Cathy was almost through the gates of Elite Academy when laughter and a voice broke out behind her.

“Hey, Pussy Cat!”

She kept walking. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her worn backpack. She knew that voice. It was Alex Vance.

“Hey! I called you!”

Cathy didn't turn around. Her shoes carried her faster toward the gate, but footsteps pounded behind her until Alex caught up and stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop.

“I called you. Why are you snubbing me?”

Cathy lowered her eyes. “My name isn't Pussy Cat. My name is Cathy.”

For a second, he stared at her. Then he burst out laughing, and his friends immediately joined him.

“What?” Cathy asked.

Alex brought out his handkerchief and wiped his face. “Cathy?” More laughter followed. He pointed at her and asked, “What's the difference between Cathy and Cat?” His friends laughed even harder.

Cathy's cheeks burned. She tried to step around him, but Alex moved with her.

“Look at you.” his eyes traveled over her uniform. “Your shirt is wrinkled. Your skirt is dirty. And that backpack…” He grabbed the strap and gave it a mocking tug. “Did you find this thing in a trash can?”

Cathy yanked it back. “Leave me alone.”

Alex laughed. “You're so sensitive.” One of his friends snickered. Alex leaned closer. “You can go home now. Go and meet your good-for-nothing parents.”

Cathy froze.

His smile widened. “Maybe they'll finally buy you a decent uniform.”

The laughter behind him grew louder. Cathy's eyes stung. She refused to let them see her cry, so she pushed past him.

“Cathy!”

She didn't stop. “Run home, Pussy Cat!”

The laughter followed her through the gates. Cathy walked faster. By the time she reached the end of the street, her vision had blurred. A tear slipped down her cheek. She wiped it away, and another followed. She wiped that one too, but the moment she turned onto a quieter road, she couldn't hold it anymore.

Cathy covered her mouth and cried. Not because Alex had mocked her backpack, or even because of her uniform. It was what he had said about her parents. Her parents had never stopped caring about her. Her father was sick, her mother spent every day caring for him, and neither of them had enough money to change their situation. Cathy lowered her hand and took a shaky breath. She couldn't tell her mother what had happened; her mother already carried enough. So Cathy wiped her face, adjusted her backpack, and continued home.

Hours later, she finally pushed open the door of their cramped apartment. Her mother stood in the narrow hallway, a damp washcloth in her hand.

“You're back late, Cathy.”

Cathy glanced toward the faded floral curtain dividing the room. “How is Papa?”

“He had a restless afternoon,” her mother's voice softening. “He ate some broth.”

Cathy nodded. “Let me see him.”

She pushed through the curtain. Her father lay beneath a thin blanket, his face pale against the pillow. He breathed in shallow, uneven wheezes. Cathy sat beside him and took his cold hand. “Papa?” His eyelids fluttered.

Behind her, her mother entered quietly, her eyes moving to the medicine bottles on the bedside table.

“His drugs will finish in three days,” she whispered.

Cathy looked at the bottles. Three days.

Her mother swallowed. “I don't know how we'll afford the refill.”

Cathy looked back at her father. “My cybersecurity contract pays tomorrow. We'll get the medicine.” She squeezed her father's hand. “Don't worry, Mama.”

She didn't tell her mother about Alex. She didn't tell her about the laughter. She didn't tell her about the tears. Instead, she stood and walked toward the battered computer sitting on a crooked wooden crate.

Her mother watched her. “Cathy, you need to rest.”

“I'll work for a little while.”

She pulled out the mismatched chair and sat. Her fingers hovered over the blank keyboard before she pressed the power switch.

Whirrrrr.

The fans roared to life, and emerald light flooded her face. Her eyes hardened. The girl who had just been mocked at the school gates disappeared behind the glow of the screen.

Her fingers began moving. Three security layers vanished beneath her commands. A biometric gate flashed—bypassed. A satellite relay opened—redirected. One proxy became three, and three became seven: Frankfurt, Singapore, and then a darknet server cluster.

The screen filled with moving data. Cathy leaned closer. And then the company's name appeared: GARRISON INDUSTRIES.

Her fingers stopped. She stared at the screen. A billion-dollar corporate network unfolded before her, revealing financial systems, security grids, and executive communications. Her eyes moved across the architecture. There. A weakness.

Cathy leaned back. One command could lock the administrators out. Another could expose confidential files. Her finger settled above Enter.

Then she remembered the medicine bottles beside her father's bed. Three days. Her contract paid tomorrow. If she compromised Garrison Industries, the company's security response could freeze contractor payments for sixty days. Sixty days without her income. Her father's oxygen supply wouldn't last that long.

Cathy slowly lifted her finger. A bitter smile touched her lips. “Not today.”

She closed the corporate directory and opened the firewall patching interface. Her fingers moved again—fast, precise, relentless.

Outside that screen, she was the poor girl Alex Vance had laughed at. Inside it, she was the Tech Genius hiding under the page name Mirage, without her real name.

Three months later. The courtyard of Elite Academy was filled with graduates dressed in black caps and gowns. Others called their names, already preparing to take pictures.Cathy stood among her classmates, adjusting the sleeve of her gown. She looked toward the audience, her eyes moving from one parent to another. Mothers beside their daughters. Fathers beside their sons. Families smiling together. Her parents' seats were empty. Her mother couldn't leave her father's side. His condition had worsened over the past few months, and most of her mother's time was now spent caring for him at home and taking him for medical appointments.Cathy understood. She knew her parents weren't staying away because they didn't care. But understanding didn't make the empty seats hurt any less. She looked down quickly before the tears gathering

The moment Cathy stepped through the gates of Elite Academy, she noticed something was different. Students were gathered in small groups around the courtyard, talking more loudly than usual.Cathy kept walking. She had spent most of the night worrying about her father. The doctor's words kept returning to her: A transplant. Another bill. Another amount of money she didn't have. The last thing she wanted was to become the center of another school discussion. When she entered the main building, the whispers continued around her, but she ignored them, reaching her classroom and heading straight for her seat.A few seconds later, Alex walked in. The room quieted, and several students watched him. Usually, Alex entered the classroom surrounded by his friends, laughing loudly and making enough noise to draw everyone's attention. Not today. He walked straight to his desk. No jokes. No insults. No careless comments. The students exchanged confused looks. One of the boys near the window leaned

“Now that we’ve dealt with that,” Garrison said, “we can discuss why you’re really here.”Cathy tightened her grip on the bottle. She had already spent too much time at the Vance mansion. Her father was waiting at home, and the money for his treatment was still sitting in someone else’s hands.“Sir, I came for my salary. You haven’t transferred it, and I need it urgently.”“I know.” Garrison studied her for a moment. “ But before we discuss your payment, there’s something I want to understand.”Cathy frowned. “What sir?”“Your background.”“My background?”“Sit down.”Cathy lowered herself onto the edge of the sofa. Alex remained nearby, but she kept her attention on Garrison.“I’ve worked with cybersecurity experts for years,” Garrison said. “Some have degrees from the best universities. Others have spent decades in the industry.” He leaned forward. “Yet you managed to stop attacks that could have cost my company billions.”Cathy said nothing.“You did it remotely, without a team, w

The gates of the Vance estate opened with a smooth mechanical hum. Cathy pulled her gray cloth mask higher over her nose and stepped through. Two security guards stood near the gatehouse, watching her approach. Neither stopped her. She kept walking. Her father’s condition was all she could think about. The four-thousand-dollar deposit had to be paid by Monday morning, and Garrison Vance was still holding the money she had earned. She couldn't leave without getting it. Cathy climbed the polished stone steps and entered the estate. Inside the east-wing sitting room, Garrison Vance sat in a high-backed leather chair, a glass of wine resting on the table beside him. He looked up when the doors opened. “Sir,” the head of security announced from the intercom, “Mirage has arrived.” “Let her in.” A butler stepped aside, allowing Cathy into the room. Garrison rose. “Welcome, Mirage. Please, have a seat.” Cathy gave him a brief nod and shook his hand. “Thank you, sir.” She remained st

Cathy didn't flinch at the sound. She and her mother knew the schedule by heart. The nurse was arriving right on time for her father's evening check-up and respiratory care. Her mother walked down the narrow hallway and unlocked the door. The nurse stood outside in navy-blue scrubs, holding her canvas supply bag. She greeted them briefly before stepping inside. But when she reached the bedroom, her expression changed. Without a word, she hurried toward the bed. Cathy and her mother followed. The oxygen concentrator hummed beside her father, but his breathing sounded strained. His chest rose and fell in shallow movements, each breath seeming to take more effort than the last. The nurse set down her bag and checked his oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter. She listened to his breathing, reviewed the readings, and made a call to his doctor. Cathy stood near the doorway, her fingers curled tightly into her palms. After a few minutes, the nurse turned to them. “What is it?” Cath

The second row by the window was empty. Alex stared at that scarred stretch of wood. No scuffed leather bag hooked to the leg. No stiff, quiet posture trying to blend into the shadows. The desk just sat there, bare and silent, casting a cold shadow over the rest of the classroom. When class let out, Alex stood alone in the hallway between periods, staring blankly out the tall glass windows. His father's footsteps approached from behind, measured and deliberate. Garrison Vance didn't look angry. Instead, a slow, calculated smile touched the corners of his mouth. "Don't worry about her skipping out," Garrison said smoothly, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "She's rattled. Give it a few days. The end of the month is hitting right now, and her regular escrow disbursement window is up for its manual executive sign-off. Since she hasn't requested the wire release yet, I have the leverage. She needs the money, I'll make sure she comes straight to the house." Alex watched his father walk
