*Margaret's POV*

The police station was a huge, chaotic nightmare. Sirens wailed in the distance, while an ambulance with its red and blue lights flashing was parked right by the entrance, paramedics rushing inside with stretchers. The air inside the station smelled of cheap coffee, wet clothes, and sweat. Officers shouted over the noise, phones rang nonstop, and handcuffed suspects yelled insults from the holding benches.

"Sir, you can't be back here! This is a restricted area!" a female offic

*Margaret's POV*The morning came in a blur of gray shadows and cold reality. My mind was still stuck on the strange dream from last night—Marcus’s voice echoing through the garden, his eyes burning into mine with that impossible message. "Look for the light in the dark room, where the twin marks meet". It didn't make any sense. It felt like a bad dream caused by grief and fear, but it stayed with me like a heavy blanket as I walked down the quiet hall of the mansion toward Jasmine’s bedroom.I pushed her door open without thinking, my hand moving out of habit."Get out!" a sharp scream cut through the quiet room.I blinked, suddenly coming back to reality. Jasmine was standing near her vanity, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, completely naked as she changed out of her pajamas. Her small face was twisted into an angry look."You're supposed to knock!" she yelled, stamping her bare foot on the rug. "You can't just walk in like you own the place!"I let out a tired sigh, rubb

The air inside the station smelled of cheap coffee, wet clothes, and sweat. Officers shouted over the noise, phones rang nonstop, and handcuffed suspects yelled insults from the holding benches."Sir, you can't be back here! This is a restricted area!" a female officer snapped, stepping into our path as Alexander pushed through the double doors of the interrogation wing, his hand gripping my wrist like an iron grip."Out of my way," Alexander said his voice carrying so much authority that the officer quickly stepped back. He didn't even slow down, forcing his way past her toward the back offices.A senior detective met us outside the reinforced holding cells, his face pale and covered in sweat. He looked like he had just seen a ghost."Vance," the detective

Margaret's POV Every tick of the bedside clock felt like a hit against my chest.I sat in the dark corner of my room, my knees pulled tightly against my chest. My right hand was wrapped around the heavy bronze candlestick holder I had taken from the mantel. It was the only weapon I had against whoever might come through the door.11:58 PM.My breath shook in my throat. I couldn't take my eyes off the door handle. I kept waiting for it to turn, waiting to hear footsteps coming toward my room. The photograph of Leo's bloody face lay on the carpet beside my shoe, the red marks burned into my mind.11:59 PM.I gripped the cold metal so tightly that my palms burned with pain. My heart pounded loudly in my ears.Come on, I thought, tears of fear burning my eyes. Come on then.12:00 AM.Silence.The old grandfather clock downstairs began to tick, its deep sound echoing through the quiet mansion. One tick.Two.Three.I held my breath until my lungs hurt, counting every second that passed af

Margaret's POV The next morning...The Skyline was barely a pale silver line through the morning cloud when my eyes snapped open. The quiet apartment still felt heavy with the tension from the night before. I got up from the guest bed and quietly went into the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth with a spare toothbrush from Leo’s cabinet. When I crossed the hallway to check on him before leaving, I stopped at his cracked door. Leo was fast asleep, buried under a pile of blankets and snoring loudly enough to shake the cheap lamplight beside his bed. Despite the purple swelling on his jaw, he looked almost peaceful. I smiled faintly, deciding not to wake him.I pulled my coat tighter around my shoulders and quietly left the apartment. The drive back to the estate felt painfully long. Every headlight behind the taxi made my heart race. I kept looking at the rearview mirror, half-expecting the two men in dark hoodies to be following us all the way to the estate. When the cab fina

Margaret's POV The taxi ride to Leo’s apartment was a blur of streetlights and panic. My hands were shaking so badly that I could barely type as I kept checking my phone, hoping he would answer. When I finally jumped out of the cab and ran up the stairs to his floor, my heart nearly stopped. The door to his apartment was broken, the wooden frame cracked down the middle. Inside, everything was a mess. Bookshelves had been knocked over, cushions were ripped open, and broken dishes covered the kitchen floor.“Leo?!” I gasped as I rushed inside. He was sitting on the floor in the middle of the mess, leaning against the overturned coffee table. His face was badly bruised—a cut above his eyebrow, a split lip, and a huge purple bruise already forming along his jaw.“Leo! Oh my God!” I dropped beside him, my hands hovering over his face because I was scared of hurting him. “What happened?!”Leo winced and spat a little blood onto the floor. “They... two guys in black hoodies,” he said, his v

Margaret's POV "So pathetic," the woman said, walking further into the room as the door clicked shut behind her. Her high heels tapped against the floor, sharp and steady. "Don't you have any other things doing than digging through my dead sister's private safe?"I quickly shoved the yellowed letter into the back pocket of my jeans, using my body to cover the open panel in the bookcase. I straightened my back, keeping my chin up even though my heart was beating fast."Who are you?" I asked, keeping my voice calm. "And what gives you the right to barge into a private wing?"The woman gave a cold laugh, her red lips twisting into a smirk. "Who am I? I'm Trisha. Victoria was my sister. Which means this family, this house, and everything in it is my business. You, on the other hand, are just hired help." She stepped closer, her eyes full of anger. "You think you can hide behind that pretty face? I know your type. You're a thief. Or worse, you're trying to find dirt to blackmail Alexande
