LOGINPOWER BEGINS WITH BOUNDARIES;
The backlash comes quietly.
A board member questioning my authority. A private meeting is cancelled without explanation. I notice every detail but said nothing.
I adjust.
By the end of the week, every delay had been rerouted, every question answered, every silence exposed. Still - I feel it… Something gathering.
Late that night, I stand by my window, dress in black silk, city lights reflecting in my eyes.
My phone vibrate.
MARCUS: We need to talk.
I didn't reply .
Another message appear - unknown number.
UNKNOWN: They're watching you now
I type back calmly.
ME: Let them.
The reply comes seconds later.
UNKNOWN: Careful. Queen's only attract knives.
I look at my reflection. A small smile curves my lips.
ME: Let them.
I set the phone down. Tomorrow, i will step into a world my past self had never been allowed to touch . And this time - I will wear black not as mourning… But as warning.
…..
The private elevator beneath the Carter estate had not been used in years.
Most of the family believes it had been sealed after Aya stepped away from active control. Others thought it was merely symbolic - an echo of darker, older Carter legacy best forgotten.
I know better.
The elevator door slide open with a mute chime, revealing a long corridor lit by recessed amber lights. The walls are lined with soundproof panels and old framed documents - property deeds ,sealed contracts, and security clearance bearing the Carter crest.
This is not nostalgia… This is infrastructure.
Aya step out first, her cane tapping lightly against the polish floor. She did not look back to see if I follow. She already knows.
I walk beside her, spine straight, expression compose, dress in black from collar to heel …. Gone is the hesitant posture. This place did not belong to weak women.
At the end of the corridor stands two men in dark suits. They straighten instantly when they see Aya.
" She's here," Aya said calmly," open the door "
One of the men press his palm against a biometric scanner. A low hum follows, then a heavy steel door slide open.
Inside is a boardroom - smaller than the one at Carter holdings, but infinitely more intimidating.
Four men and one woman stands, i enter.
They are not family… They are CONTROL.
Aya gesture to me. " This is my granddaughter".
Silence falls.
The woman - green eyes, mid-thirties, hair pulls back severally - studies me closely. " She looks... different ".
" She survived", Aya reply. " that tends to change people."
I met their gaze without flinching.
" I didn't come to inherit stories," I said evenly. " I came to take responsibility."
One of the men scoff softly. " Responsibility for what, exactly?"
Aya turns her head slightly. " For what I and my husband built. And what you protected."
I place both hands on the table.
" Carter Holdings handles the public face", I said." Finance, property, development . Clean. Legal. Predictable. " I pause. " But this - " my eyes sweeps the room " - this is the spine . Private security contracts. Assets recovery. Silent partnership. Risk management for people who don't trust courts ."
The woman smiles faintly." You've done your homework."
" I lived the consequences of ignorance once," I reply." Never again ."
Aya nods. " Then let's not waste time. "
She sit so did I.
That single act shifted the room.
…..
I listen as the woman across the table speaks .
" We maintain private security for selected families, corporations and political intermediaries," she said.
I nod. " Then let's begin earning it ."
The man seated at her left finally speaks. His voice is low, measured , carrying the weight of habit. " You're asking for authority over operations that doesn't forgive mistakes."
" I'm not asking" I reply. " Am assuming responsibility."
A pause follows… Aya cane taps once against the floor.
" She already understand the price," Aya said." What she needs now is clarity."
The woman across the table leans forward slightly. " Then here it is. The Carter inside business operates on three pillars."
She raises one finger ." Private security. Not guards - strategists . People who prevent crises before they become public."
A second finger. " Assets recovery. Discreet enforcement when contracts are broken and courts are too slow."
A third." Silent partnership. Influence without ownership."
I absorb every word. " And loyalty?" I ask again.
The woman lips curves faintly." Loyalty follows power. Power follows competence."
I straighten. " Then give me a test."
This draws their attention fully. " A test ?" one of the men echo.
" Yes", I said." Something immediate. Something real."
Aya smile, slow and approving. The woman tap a tablet on the table and turns it towards me.
" A shipment was intercepted, three hours ago. Private security equipment. High value. Someone inside tipped off the interceptors."
I study the data. Routes .Timelines. Names partially redacted.
" And you think? ." I ask.
" That whosoever ordered the interference is probing us," the woman said. " Or you."
My eyes lifts ." Then let them watch."
I push the tablet back. " Restore the shipment. Quietly. And trace who benefits from the delay - not who ordered it."
The man to my left raise an eyebrow." That's unconventional."
"So is underestimating me," I reply calmly.
Silence follows… Then Aya speaks. “Do it."
The decision is made.
…..
The underground board room empty slowly.
As the door seal shut, Aya turns to me. "You didn't hesitate," she said.
" I couldn't afford to." I reply.
Aya studies me for a long moment. " They will test you again. "
I nod, "I know.”
We walk back towards the elevator when footsteps approach from the corridor ahead.
A man steps in view.
Tall. Broad-shoulder. Dress simply in black, no long insignia, no unnecessary movement. His presence is quiet - but absolute.
He stops a few feet away and incline his head slightly.
"Ms. Carter," he said. " I'm Evan Cross.”
I assess him instantly, balance. awareness, stillness. Something about him looks different… Something I couldn't describe. A rare feeling.
"My grandmother sent for you," I said.
" Yes," Evan reply " she said you'd need someone who doesn't flinch."
I met his gaze. " Do you?"
"No" he said simply.
Aya nods. " He's yours now."
I didn't question it.
"Good," I said. " Because things are about to get loud."
Evan expression didn't change - but his attention sharpens.
In the car, heading back to Carter Holdings.
I remove my earrings slowly, deliberately.
My phone buzz .
UNKNOWN: Shipment restored. Interceptor identified .
My finger pause.
ME: Who?
The reply took longer this time.
UNKNOWN: Someone close to Marcus Blackwood.
My lips curves - not in satisfaction, but in confirmation. I look at my reflection. The soft woman in white is gone. In my place stands someone who understands leverage.

At the senior assistants office, Judy stares at her own phone as a message appears.
PRIVATE ALERT: Operation failed. Trace detected.
Her breath catches. For the first time, doubt crept in.
"Amanda," she whispers.
…..
I leave the office few hours later.
I adjust the sleeves of my black suit jacket as I step out of the company building. Calm. Untouchable.
Across the parking lot, reporters are gathering, whispers spreading like wildfire.
“She changed her style?”
“Why the change?”
“Is this all planned?”
The car door opens. The driver stands respectfully beside it.
“Home, Miss?”
I pause… For a brief second, something feel off. The wind has gone still… Too still. My heels clicks once against the pavement.
Then - A sharp crack split through the air.
Gunshot.
The sound echoes violently across the parking lot. Screams erupts. Glass shatters.
I feel something brush past my shoulder - Or did it hit me? The world tilts, my body stumbles. Black fabric flutters in slow motion as I fall -
And before everything went dark, I hear someone shout my name.
“Amanda?”
SOME THREAT'S ANNOUNCE THEMSELVES. OTHERS ARRIVE DRESSED AS HELP;Outside, the night air feels cool against my skin.Evan opens the door silently and the car pulls away, I finally exhale.“You ended it,” Evan said.“Yes,” I reply. “Exactly how it needed to end.”My phone buzz.MARCUS: What did you just do?I didn't reply.Once, I had begged for that woman's approval. Tonight, I have taken away her peace. My phone buzz again.UNKNOWN NUMBER: You didn't just refuse them. You humiliated them.I type back calmly.ME: Some houses deserves cracks.I turn off my phone. THERE IS ONLY ONE WINNER IN A GAME;The next morning, Aya calls me to inform me about Marcus's plan.“Blackwood is moving” Aya said calmly over the phone. “His mother will sermon you.”My fingers pause around my tea cup. “Sermon?”“Yes,” Aya reply. “She believes obedience is a virtue.”I smile faintly. “Then she'll be disappointed.”Aya studies my voice. “You remember what happened before.”“I do,” I said. “Very clearly.”“Do you intend to protect yourself?”I look up. “No.”Aya gaze, not loud but sharp enough. She didn't expect my answer.“I intend to use it,” I continue, smiling faintly. “The memory. The hu
SOME INVITATIONS ARE NOT MEANT TO HONOR YOU - ONLY TO MEASURE YOU;On the bed is a single black envelope with no name written on it. My pulse did not race. I step forward and pick it up.Inside is one photograph. My fingers tightens. It is a picture of me from earlier that day, right before the gunshot. Taken from behind. Close enough to see the fabric of my suit.Close enough to know - Whoever sent it has been watching. And at the bottom of the photo, written in red ink.“Next time, I won't miss.”My fingers tightens around the photograph. The sharp scent of gunpowder burns in my lungs. For a second, everything moves in slow motion - the horrifying faces of the reporters, the shatter car window, the echo of the gunshot still vibrating in the air. Then - Pain… Not deep. Not tearing, but sharp enough to steal my breath.
