I just managed to get through dinner without lashing out.
Damian’s mother sat at the head of the grand dining table, elegant and stately, eyeing me as if I were a stray cat who had wandered into her oh-so-perfect life.
Leo remained blissfully unaware, chatting gaily with Damian about the fish pond and the flowers, but I could feel the unsaid words of the three adults in the room.
It was suffocating.
My appetite had long since abandoned me, and I picked at my food. Damian, meanwhile, ate with wild abandon.
Finally, his mother spoke. “So, Miss Carter”
“Aria”, I corrected stiffly.
Her lips curled slightly. “Aria. “How much longer are you going to play this game?”
I stilled. “What game?”
She pinkie-fingered her silverware onto the floor. “The game in which you pretend you have control. Where you pretend you’re not at my son’s mercy.”
My jaw clenched. “I don’t play games when it comes to protecting my son.”
Her gaze sharpened. “Neither do I.”
The room fell dead silent for a moment.
Then she sighed and lifted her glass of wine. “Damian, darling, I hope you’ll be smart about this. The boy needs stability. If you’ve been holding her here for other reasons, I advise you to think again.”
I froze, heat flooding my cheeks.
To my great surprise, Damian chuckled. “Mother, if you believe I will treat Aria like a toy I will throw away when I’ve grown bored of playing with her, you should know by now that I do not play at all with things I intend to throw away.”
His tone was light, but there was an unmistakable edge underneath.
His mother raised a brow. “Interesting use of language.”
I pushed my chair back. “Excuse me.”
I didn’t wait for permission. I needed air.
I charged down the hallway, heart racing, fists balled at my sides.
I hated this.
I hated how she spoke to me as though I were a piece of furniture in Damian’s life.
Hated the way he spoke about me, like I was property.
I needed to leave.
I had to get Leo out of this madness before it consumed us.
But how?
I climbed to the huge front doors and pressed my hand up against the cold wood, my head spinning.
Then, suddenly, I felt him.
Damian.
The heat left in his wake, heat directed toward my body, seeped into my back before he even pressed his body to mine.
“You always run when things don’t go your way,” he said softly.
I wheeled around, fury igniting in my chest. “I’m not running.”
He was standing in the doorframe, arms crossed, dark amusement on his face. “No?”
I glared at him. “Your mother”
“is testing you.”
I hesitated.
He advanced a step and dropped his voice. “She wants to see if you break.”
I swallowed. “And if I do?”
A very unreadable look passed over his eyes. “Then she’ll know you don’t live here.”
A shiver ran down my spine.
I didn’t know if that was a warning or a promise.
A vacuum of silence opened between us, weighted and crackling.
Then, Damian tilted his head. “You’re afraid.”
I scoffed. “Of your mother? No.”
He smirked. “No. You’re afraid of me.”
I stiffened. “You don’t scare me.”
Liar.
He took another step, closing the space between us, and his scent, something dark and heady, curled around me.
“Then why are you trembling?” He murmured, gliding a finger along my jaw.
A sharp breath tore in and through me, a traitorous response.
His lips twitched, his hand sliding low onto my waist, the action possessive yet teasing.
“You can keep pretending, Aria,” he said, in a whisper. “But we both know the truth.”
My throat was dry. “And what’s that?”
His mouth was inches from mine, and I could feel the heat of his breath.
“That you want me.”
The reaction had me jerking back, my heart crashing against my ribs.
“You’re insane,” I said, and turned on my heels and stormed up the stairs.
His laughter followed me.
And worse?
So did the bitter truth of his words.
Because, deep down, I knew he was right.
And that scared me more than anything.
I slammed the bedroom door behind me and leaned against it as if my back could keep Damian out of my head.
My heart was still racing.
The way he’d looked at me as though he saw straight through my defenses, straight through the fear, straight through the anger took my breath away.
Damn him.
I took a long breath and tried to concentrate. I wasn’t here for him. I had not come here to be caught in whatever game he was playing.
I was here for Leo.
I walked across the room, where I pushed open the balcony doors to breathe in the cool night air. The city unfolded below me, lights twinkling like stars in the void.
I could leave.
I could take Leo and run.
But where?
Damian had been clear he would not let us go.
And worse... I wasn't so sure I wanted to leave.
I gritted my teeth, disgusted with the weakness in me.
I flinched at a soft knock at the door.
I turned, pulse spiking. “Who is it?”
There was a pause. Then
“It’s me.”
Damian.
I exhaled sharply. “Go away.”
Silence.
Then, the door handle turned.
I fell forward and braced against it. “I said go away!”
A hearty laugh came from the other side. “Are you scared to let me in, Aria?”
“No,” I lied.
“Then open the door.”
I hesitated.
I should have ignored him. Should have walked away.
Instead, I was unlocking the door just enough to meet his gaze.
His arms were folded as he leaned against the door frame, a smirk curling his lip.
“Good girl.”
Something inside me flared with heat — anger, embarrassment, something I wouldn’t name.
I clenched my jaw. “What do you want, Damian?”
He stared at me for a long moment, something dark passing through his expression.
Then he was leaning in; his fingers grazed my cheek, his touch impossibly gentle.
“I want you to stop pretending.
My breath hitched.
He took a step in, his scent heady. “You can’t stop me because I want you to admit that you feel this too.”
I swallowed hard. “You’re wrong.”
His lips curved. “Am I?”
I hated how close he was. Loathed the way my body responded to him, the way the skin smoked where he brushed me.
I should have pulled away.
But I didn’t.
And neither did he.
I should have shut the door in his face.I should have pushed him away, told him to get away from me, and reminded him I wasn’t in town for this. But I didn’t.I felt the world expand into the space between us as Damian inched closer, just enough for me to feel the heat rising off his body as my breath caught in my throat."You’re lying," he murmured.I swallowed hard. "About what?"His fingers skimmed over my jaw, a whispering caress that had me shivering in response, whether I wanted to or not. "About not wanting me."The heat curling in my stomach, I willed myself to hold his gaze, to stand against it. “You think you can scare me into admitting to something that’s not true?”He chuckled, low and amused. “I do not need to terrorize you, Aria. I just need to wait.""Wait for what?" I snapped.“For that moment you can no longer lie to yourself.”I hated how smug he looked. How confident. How he pretended he already knew how this would go.I breathed slowly and stepped back, clutching
I needed to get out of this house.Away from Damian. Away from his mother. From this tight stranglehold, they were trying to have on my life. But the thing was there was nowhere else for me to go.And Damian knew that.Once I put Leo to bed with a book, I paced the small apartment so my mind wouldn’t race.I needed a plan.I couldn’t sit here and wait for Damian to determine my fate. But all roads lead back to the same bitter fact: I was broke, homeless, and had no real way of putting up a fight against his influence.Maybe I could run again, but after everything, would I be able to?Would he let me?I shook the thought away.I was not his prisoner.I refused to be.A knock on the door caused me to freeze.I knew who it was before I even twisted the knob.Damian loomed in the frame, one hand braced against it, a full-body scan of my flushed face that made me feel like he already knew precisely what was going through my head."We need to talk," he said.I folded my arms. Aria. The air turned heavy. Smoke was present everywhere I breathed. It felt like an explosion. My fingers trembled as I faced the mother of Dolphin, who was Daisy's mother. Her creepy smile signaled that she had already planned out ten harms to inflict pain, including the most painful one. “You should be,” she whispered. The moment Damian stepped between us, I was almost caught. "Enough," he growled bitterly. But she didn't flinch. Not a single drop of sweat. "Do you think this little girl is worthy of our respect, Damian?". I swallowed hard. Little girl. Not a woman. Not equal. Not even human. Just a thing. Something she could erase. “Shut up on her like that,” Damian
“Aria”. Damian's voice echoed with the warmth of his thunder. I turned, relief flooding me. He stood across the garden, his eyes fixed on Tyler. My gratitude was unmatched. Tyler's gaze widened to look at me, and then towards Damian. "This won't endure.". Girls like her? They break. And when she does”. The speed at which Damian moved was almost non-existent to me. Aria. “She knows.”. My thoughts were haunted by those two words, echoing in my mind. As I rose from the ground, I slowly pulled on the covers. Damian remained motionless with his back in place and his muscles were tightened beneath him. Despite my knowledge, I still had to ask the question "Who?". With a grimace in his eyes, he gazed over his shoulder and acknowledged "I am my mother.". My heart dropped. I asked, "What is she aware of?" with great care. “She knows about us. "I confessed to taking money from him," I said. "To escape.". He was keeping tabs on all the stories, so I took $5,000. There was no indication of a bad feeling in my mind during that time. I used it to disappear.”. There was an extended silence from Damian. "You did what you had to do.". My eyes were filled with tears. "Don't you think I'm a bad person?". He gave a slow, shaken head. "No," he replied. I think you're a survivor. I think you're brave.”. He raised his hand towards my cheek and gently scraped a tear from my skin. “I love you,” he said. I froze. “You… what?”. “I love you, Aria. That hasn't changed. Not after your past. Not after tonight.”. Exactly as that, an internal object broke loose for me. I embraced him, keeping my face in his neck. “I have affection for you as well.” Then, she let out an expression. For a prolonged duration, we simply maintained our relationship. But peace was short-lived. A call was placed on Damian later that night. As I observed,
I ran.My breath scorched in my lungs, my heart crashing against my ribs like a drum as I held my son’s small hand. “Keep going, Leo,” I gasped, willing my legs to move more quickly.Heavy footsteps echoed behind us. I knew that they were getting closer. I had no reason to glance back for reassurance. All day, I had felt their eyes on me, watching, waiting — until they finally made their move. And now Damian Sinclair’s men were here to steal it all away.Leo whined, falling behind. “Mommy, I’m tired.”I sat stiff as a board in the backseat of Damian’s luxury SUV, my fists balled so tightly my nails cut into my palms. Leo sat next to me, his tiny frame wedged against mine, his large eyes alternating between me and the man dining across the table.Damian.He sat with his legs crossed, his piercing blue eyes boring into me. He seemed completely relaxed, as if abducting me and my son was merely a business deal.I swallowed, breathing through the tension. I needed to be calm for Leo. There
Damian and I stepped inside the massive mansion with his hand steady on the small of my back, and I gritted my teeth. The moment we arrived, all that burden of my past sunk me.The towering ceilings. The giant chandelier shimmered like a thousand little stars. The click of the marble floors below our feet cost thousands.Nothing had changed.Except for me.I was no longer that frightened little girl who used to live in that house, looking for a way out. Yet standing next to Damian, I still experienced that overwhelming sense of entrapment.Leo’s little fingers gripped my dress tightly. I could feel how much he hesitated, how scared he was. I crouched next to him, smoothing his tangled brown curls from his face.“It’s O.K., baby,” I murmured. “Mommy’s right here.”His lip trembled. “I don’t like it here.”Neither do I.Before I could respond, Damian’s low voice sliced through the air. “You’ll get used to it.”I shot him a glare. “He’s not staying here.”His face was inscrutable, but th

I hated how my skin was still buzzing from Damian’s touch. His few words—“I will”— filled me with dread. Reverberated in my mind long after he’d walked away. But more than anything, I hated that somewhere in my soul of souls, the treacherous part of me just wanted to know what freedom would feel like if I’d just let go. I barely slept that night.I knew every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was the reality I was trapped in. Leo was under Damian's roof, under his spell. And however hard I kicked, he would always come out on top.I couldn’t let that happen.I needed a plan.My first concern was Leo’s safety, but I couldn’t simply take him and run. Damian would find us. He had resources power, and connections that I could not hope to fight on my own.I had to be careful.I had to be smart. The morning came too soon, and with it, the burden of another day in Damian’s world.I laid out Leo’s clothes and helped him get dressed again, smiling tightly as he went on about starting school. He was so enthusiastic, and I didn’t want to quell that enthusiasm. Toyed with the idea of giving Damian control over this, even if every fiber in me was screaming not to.I brought Leo downstairs for breakfast, bracing myself for another silent standoff with Damian. But the dining room was empty. For a moment, I allo
