Valeriana felt the blood drain from her face. Silas Vane stood in the center of the room, looking like a king who had come to reclaim a stolen prize. His eyes didn't even look at the expensive furniture or the view. They were fixed on Valeriana with a look of pure hatred.

"Get out of my way, Logan," Silas commanded. His voice was like grinding stones.

Logan didn't move. He stood his ground, his feet planted firmly between his grandfather and the hallway where Jamie was sleeping. "You weren't invited, Silas. This is my home, not your boardroom."

Silas let out a dry, mean laugh. "Your home? Everything in this building, including the air you breathe, belongs to me. I heard a rumor that you were hiding a little stray you found in the gutter. I didn't believe you could be that stupid."

"She is the mother of my son," Logan said. He spoke the words clearly, each one hitting the air like a hammer.

The room went silent. Even the guards behind Silas looked at each other with wide eyes. Silas narrowed his gaze, his face turning a deep, angry red.

"You admit it?" Silas stepped closer, his cane clicking against the floor. "You admit you had a child with a common girl? A girl who sweeps floors for a living?"

"I admit that I have an heir," Logan countered. "And if you want him to have the Vane name, you will treat her with respect."

Silas turned his gaze toward Valeriana. She felt like she was being looked at by a hungry wolf. "Respect? She hid him for two years. She tried to steal the future of this family. She belongs in a cell, not a penthouse."

"I hid him to protect him from you!" Valeriana stepped out from behind Logan, her fear turning into a hot, burning fire. "I saw what you did to Logan. I saw how you turned him into a machine. I wasn't going to let you do that to my baby."

Silas sneered at her. "Your baby? That boy has Vane blood. That makes him my property."

"He is a person, not property!" Valeriana snapped.

Logan placed a hand on her shoulder, a silent warning to stay calm. He looked back at Silas. "Here is how this is going to go. Valeriana and Jamie stay here. They are under my protection. If you try to take them, I will walk away from the company tonight. I will take every client and every secret I have with me."

Silas stared at his grandson. For a long time, neither man blinked. The tension in the room was so thick it felt hard to breathe. Finally, Silas leaned on his cane and sighed.

"Fine," Silas said, though his eyes told a different story. "If you want to play the father, play it. But don't think this is over. A boy needs a proper education. He needs a legacy, not a mother who smells like soap and water."

Silas turned around to leave, but he stopped at the door. "Oh, and Logan? Rebecca’s father called. He isn't happy about the broken engagement. If you want to keep your chair at Vane Industries, you'd better find a way to fix the mess you made."

The guards followed Silas out, and the heavy door clicked shut.

Valeriana sank onto the sofa, her legs shaking so much she couldn't stand. "He’s going to take him, Logan. I saw it in his eyes. He’s just waiting for a chance."

Logan sat beside her, his face dark. "He won't get a chance. I’m hiring twenty-four-hour security. No one enters this floor without my thumbprint."

"We can't live like prisoners," she whispered.

"It's only for a little while," Logan promised. He took her hands in his. "I have a plan. But I need you to trust me. Tomorrow, I’m making an announcement. The world will know Jamie is a Vane. Once it’s public, Silas can't make him disappear without a scandal."

Valeriana looked toward the guest room. Jamie was so small and innocent. He had no idea he was now a piece in a deadly game of chess.

"What about Rebecca?" she asked. "She won't just let this go."

"I'll handle Rebecca," Logan said, but his voice lacked his usual confidence.

That night, Valeriana couldn't sleep. She stayed in the bed with Jamie, watching his chest rise and fall. She felt like she was in a golden cage: beautiful, expensive, but still a cage.

Around 3:00 AM, she heard a soft noise in the living room. She slipped out of bed and crept to the door.

Logan was sitting at his desk, the light of his laptop glowing on his face. He was looking at a document. Valeriana walked closer and saw the heading: Voluntary Resignation and Transfer of Shares.

"Logan?" she whispered.

He jumped slightly and closed the laptop. "Go back to sleep, Val. It's late."

"Are you giving up the company for us?"

Logan looked at her, his eyes full of a strange, sad light. "I’ll do whatever I have to do to keep you both safe. Even if it means losing everything I’ve worked for."

He stood up and walked toward her. For a moment, the distance between them felt very small. He reached out to touch her cheek, and Valeriana didn't pull away. But just as his fingers brushed her skin, her phone on the kitchen counter lit up.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Valeriana picked it up. It was a video file. When she pressed play, her heart stopped.

The video showed a grainy view of her old apartment. Two men were inside, tearing it apart. They ripped the stuffed bear Jamie loved. They smashed the small plastic violin. At the end of the video, a hand held up a piece of paper.

It was Jamie’s birth certificate.

A voice behind the camera spoke, distorted and deep. "The boy isn't the only one with a secret, Valeriana. Tell Logan the truth about what happened the night you left, or I will tell the police where the 'missing' scholarship funds really went."

Valeriana dropped the phone. The screen cracked, but the video kept playing in a loop.

"Val? What is it?" Logan asked, reaching for the phone.

She stepped back, her face white. "Don't look at it!"

But it was too late. Logan picked up the phone. As he watched the video, his face went from concern to a cold, terrifying mask of confusion.

"Valeriana," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "What scholarship funds is he talking about?"

Before she could explain, the fire alarm in the building began to scream. A robotic voice boomed over the speakers: "Emergency. Evacuate immediately. This is not a drill."

Valeriana felt her heart drop into her stomach. Rebecca stood by her flashy car, looking like she had just stepped off a movie screen. Her expensive jewelry caught the light of the streetlamp, but her eyes were as sharp as broken glass."Logan," Rebecca said, her voice smooth but dangerous. "You stopped answering my calls. I see you were busy playing house in the slums."Logan didn't flinch. He stepped in front of Valeriana, hiding her and Jamie from Rebecca’s prying eyes. "Go home, Rebecca. This doesn't involve you.""Oh, it involves me plenty," she laughed, stepping closer. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger at the bundle in Valeriana’s arms. "Is that the little secret? He looks just like you, Logan. If Silas sees that face, he’ll have a heart attack. Or maybe he’ll just take the boy and throw this girl in jail for kidnapping an heir."Valeriana’s grip on Jamie tightened. "He’s my son," she said, her voice shaking with rage. "He’s not a secret to be used in your games."Rebecc

The heavy knock on the door sounded like a death sentence. Valeriana pulled Jamie closer, her heart jumping in her chest. Silas Vane’s men were right outside. If they walked in and saw the boy, her life as she knew it was over. Silas didn't just take what he wanted; he crushed anything that stood in his way.Logan moved like a blur. He grabbed his phone and typed something fast. Then, he looked at Valeriana with eyes that were suddenly sharp and focused."Go to the back bedroom," he ordered. His voice was low but held a power that made her feet move before she could even think to argue. "Take the boy. Lock the door and don't make a sound.""Logan, they'll find him," she breathed, her eyes darting to the thin wooden door."I won't let them. Trust me, Val. Just this once."She didn't have time to ask why. She hurried into the small room where she and Jamie slept. She climbed onto the bed, pulling Jamie into her lap and covering his mouth gently with her hand. The boy was warm with fever

Valeriana felt the world stop. The air in her lungs turned to stone as she looked from Logan’s shocked face to the small window above. Jamie was still there, pressing his nose against the glass, his tiny hand palm-flat against the pane. From this distance, the resemblance was like looking into a mirror that traveled back in time."Valeriana," Logan repeated, his voice cracking like dry wood. He took a step toward her, his eyes wide and burning with a look she couldn't name. "Who is that boy?"She grabbed the strap of her bag so hard it cut into her palm. Panic was a fire in her blood, telling her to run, but her legs wouldn't move. She had to protect Jamie. That was the only thing that mattered."He’s my son," she said. Her voice was thin, but she forced it to stay steady. "He’s mine, Logan. Now leave us alone."Logan didn't back away. Instead, he moved faster, closing the gap between them until he was looming over her. He looked up at the window again, his jaw tight. "He has my eyes.
