SCARLETT FOSTER

The light tap from the driver on the front window snapped the intense spell hanging between us.

Caleb slowly pulled his hand back, though his burning gaze lingered on my face for a heartbeat longer before he turned toward the door. The driver slid into the front seat, quietly offering a brief apology before turning the key in the ignition.

The engine hummed to life, and the Maybach pulled away from the rain-swept harbor overlook, gliding smoothly onto the freshly cleared highway.

Neither of us spoke a word for the rest of the drive. The weight of his confession hung heavily in the air, thick and suffocating. My head was spinning. Five years of bitterness, grief, and self-doubt had built a solid wall around my heart, and Caleb had just completely dismantled it with a single truth.

I leaned back against the leather headrest, staring out at the blurred streetlights. Every instinct I had urged me to protect myself, to keep that wall up at all costs. But how could I treat him like a villain when he had sacrificed his own happiness to keep me safe from harm?

When the car finally pulled up to the curb outside my apartment building, the rain had settled into a soft, steady drizzle.

I reached for the door handle, eager to escape the heavy tension inside the cabin. "Thank you for the ride, Mr. Montgomery."

Before I could push the door open, Caleb grabbed my wrist. His grip was firm yet surprisingly gentle, his thumb resting right against my racing pulse.

"Scarlett, wait," he said softly.

I froze, turning my head to look at him. "It's late, Caleb. I need to get some sleep. We have early meetings tomorrow."

Instead of letting go, Caleb unbuckled his seatbelt and shifted closer across the leather seat. The sheer power of his presence flooded my senses. The subtle scent of sandalwood, the warmth radiating from his body, the intensity in those storm-gray eyes—it threatened to pull me completely under.

"You're running again," he said, his voice dropping to a low, velvet hum that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"I'm not running. I'm being realistic," I countered, though my voice sounded far less confident than I wanted. "Hearing the truth doesn't magically erase five years of pain, Caleb. It doesn't undo the nights I cried myself to sleep thinking I was disposable to you."

"I know," he murmured, his thumb lightly caressing the sensitive skin on the inside of my wrist. "I know I hurt you. I know I left scars that haven't healed yet. And I will spend every single day of the rest of my life making up for it if you give me the chance."

My heart pounded so hard against my ribs I was sure he could feel it through my sleeve. "Caleb, please... don't do this."

"Don't do what?" he asked, leaning in closer. His gaze dropped down to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes with raw, unfiltered hunger. "Don't touch you? Don't look at you like you're the only person in this room?"

He lifted his free hand, his fingers gently tracing the line of my jaw, tilting my face slightly upward. The proximity was intoxicating. My breath hitched in my throat as his face slid agonizingly close to mine. I could feel the warm brush of his breath against my skin.

For a terrifying, exhilarating second, I thought he was going to kiss me. My body instinctively leaned into his touch, every cell in me remembering how perfectly we used to fit together. The old, dormant love I had fought so hard to bury surged back to the surface with frightening speed.

Caleb paused, his lips resting a fraction of an inch from mine. He hovered there, giving me space, testing my limits, letting the heat between us build until the silence practically crackled.

I closed my eyes, trembling under the sheer weight of his presence. I was torn completely in half—part of me wanted to pull him close and drown in the familiarity of his arms, while the other part screamed at me to step back before I got completely destroyed all over again.

Caleb brushed his lips lightly against the corner of my mouth—a soft, agonizingly brief whisper of a touch that made my knees weak.

Then, he leaned into my ear, his deep voice carrying a sharp, unwavering promise that shattered the last bit of my composure.

"I let you walk away once, Scarlett," he whispered, his grip tightening just enough to pull me a fraction closer. "I won't make that mistake twice."

He pulled back slowly, releasing my jaw and freeing my wrist, though his gray eyes stayed locked onto mine, burning with absolute conviction.

Without saying another word, I pushed the car door open, stepped out into the cool night air, and hurried into the lobby of my building without looking back.

  • The Billionaire's Greatest Regret   CHAPTER 8

SCARLETT FOSTERBy six-thirty the following evening, my small apartment looked like a tornado had hit it.Dresses were scattered across my bed—most of them old, casual, or completely unsuitable for a high-society charity gala. I had spent nearly an hour panicking over what to wear until a courier knocked on my door at five o'clock, delivering a sleek black box wrapped in a silk ribbon.Inside was a floor-length evening dress in a deep emerald shade, made of heavy, liquid silk that fell effortlessly over my curves. There was no note inside, but I didn't need one. The understated elegance of the dress had Caleb’s signature written all over it.I had almost sent it back with the courier out of pure stubbornness. But looking at my alternative—a faded cocktail dress with a tiny tear along the side seam—I had to swallow my pride once again. When the black sedan pulled up to the curb at seven sharp, I stepped out onto the sidewalk,

  • The Billionaire's Greatest Regret   CHAPTER 7

SCARLETT FOSTERThe ten o'clock board meeting went on for two excruciating hours.I sat at the smaller side desk inside the grand conference room, my fingers flying across my laptop keyboard as I took detailed minutes. Across the long mahogany table, Caleb presided over the meeting with effortless authority. He shot down weak proposals with quiet efficiency and dismantled aggressive questions from older investors without missing a beat.Sitting directly to his right was Julianna Vance. Every time Caleb spoke, she watched him with a proprietary gleam in her eyes, leaning in just a little too close whenever she presented her department’s slides.I kept my head down and focused entirely on my screen. I told myself I didn't care. Julianna was a wealthy heiress, a senior board member, and part of the high-society world Caleb now belonged to. It made complete sense for her to be by his side. But every time her laughter echoed softly across the room at one of his subtle remarks, a tiny, anno

  • The Billionaire's Greatest Regret   CHAPTER 6

SCARLETT FOSTERI didn't sleep a single wink that night.Every time I closed my eyes, Caleb’s confession echoed in the dark space of my tiny apartment. His words about his father’s debts, the threats against my life, and the sheer agony in his gray eyes kept looping in my head like a broken recording.Part of me—the hurt, bitter part—wanted to believe it was just a smooth excuse crafted by a powerful man who always got what he wanted. But another part of me knew Caleb. I knew the tone of his voice when he was laying his soul bare. He hadn't lied to me. He had sacrificed his own happiness to keep a target off my back.By seven in the morning, I was already standing in front of my bathroom mirror, carefully applying extra concealer under my eyes to hide the heavy dark circles."You are here to do a job, Scarlett," I told my reflection, smoothing down the lapels of my tailored beige blazer. "You need the paycheck. Keep your head down, do your work, and don't get swept up in the past."Wh

  • The Billionaire's Greatest Regret   CHAPTER 4

SCARLETT FOSTERThe heavy rain outside matched the stormy atmosphere inside the back seat of the Maybach. It was nearly eleven in the evening. The high-stakes dinner with Montgomery Enterprises’ overseas investors had been an absolute minefield, but we survived it. I spent the entire night seamlessly managing Caleb’s schedule, pulling up financial statistics at a moment's notice, and intercepting passive-aggressive remarks from greedy board members.Caleb had played the role of the sharp, ruthless CEO flawlessly. But now, as the car navigated through the rain-slicked streets of the city, the powerful corporate titan looked thoroughly exhausted. He sat beside me, his tie completely discarded, the top three buttons of his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned. He leaned his head back against the leather headrest, his dark eyes fixed on the rain streaming down the tinted window.I kept my body pressed against the passenger door, keeping as much space between us as possible. • The Billionaire's Greatest Regret   CHAPTER 3

SCARLETT FOSTERThe clock on the wall read six-fifteen in the evening. The bustling noise of the corporate office had gradually died down, replaced by the low hum of vacuum cleaners in the hallway. My first official day as the executive assistant to the CEO of Montgomery Enterprises was finally over—or so I had naively hoped.I was packing my belongings into my purse when the phone on my desk rang. The sharp, mechanical chime echoed through the empty reception area.I took a deep breath, picking up the receiver. "Scarlett Foster speaking.""My office. Now," Caleb’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and commanding, before the line cut out with a dull click.I stared at the receiver for a second, my pulse instantly spiking. All day, I had managed to keep my distance. I had sorted through his emails, scheduled his calls, and coordinated his meetings with surgical precision, keeping every interaction cold, polite, and brief. I had treated him purely as my boss, pretending that the gho
