewhere after a long journe

Friday arrived with the specific quality of a day that knew it was the last one before something. Not anxious. Not heavy. Just aware of itself in the way that days before significant things were aware of themselves, carrying a quality of heightened presence that made ordinary things feel slightly more textured than usual. The coffee tasted more like coffee. The morning light through the subway window was more specifically golden. The sound of the city getting into its Friday stride had a different quality to it, or she was listening differently, which amounted to the same thing. She arrived at 7:14am. The floor was quiet in the early morning way she had come to love over nine weeks of arriving before it became itself. She set her bag down. She made her coffee. She sat at her desk and opened her laptop and looked at her emails and understood, reading through them, that today was going to be a different kind of day from anything that had come before it. Not because of the gala tomo

Nathan looked at her. "Legally the vote can be called. Whether it succeeds depends on the remaining board members and on how the situation is managed in the next forty-eight hours." He paused. "The coalition is three members including Whitmore. Damien has five who are solidly in support. There are four who are undecided. If Whitmore can move two of the undecided four in the next forty-eight hours the vote becomes genuinely threatening." She sat with this. Four undecided board members. Forty-eight hours. A speech that was supposed to be an act of courage being positioned as evidence of instability. She thought about Richard Cole. She thought about Richard and Whitmore and the alliance that had been building for months, two men who wanted different pieces of the same thing finding each other and deciding to be useful to each other. She thought about timing. Two days before the gala. "He wants Damien to cancel the speech," she said. Nathan looked at her. "He wants him to either c

The letter arrived on a Thursday morning. Not digitally. Not through the Nexus system or the board communication channel or any of the official pathways that corporate correspondence was supposed to travel. It arrived physically, on paper, in an envelope with Gerald Whitmore's name embossed on the flap, delivered by hand to the Cole Industries reception desk at eight fourteen in the morning by a man in a dark suit who left without giving his name. Nathalia knew this because Robert told her when she came through the lobby at 7:53 and Robert, who had been on the morning desk for eleven years and who noticed everything that happened in that lobby with the specific comprehensive attention of someone who took his job seriously, had flagged it as unusual before the envelope had made it to the forty-second floor. She thanked him. She took the elevator up. She sat at her desk. At 8:17 the envelope arrived via the internal mail system, routed to her desk because all physical corresponde
