"Ms. Taylor, this is what you requested," Ruth, an employee, gave her a pile of folders. She took them from her and went inside the office.
She did not expect a woman to be there because Johannes had stopped bringing one for over a week. The woman smiled at Nathalie, "You're Johannes's secretary?"
Nathalie smiled back. She put the folders on the table and greeted her. "Yes, I'm Nathalie Taylor. You are?" she handed her right and raised her brows. The woman reached for it and did a handshake. "Samantha Wheeler,"
Nathalie then remembered seeing her from somewhere, "Oh, you were the one who visited the boss last time. What brought you here, Ms. Wheeler?" She asked though she was sure it would be because the man would have her entertain him for the rest of the day.
Samantha stared at her, reading her expressions, and it seemed like she had improved in doing so. Samantha smirked, "You think I'm one of his women, don't you?" Nathalie was surprised. She slightly froze and pulled her hand back.
Getting shy now, was she wrong? It won't make sense for a woman to roam Johannes's office freely. Nathalie redeemed herself and chuckled, "It would be presumptuous of me to think that lowly of you, Ms. Wheeler,"
Samantha smirked. She liked how Nathalie viewed those women who fling with Johannes lowly. She had been cringing over it since the man started acting that way after what had happened five years ago.
"I like you,"
"Pardon?" Nathalie asked, confused as to where the liking thing came from. She smiled shyly at Samantha, but the woman only smirked widely as she glanced over her shoulder.
"Johannes, I should have your secretary be mine," Nathalie turned around and saw the man with his neat suit. His hair was brushed up, and his eyes were cold as he stared at them.
"In your fucking dreams, Sam,"
"You know I'm still older than you. Show some respect to your cousin!" Samantha argued. Nathalie looked back and forth at the two people arguing in front of her. She stared at their features and finally realized their resemblance.
She would have been totally embarrassed had she humiliated the woman who's also part of the Alejandro Empire! Nathalie pushed away the thought and greeted Johannes.
"Good morning, boss," Johannes stared at her and nodded.
"Agenda?" Nathalie was stunned that he stopped greeting her back. A month had passed, and they started acting rather casually with each other, but he was drawing a line between them again. Well, she was not too surprised. After all, she never understood how her boss's head worked.
She took the tablet from her desk and scanned through it. She then relayed her boss's schedule for the rest of the day as they walked to the conference room. Johannes had ignored his cousin entirely, and Samantha did not mind it too much either.
After the meeting, he walked out, and Nathalie followed him. They went to the next agenda, skipping luncheon because it would be an hour away from the building. Nathalie was adept with this setup for five years. It was just recently that Johannes had given her time to eat.
They went on and on for the rest of the day until sunset. Johannes finally turned to Nathalie and observed her. Oddly, the woman looked like nothing was bothering her. She seemed relatively relaxed, not someone who had not eaten the whole day.
Johannes was trying to test Nathalie whether she would ask him to eat, but she had yet to speak a word if it was not for business.
"That is all for today, boss," Nathalie checked the final list and turned off the tablet. She noticed how Johannes stared at her.
"Is there something wrong, boss?" She asked, but the man simply looked away.
He took his card from his wallet and handed it to her. Nathalie simply stared at it, unsure as to why he was giving it to her.
"Eat something and go home. You are dismissed for the day," he simply said and took her hand, putting the card in it.
"Boss,"
"What?" Johannes slightly knitted his brows, ready to scold her had she asked him to take his card back because she had her own money. But he was surprised.
"Will this be lessened from my salary?" he was amused when Nathalie asked about her pay. She had never mentioned something like this before.
"No,"
"Great! Have a safe trip on your way home, boss!" she joyfully said and went on her way. Johannes stared at her vanishing back, wondering whether it was the same woman whom he had been avoiding the whole week.
It's not like he was affected by her. It's just that he does not like how he reacts whenever Nathalie is around.
"I'm getting crazy," he mumbled as he got in his car.
Nathalie went to the mall and had a light meal before going to the department store. She was scanning through the male department, "Are you looking for a gift, Ma'am? For your boyfriend, perhaps?" the saleslady smiled playfully.
Nathalie chuckled, "No. I am looking for a set for my brother," she continued scanning through the clothes. It was the first time in a while that she had the time to buy things for her brother. And a lucky day it is, she would be using the company money for free.
There's no way that Johannes would even notice a few dollar difference from her usual meal. After all, she only had McD*nald's so she would have the remaining balance for shopping.
Nathalie went to the hospital afterward. She went straight to her brother's room but what welcomed her still is his sleeping figure. He's still unconscious. It had been over a month since the last attack but he had not woken up ever since.
She faintly smiled as she rubbed her hand against his cheek. "You're getting thinner, Nathan," her voice cracked as tears fell from her eyes. If only she was the one who's sick and not her brother, would things get better? Nathalie always wondered. She always blames herself for what happened to Nathan though it was fate that gave him that illness.
She stayed there for a little while before heading home. Nathalie quickly washed up before going to her working station. She still got a lot to finish. After what happened a month ago, she realized that her current salary would not suffice an emergency treatment had it been needed.
Nathalie looked for hustle jobs from here and there and grabbed every opportunity she had. There's nothing she won't do for her brother. Nothing that will stop her from trying to save him.
Nathalie was fortunate enough to be born with a healthy body. She had always felt guilty whenever she played with other kids when they were young while her brother simply watched from the side.
He was born weak. His heart failed him from time to time, and he needed to have an operation that significantly impacted their way of living. They had a business, but it went bankrupt after his father got addicted to gambling.
Their lives went downside the moment her father left home while a bunch of loan sharks roamed their home...
Nathalie could still vividly remember that day. The sounds of breaking things in their house. The beggings of her mother, asking those men to stop. Her brother crying behind her. Nathalie could still remember, and to this day, she's still cursing her father for doing that to them. Her mother left them to her grandparents the next day, and she had only heard the news of her passing the next year because of an accident. Nathalie could not even mourn for her poor mother as she was busy attending to her brother, who was hospitalized that week. Nathalie tried looking for her father to ask him for help since she could not do anything as a mere minor. Her grandparents were too old to work. They are in the hide because loan sharks might show up anytime, and Nathalie doesn't want the burden that her parents left them to be passed on to her poor grandparents. They were good to the siblings. Though they could not provide them luxury like what the other grandparents in that town are doing to th
Johannes loosened his tie as he knelt down to level with Nathalie, who was still sleeping soundly. He took his phone and contacted Clinton to make a delivery of a hot porridge from his favorite restaurant in New York. They don't create porridge, but if they'd hear the request is from Johannes, they would indeed comply. He's friends with the owner of the restaurant and has been visiting there since day one. Johannes searched the internet for the things that he should do for a sick person. He had no idea what he should do. It was the first time he's put his hands on a person with a fever, and he did not want to mess up for some reason. "Why's there so many? Are these even true?" He complained when he was welcomed with at least a hundred recommendations. He was not often on the internet because he always had someone to search for things for him. Johannes rarely even uses his phone for such stuff. He does not even open his social media a lot! It would have been a miracle if he'd been on
A week passed and things got back to normal. Johannes does not even act the way he acted before which gave Nathalie more confusion. Especially when a woman comes into the office. "Boss? He's out for a meeting, ma'am. How may I help you?" Nathalie asked. The woman looks like she's in her mid-twenties. She's wearing a light blue, casual dress down to the top of her knee paired with a flat doll shoe that makes her look even younger. She looks lovely. "He called me. Can I wait inside?" Even her voice sounds angelic. She tucked her hair behind her ear as she looked at Nathalie. The employees in the company aren't even surprised that another woman is lurking around the office. It had stopped for a couple of days, but of course, Johannes being the Johannes, women would line up again. They are even betting sometimes how many he'd flirt with this month, especially since the end of the year is nearing. Johannes kept this profile around the company. He did not have this image since the sta
Johannes's POV I woke up with a headache. I drank a lot last night. I saw soup on the table, and it was still hot. There was a note beside it, and I know too well to whom it belongs. I don't know if I should smile or feel agitated that she's acting the same even after what I said last night. I also did not know why I said that out of the blue. There was an urge in my chest, behind my head, telling me to ask her out. *** Last night... "Date me," I saw her freeze a little when I said that. She stepped back and smiled awkwardly at me. "Your next appointment will be in ten minutes, boss," she scans the tablet she's holding as she avoids my gaze. "You're avoiding me, Nathalie," "We're here for work, boss," "Exactly. I'm the boss. I decide. I'm the rule, Nathalie Taylor," her eyes stared directly at me. Her ocean blue eyes look like a surging ocean, unsure of what she needs to do next. I smirked. "I can wait for your answer, silly. You don't have to look so troubled," I said bef
"Why would you do that?" Nathalie asked, wiping her forehead because of the heat. "He's hitting on you," "And?" Johannes stopped walking, faced her, and wrinkled his nose. "And?" He asks sarcastically. "Are you asking me why because you didn't know, or you're pretending not to know? Are you teasing me, Nathalie? I'm telling you that this is not funny," the side of his lips lifted as he looked at Nathalie with disbelief. Johannes sighed. Nathalie looked lost with the words he had just mentioned. He could not believe he had to explain that he liked her. "I asked you to date me. That means I like you. I am waiting for your response, yes. But," he stared at her ocean blue eyes, waving like a tsunami's coming. "But I won't allow you to flirt with someone." "You don't get to decide on that, boss," Johannes arched a brow. This woman is testing his patience. He took off his sweater and wrapped it around Nathalie's waist. That was a designer's sweater that costs thousands of dollars,
Johannes glanced at the woman across the dining table. The sun slightly compliments her blonde, wavy hair as the wind plays with it. He smiled. He cannot believe she'd agree to dine with him after such a short notice. Well, it's a given because she is his secretary, after all. Still, Johannes knew this one could be an awkward situation for the woman after what happened last night. "How's the food?" Startled, Nathalie flinched a little before moving her eyes away from the dish to the man sitting across her. She gulped. Johannes stood out even more now that common folks surrounded them. They are currently eating outside, the heat is unbelievable, but the slight brush of the wind puts off the effects of it. Johannes waited for her answer, slightly curving his thin, reddish lips. Nathalie did not notice she was staring at it until Johannes lifted a side of it. "Do you want to kiss it?" He teased. Nathalie instantly looked away, putting down the utensils. "I-It's delicious," "Hmm?"
"Aren't you sleepy?" Johannes asked, wrapping a scarf around Nathalie's neck. It's not that cold, but the wind is quite chilly. "I, I just hoped I'd spend my Christmas in New York," she said, not looking at Johannes. The man stared at her side profile as he read her expression. It was not sad but longing. He felt a little guilty about keeping her with him when he could have agreed to fly back to New York yesterday. He planned to ask her to formally be his girlfriend tonight but was hesitant after hearing her thoughts. "Why?" He asked. Nathalie turned to him, and she smiled, and it was neither happy nor sad. "I just want to spend this day with someone really important to me, boss," Johannes furrowed his brows. "Important? Is it a guy?" He arched a brow. Nathalie felt a tingling sensation inside her chest. She chuckled and then nodded. "Yes, it is a guy, boss," she said, remembering her brother's face, "And he's handsome," she added. Johannes couldn't believe the woman was teasin
A week had passed since Christmas, and Nathalie was back to her work for Johannes. She woke up early to prepare all the paperwork she needed to address at the meeting later. Nathalie glanced at her watch; it was about time her brother called her to say hi. She took her tablet and waited for him. She always does the waiting so her brother can take his time. "Hey, Nathan!" [Sis,] his smile was so genuine that Nathan's handsome face was apparent even though he looked thin. His ash blonde, wavy hair compliments the whiteness of his skin. His nose is tall like his sister's. His eyes are blue, just like Nathalie's. The only thing that distinguishes the two is the color of their hair. Everything else was a carbon copy. "I miss you, Nathan," she leaned towards the screen as if she could touch him if she touched her tablet. [It's your fault for not spending the Christmas with me,] he scolded her. He even rolled his eyes. How cute. Nathan is a sixteen-year-old who spent almost his time ins
