The hallway was dim when I stepped out of Sofia’s room.

Quiet in a way that made every thought louder.

I closed the door behind me and turned, already halfway to my room when a voice stopped me.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

I looked up and Damien stood a few steps away, leaning casually against the wall, like he had all the time in the world.

I stopped a short distance from him. “Something like that.”

His lips curved faintly. “First day and you already look like you’re reconsidering your life choices.”

There was a subtle shift in the room, exchanged glances passing between representatives and executives. The screen behind me stayed the same, exactly what Iris wanted them to see.I let the silence stretch for a few seconds, then exhaled softly and stepped forward like nothing was wrong.“Apologies,” I said calmly, my voice steady enough to cut through the room.“Wrong file.”A few brows lifted.Across the room, I saw Iris’ smile falter, just slightly.I reached into my bag, pulled out another flash drive—a backup copy.I removed the first drive, replaced it with mine, and turned back to the screen. The screen went black for a second, then changed to a clean layout, structured data, and clear projections. Everything exactly the way I built it.This time, the shift in the room wasn’t subtle. It was immediate.Attention snapped back, people leaned forward, interest replaced doubt.I didn’t look at Iris. Not yet.“Let’s begin,” I said.I spoke without notes, not because I didn’t need the

I turned and walked back to my desk without looking at anyone. Still, I could feel the subtle shift in the room. The quiet attention. I sat down, pulled my laptop closer, and stared at the blank screen. I had to write a proposal for a major contract, from start to finish.I exhaled slowly and opened the company database. At first, it looked simple—past contracts, archived proposals, internal reports.Everything was there, just in a way I don't understand. The documents were technical, layered and built on knowledge I didn't have. Terms I had never worked with. Numbers that connected to systems I didn’t fully understand.Still, I kept going, file after file.Trying to piece something together–but nothing connected the way it should. After a while, I stopped and looked up.Across the office, a junior staff sat flipping through documents.I stood and walked over. “You’ve worked with past proposals, right?”He looked up, slightly surprised. “Yes, a few.”“I need access to the full archi

He straightened, folding his arms.“Most people don’t survive their first day here without looking… defeated.”“And I don’t look defeated?”“No.” His eyes lingered a second longer than necessary. “You loo

I moved instantly, sliding off his lap. One second I was on him, the next I was on my feet, my hand slipping from his chest as I straightened, forcing my expression to stay neutral. For a moment, no one spoke. Iris stood by the door, a file held neatly against her chest. And unlike most people, she didn’t react. No shock, no embarrassment. “I didn’t realize you were occupied,” she said evenly. Leonardo leaned back slightly in his chair, completely at ease. Iris stepped forward as if nothing had happened. “These need your signature,” she said, placing the file on his desk. “They’re due before noon.” He took it without a word, flipping through the pages with quiet precision. He signed each one without rushing, then closed the file and handed it back. “Anything else?” “No,” she took it, her eyes sliding briefly to me. “I’ll get started with her orientation,” she added. Leonardo gave a short nod, already reaching for another document. “Take her,” he said. Iris turned. “C

The name left her lips like she hadn’t said it in a long time.Leonardo didn’t react immediately. He just stood there, expression unreadable, gaze fixed on her like she was something distant. Her hand reached for his arm, but he stepped back before she could touch him.“Don’t,” not loud, but it was enough to make her stop. Her hand froze mid-air, surprise flickered across her face, but she masked it just as quickly.Leonardo didn’t spare her another glance, his attention shifted to me instead.“Have you picked what you need?” he asked.I held his gaze for a second before nodding. “Yes.”“Pack it,” he said to the assistant. The girl behind the counter moved immediately.“And send a selection to the house,” he added. “She’ll choose the rest there.” The assistant nodded quickly, “ yes sir.”The woman’s smile faltered, her eyes moved between us. “You know her?” she asked, unable to hide the disbelief.Leonardo didn’t respond, he turned and walked out. I picked up the dress and followed

The door had barely closed before the silence started bothering me.I stayed on the bed for a moment, staring at nothing. then swung my legs off the bed, pain tugged sharply at my side, but I ignored it.I stepped into the hallway, and it was quieter than it should be.Their voices were already fading, low and distant, I followed slowly, just close enough to hear what they were saying.Their voices were already fading low and distant.I followed, careful and quiet just close enough to catch fragments of what they were saying. They stopped near the end of the corridor, and stepped into a room. The door didn't shut completely.I moved closer, stopping just before the narrow opening.Where is he?” Leonardo asked.“At the Warehouse,” Adrian replied, "sector three.” “Has he said anything?” “No.” There was a brief pause.“Then we’re done with him.” Adrian didn’t respond immediately“Take care of him,” Leonardo added.I felt my chest tighten. My foot shifted slightly against the floor,
