"Miss Aria Vance?" the man's voice barked through my speaker before I could even say hello. "My name is Marcus from the human resources division at Blackwood Group."

I almost dropped the phone right onto the kitchen table. My heart slammed hard against my ribs. "Yes, this is Aria," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady while my hand trembled.

"I am calling about your application for the Executive Personal Assistant position to our Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Julian Blackwood," he said. His voice was smooth, sharp, and strictly professional. "You have been shortlisted for a final interview."

My mind completely froze. Blackwood Group was the biggest corporate empire in the entire city, led by a ruthless billionaire who destroyed his rivals without a second thought. I had applied weeks ago out of total desperation, even though I knew my poor background, lack of connections, and cheap clothes meant I stood zero chance against elite applicants. After four painful months of constant rejections, growing debt, and absolute silence, I had already thrown away every single piece of hope. I was certain my résumé was resting at the bottom of a trash bin.

"Miss Vance?" Marcus asked, his tone cutting through my disbelief. "Are you still on the line?"

"Yes! Yes, I am sorry," I stammered, gripping the edge of the table until my fingers turned white. "I am here."

"Good," he said. "We were impressed by your profile. Your interview is set for tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp at Blackwood Tower. Bring extra copies of your documents and present yourself at the front desk. Do not be late."

"Eight o'clock tomorrow morning at Blackwood Tower," I repeated, my chest tightening as my breath caught. "I will definitely be there. Thank you so much for this."

"We shall see you then, Miss Vance." The line went dead with a cold, sudden click.

I lowered the phone, staring at the dark glass as heavy silence rushed back into my small kitchen. My hands kept shaking, and my heart pounded wildly against my ribs. I sat in total stillness, struggling to process what had just happened. Was this really happening? Could this massive, terrifying company finally be the open door I had been praying for every night, or was I stepping into a dangerous trap that would destroy whatever piece of my life I had left?

Before I could even take another deep breath, the screen flashed red with a new text: "Change of plans, Miss Vance."

My fingers trembled as I stared at the message, my mind immediately pulling me back into the dark pit of the last four months. Job hunting had been a long, painful nightmare. I had sent out hundreds of applications, attended endless interviews, and faced nothing but cold rejections. Every door had been slammed in my face. Hiring managers had looked down on my plain resume and lack of corporate experience, leaving me feeling smaller and more useless with every passing day. I was so exhausted from trying and failing that my confidence was almost completely gone.

Yet, I knew giving up was simply not an option for me. I looked across the small room at the stack of unpaid bills piled high on the counter. Rent was overdue, the utility warnings were piling up, and my mother’s medical expenses were growing heavier by the week. My younger brother needed money for his school fees, and our pantry was almost completely empty. The entire weight of my family’s survival rested firmly on my shoulders, and the constant financial stress felt like a heavy stone crushing my chest. If I did not land a real job soon, we would lose everything we had left.

That was when the cold creep of fear started crawling through my mind. Blackwood Group was not just any ordinary company; it was a world of absolute power, wealth, and ruthless ambition. Julian Blackwood was a feared billionaire who expected absolute perfection from everyone around him. Who was I to think I could actually stand in a place like that? I was just a girl from a poor neighborhood with cheap shoes and no powerful connections. What if I walked into that building tomorrow only to humiliate myself in front of everyone? What if I was completely out of my depth?

I closed my eyes and took a long, deep breath, forcing the sudden panic to stop. Worrying would not pay our mounting debts, and fear would never buy food for my hungry family. I could not allow my own heavy doubt to destroy the one golden opportunity I had been praying for during those hopeless nights. I opened my eyes and looked directly at my tired reflection in the dark phone screen. Even if I failed tomorrow, even if they harshly rejected me like all the other companies, I was not going to run away. I was going to walk into that massive interview knowing I gave it every single drop of energy I had inside me.

I stood up from the creaking table and went straight to my small bedroom to prepare. I carefully pulled my only good suit, a plain black jacket and matching trousers from the closet. I spent twenty minutes ironing out every visible wrinkle, making sure the fabric looked clean and presentable. Next, I gathered my printed résumés, reference letters, and identification cards, sliding them neatly into a clear folder. Everything had to be perfect for tomorrow.

Once my clothes were hung near the door, I turned off the overhead light and slipped under the thin blanket. The room sank into darkness, but my mind stayed wide awake. The silence of the apartment made the silence in my head even louder. I pressed my palms together over my chest, closing my eyes tightly. In the quiet darkness, I whispered a silent prayer, begging for just one real chance to lift my family out of this endless financial ruin.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand, set three separate alarms for six in the morning, and set it down. My stomach churned with deep anxiety, and my heart beat rapidly against my ribs. Sleep felt completely impossible. Yet, as I lay there staring at the ceiling, something shifted inside me. The dark fear that had trapped me for months slowly melted away, replaced by a fierce, solid determination. I was done being terrified of failure. I promise myself right now that I will not run from this opportunity. I will face Mr. Blackwood tomorrow, no matter how intimidating he is.

With that quiet vow locked inside my chest, my breathing slowed, and my eyelids finally grew heavy. Just as my mind drifted toward sleep, my phone suddenly vibrated on the nightstand with a sharp, loud hum.

The screen flashed brightly in the dark room, illuminating the wall. My heart skipped a violent beat. I reached out with a trembling hand, snatched the phone, and brought it to my face.

It was a new message from Blackwood Group.

My breath caught in my throat as I tapped the screen open and read the cold text message: Interview canceled. Mr. Blackwood demands your immediate presence at his private residence tonight.

Ethan had spent years believing he knew everything about his family, but one phone call made him question the foundation of everything he had ever believed. The heavy silence inside the car pressed against my ribs as we drove through the dark, rain-slicked streets toward the Blackwood family estate. Ethan kept his hands locked tightly around the steering wheel, his knuckles stark white against the leather, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He hadn't spoken a single word since stepping out of the penthouse, but the moment he reached for his keys, I had quietly picked up on the terrifying urgency in his movements and followed him down to the garage. He didn't want to face whatever dark ghost his father had unlocked alone, and I wouldn't let him walk into that fire by himself. When we arrived, his father was waiting in the dimly lit study, looking older and far more exhausted than I had ever seen him. Without preamble, he dropped the bombshell that shattered the

I thought the hardest part of loving Ethan was surviving his enemies; I was wrong, the hardest part might be convincing the people who believed they knew who he should marry.Vanessa’s parting warning still echoed in my ears, but the real storm broke not long after when the corporate gossip mill shifted toward something far more personal. I stood near the office pantry, holding a cup of lukewarm coffee, when I overheard two senior analysts whispering near the window. They weren't talking about spreadsheets or market projections; they were discussing the intense pressure Ethan’s family had been facing from powerful, affluent dynasties eager to secure a high-society alliance. At first, I brushed it off as idle office chatter, the kind of baseless speculation that always surrounded a billionaire CEO. But the illusion shattered completely when I learned the truth behind the whispers. A wealthy, internationally educated heiress named Camille Laurent had shared a deeply entrenched history

"The invitation to the boardroom should have made me proud, but the moment I saw my name on it, I wondered whether they wanted me there or wanted to test me."I stood by my desk, turning the heavy cardstock over in my fingers as Ethan walked into my office. He stopped a few paces away, his sharp gaze instantly picking up on the rigid tension in my shoulders."I saw the notice," Ethan said, his voice level and steady. "The board wants to discuss the new corporate development project."I looked up, narrowing my eyes slightly as a wave of skepticism washed over me. "And why is my name attached to it, Ethan? Is this because of my work, or is this because everyone in this building knows who I am to you?"Ethan’s expression didn't flicker, nor did he offer an easy reassurance. "It has nothing to do with our relationship, Aria. The board specifically requested you because of your role in uncovering the recent financial manipulation within the logistics division. They saw the audit report y

"You don't have to answer tonight, Aria," Ethan murmured, his dark eyes reading every flicker of hesitation on my face as his thumb brushed my cheek."It's just..." I swallowed hard, my fingers twisting tightly into the fabric of my skirt. "Marriage is enormous, Ethan. Our lives are entirely different. You walk in a world of power and influence that I spent my whole life standing outside of. When you talk about forever, it feels like stepping off an edge without knowing if there is solid ground."He dropped his hand from my face back to the steering wheel, turning slightly toward me so he had my full attention. "I'm not asking for an immediate answer. I just need you to know where my head is. I see a future with you. Not an assistant, not a temporary distraction, but you."Hearing him say those words sent a sharp shiver down my spine, filling my chest with a fierce, blinding happiness right alongside a cold wave of absolute terror. I met his steady gaze through the dim cabin light.

"You cannot seriously expect me to walk into a room with your grandmother and pretend I belong there," I said, my voice rising over the steady, nerve-wracking hum of the car engine as Ethan kept his eyes fixed strictly on the road ahead. He didn't even flinch, only tightening his grip on the wheel with one hand while reaching across the console with the other to wrap his fingers firmly around my trembling hand. "You aren't pretending anything, Aria," he replied, his tone entirely too calm, too collected for someone who had just detonated a bomb in the middle of our afternoon. "She asked to meet you.""Your grandmother is Evelyn Blackwood," I shot back, wrenching my gaze away from the passing blur of the city to glare at him, my heart hammering a frantic, violent rhythm against my ribs. "The Blackwood name carries weight in rooms we have no business stepping into. Why on earth would she want to look at me? What if she sees right through me?""She already does," Ethan interrupted smooth

"The votes have been verified and certified," the chairman announced, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet hall.My heart hammered hard against my ribs, a wild, breathless rhythm as I stared straight ahead at the podium. Beside me, Ethan did not flinch, his shoulders remaining square and his expression locked in a calm, impenetrable mask of absolute focus. Across the aisle, Victor’s lead attorney smirked openly, leaning in to whisper something smug to his associate as if the victory belonged to them. The silence in the auditorium stretched out, heavy and suffocating, waiting for the single sentence that would dictate our entire future. My thoughts raced back to the cold, distant billionaire who had first demanded a contract for my life months ago, a man who saw warmth as a weakness and emotion as a liability. Looking at the profile of his face now, etched with strength and hard-won resilience, I felt a deep, fierce shift inside my chest. I wasn't afraid of what the outcome m
