NOT ALL CHANGES ANNOUNCE THEMSELVES ;

The room falls silent.

The chandelier above us glow softly casting golden light over the polish marble floor. I did not flinch.

Not a blink.

Not a sharp inhale.

Not even the faintest tremor in my finger, I look at Judy.

In my first life, this single question would have shattered my composure. I would have panicked. Stammered. Revealed everything with her eyes alone.

But this is a second chance.

I set my teacup down gently, the porcelain barely making a sound against the saucer.

“What if I did?” I said calmly.

Judy blinks. For a split second - just one - something flickers in her eyes. Surprise? Fear? then she chuckles.

A bright, careless chuckle that echoes too loudly in the luxurious sitting room.

“Reborn? Please,” Judy waves her hand dismissively. “Amanda, you read too many novels. What's next? You're going to tell me you remember your past life too?”

Her laugh softens into giggles, as if I have just told her the funniest joke.

Judy always do this. Probe. Test. Hide the knife inside a sweet smile.

In my first life, I have never notice how sharp Judy's eyes becomes when she thought no one was looking but I am looking now.

“Chill,” Judy continues on, walking back to the velvet sofa. “You've just changed a little. It's strange that's all.”

Changed.

Yes… I have change. I no longer trust blindly… I no longer hand over power so easily… I no longer beg for affection.

I rise from my seat with effortless grace. My heels clicking softly against the marble floor and I adjust the sleeves of my white blouse.

My expression remains serene - almost bored. “ If feeling smarter makes you uncomfortable,” I said lightly. “ You should get used to it, little sister.”

Judy's smile freeze for half a heartbeat but I did not wait to see it fully crack.

I turn and walk away. Each step is steady, measure, control. Behind me, Judy chuckles again - softer this time.

“As if anyone can be reborn,” Judy mutters under her breath.

I hear it but I didn't stop walking because whether Judy believes it or not… I remember the betrayal, the blood on the cold floor and I remember dying alone. And this time - Am not going to die quietly.

The large doors of the mansion close behind me as i step into the corridor, my face calm, but my eyes burns with a secret Judy can never understand.

If I am reborn… Then this life belongs to me.

That night, I sleep peacefully for the first time since my rebirth because doubt no longer lives in my heart… Only strategy did.

And by morning, something has change, the wardrobe door stands open.

I look at the rows of white dresses I once favoured - soft fabrics , gentle cuts, sleeves that suggested modesty rather than confidence. In another life, I had believe purity made people kind… It doesn't.

I reach for the hangers and remove them one by one, laying the dresses carefully on the bed. Not angrily. Not regretfully… Deliberately.

White has once feel safe but now it feels like an invitation.

I turn towards the other side of the room, where new garment wait's - structure black dresses, clean lines, tailored silhouettes. Clothes chosen not to please, but to define space .

I select one.

As I dress, something inside me settle. The mirror reflects a woman I barely recognize - not because she looks cruel, but because her looks decided .

I pick up the scissors. No tears. No hesitation. The soft length of my hair falls to the ground in silence. Shorter and intentional.

Later that afternoon, I sit alone in a quiet clinic room.

" This will be quick," the doctor said gently.

I nod.

The mole on my face had never bothered me - until I remember Marcus touching it once and saying, " it makes you look gentle."

Gentle has been a weakness he learned to exploit.

When it was done, I touch the smooth skin thoughtfully . It isn't about erasing myself, It is about choosing what remains.

The maids freeze when I step out of the room.

“Miss… are you going somewhere important today?” A maid ask nervously.

I adjust my cufflinks. “Yes” I said calmly. “ To bury something.”

…..

Carter holdings is unusually loud this morning. A surprise audit review, an unexpected investor visit, whispers running faster than facts.

I step out of the elevator dress in black. Not dramatic. Not excessive… Control.

The room went quite. Conversations stops mid-sentence. People turn instinctively - not because I demand attention, but because my presence claims it.

I walk at an unhurried pace, heels steady, gaze forward.

Andrea stands abruptly. " Ms. Carter - "

"Reschedule my afternoon," I said calmly. " I'll take the audit meeting now."

"Yes ma'am."

Inside the boardroom, heads turn. Marcus is already there, his smile appear on instinct - and then freeze.

I didn't look like the woman he remembers, the softness is gone. In it's place is something unreadable.

His eyes follows me as I take my seat at the head of the table.

"Amanda" he said carefully, " You look… different."

"So do circumstances," I reply evenly.

Judy enters moment later, she stops short. Her gaze sweeps over me - my hair , now short and sharper , the absence of the familiar mark on my face , the black dress that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

"You changed your style." Judy said lightly.

I met her eyes." I refined it"

The meeting begins.

I speak less than anyone else in the room. Yet every decision aligns around silence.

When the audit lead hesitate, I wait . When a director over explains , I raise a single finger.

Enough.

By the time the meeting ends, the direction is clear now.The authority is unquestionable. As people file out Marcus fingers. " You didn't tell me you were planning this." he said quietly.

" I don't plan publicly anymore," I reply.

Judy watches from the doorway. Unease flickering beneath my smile.

I gather my files, unhurried. I didn't look back .

That evening, my grandmother studies me carefully.

 "You choose black," Aya said.

I nod . " You know, white ask people to protect me . But black reminds them I don't need it , I don't need protections ".

Aya's gaze softens slightly ." And how do you feel ?"

I consider the question then answer. " Visible," I said " and unreachable " .

Aya smile. " Good ," she said . “ But don't forget, queens only attracts knives.”

I drop the tea cup in the table silently. Aya is right…. Queens only attracts knives. And a though runs through my mind instantly.

What are they planning to do to me now?
