Chapter 5
Emelia's Pov
“You want to stay with me?” Kaidon murmured, “What would your brother's say if they find out that you, an unmarried woman, is staying with an unmarried man? Don't you think they would get angry?” There was some sort of teasing in his voice.
I huffed, “Weren't you the one who said I was yours from now on? Why are you trying to let go of me now? Brother Kai, it's really cold out here, I think I'm going to catch a cold.” I sniffled for extra effect.
A long, painful sigh came from the other end, “Get up, don't sit on the ground.”
My eyes brightened instantly and I turned my head, “Brother Kai, are you nearby? How do you know I'm sitting on the ground?” I stood up, looking around now. A few seconds later, a car stopped in front of me, it was a black Mustang.
Kai stepped out of the passenger's seat along with the driver who silently began packing my stuff into the car trunk. When he was done, as quietly as he came out, he went back into the car.
“Come here.”
I walked obediently to him, swinging my arms like a kid. He was a lot taller than me so I had to crane up my neck in order to meet his gaze.
“Yes, brother Kai?”
“You call me brother but you are such a troublemaker. You're just like a child.” Kaidon sighed and pushed back a strand of my hair that was in my face behind my ears. Then he removed his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders.
“Go in, it'll rain soon.” I nodded and without further ado, got into the backseat, I glanced at the driver who was in front and smiled in greeting. Not long after, Kaidon was sitting at the back beside me, his long legs resting firmly on the ground.
“Brother Kai, are your legs really strong?” I suddenly asked.
“Why? You don't think they are? Do you want to test them out?” His voice was filled with a lot of ambiguity, so much that I was actually speechless. Who taught this man how to speak like this? If any woman heard him, they would fall over their feet.
Kaidon was very handsome, he was actually the most handsome man I had seen in my entire life. And he wasn't that much older than I was, only a five year age gap. If I could rope him in, things would go really well for me, wouldn't it?
“What are you scheming now?”
I gave him my sweetest, most innocent smile, tilting my head slightly, "Scheming? Me? Never.”
The corner of his lips rose up in amusement, “Then why are you staring at me like that? Your gaze could poke a hole into my head. Or do you like me?” He questioned, leaning in closer.
I blinked, speechless for the second time today. I was about to respond when he chuckled and moved back.
“Unfortunately, you are a little bit younger for me.”
“Brother Kai, are you that old? It's just a five year gap, isn't it? Brother Kai, what if I finished high school, would I still be too young for you?” I asked, my eyes glittering.
“What are you thinking in this little head of yours, Emelia. No dating for you until you finish high school.”
I pouted, slumping into the seat with a dramatic sigh, “You're so strict. How am I supposed to find love if you keep putting restrictions on me?”
“You can fall in love after you grow a bit more brain.” He said dryly, “Right now, all you do is cause trouble.”
“That’s not true!” I protested immediately, “I helped someone today!”
“Oh? Who?” Kaidon arched a brow, his expression skeptical.
“I… helped myself.” I grinned, proud of my answer, “I helped myself by leaving that cursed house and coming here instead. That’s called self-care, Brother Kai.”
Well, it wasn't like that family was going to give up on making me angry. After all, grandfather's birthday is coming up soon and I have to attend it. My father and older brother will soon come home as well. Despite the fact that the family despised me, it was only my grandfather who treated me well. He even liked me more than Nora and often scolded my brother's if they yelled at me because of Nora. My grandmother had offered for me to go and live with them in the past instead of my parents and eventually, I stayed away from my grandparents because of Nora's disgusting words more and more.
I chuckled. I was such a foolish girl. I shouldn't think about that now.
“Brother Kai, I'm feeling so sleepy.” I turned to him and his eyes narrowed but I continued, “You said your legs were strong. I want to rest on them, they could cure my insomnia.”
Kaidon turned his head to look at me, his sharp gaze piercing through the dim light inside the car. For a moment, he didn’t say anything.
"Insomnia, huh?" His voice was low, almost a murmur, but there was a teasing edge to it, "Troublemakers don't deserve to sleep."
I pouted, leaning in closer until there was barely any space between us, "But you’re my Brother Kai." I said sweetly, letting my fingers lightly tug at the sleeve of his jacket, "Aren’t you supposed to take care of me?”
His lips twitched again, he was fighting a smile, I could tell, but instead, he lifted one arm lazily and patted his thigh, "Since you’re so pitiful.” He drawled, "Come on then. But no funny business."
I grinned and scuttled closer to him, putting my legs on his thigh. He merely crossed his arms and leaned back, closing his eyes as well. The grin didn't leave my face as I stared at him, thinking about what tomorrow was going to bring. I had to go to school so it was inevitable that I would come in contact with Nora but no worries, they would easily be taken care of.
I promise them so.
Chapter 6 Emelia's Pov Nile Academy. The name of the school I was going to attend from now on was written boldly at the front. Amelia had transferred me over to this school right before I was sent to the mental hospital but I hadn't had the chance to resume yet. In my past life, I also resumed later and towards that time, I was transferred to Class 8, it was for the worst students in school; the misfits, illegitimate children, delinquents, etc. My grandfather had asked my father to donate a few buildings just so I could attend the school when I mentioned it to them. I released a soft groan and mentally preparing myself, I walked into the school, however, it seems like I was cursed to have a bad day because the moment I walked in, I saw Nora, Liam, Jeremy and Amelia standing in the middle of the school compound, their clothes glittering like they came for a model casting. I turned my head around, intending on ignoring them when someone yelled out my name. “Emelia!” Nora called o
Chapter 7 Emelia's Pov I walked all the way to where Class 8 was, ignoring the looks that were sent my way. A lot of people had seen the commotion that Liam caused so they knew who I was and there was bound to be small talk. “I heard that she was related to the school beauty, Nora.” “She can't be more than a relative. Nora came to school with bandages around her body, who do you think caused them?” “I heard that the RedFields donated a lot of buildings and money to the school in order for her to attend it.” “She looks so cold.” Cold? I was anything but cold though. Before I knew it, I stood in front of Class Seven doors, and from outside, I could already hear the screams and yells coming from the inside. Taking a deep breath, I opened the doors and walked in. There was already a teacher inside the class who didn't care that his students were making noises while he was teaching, but my entrance drew his attention“Hello teacher.” I greeted, my smile wide, “My name is Emelia, I
Chapter 8 Emelia's Pov “Excuse me, Miss Emelia, the Dean is asking for you.” A student from class one came into the class after Mr Mike had finished teaching, he had started packing up his books already. I glanced at the door, staring at the girl who came. Under my gaze, she was a bit jumpy, like she was scared of something. “Why?” I asked, licking my lips. “I… I don't know. He just asked me to send for you, if you go late, he's going to be very angry.” She said without taking a breath, by this time, sweat was dripping off her eyebrows. I smiled, getting up from my seat and walking towards her. She was quite shorter than I was, very petite and cute. Leaning down, I patted her shoulders, “I'm not going to eat you so you don't have to be scared of me.” The girl hiccuped. It seems someone had sent her to call me just like I thought. “You can show me to the Dean's office, I don't know where it is.” “O… Okay.” The girl stiffly replied. We walked along the hallway, she was at the
Chapter 9 Emelia's Pov The sounds of ambulances echoed throughout the school and I stood, cross-armed in the Dean's office, watching as the girls were put into the ambulance on stretchers. Their injuries were not serious but most of them fainted. I don't even know what the fuss is about. Jasmine was beside me, her head lowered. “Emelia RedField.” The Dean started, bringing me out of my thoughts, “Do you know what you did wrong?” He asked, staring at me calmly. I turned to face him, my lips pulling into a polite smile, “I don't really know sir.” His brows furrowed, “You injured students inside the toilet until they have to be hospitalised, and you still say that you don't know what you did wrong?” “Dean, if I didn't defend myself, I would have been the one in that ambulance right now? Or is it that you want me to be there?” I cut in, my voice cold. For a while, no one said anything, then he sighed, “From your records, you were a meek girl in your old school who was well liked b
Chapter 10 Emelia's Pov Amelia came in with Jeremy who scowled at me, and this time, his disgust in me was clearly shown, it wasn't hidden like last time. “E… Emelia…” Nora peeked out from behind them, wringing her hands together, “I… I called mom. I heard that you had gotten hurt so…” “The first thing your mother does is to slap an injured person? How stupid can this family get, Nora?” “Shut your mouth and apologise! I sent you here because I thought the environment you were in was the one that contributed to your vile behaviour. I expected you to behave yourself here but you went ahead to cause trouble!” Amelia shouted, her voice sharp and trembling with fury.Amelia turned back to the parents, her voice shifting into something softer, more performative, “I deeply apologize for what my daughter did. I didn’t raise her to be a bully, and I’m truly sorry that your daughters had to experience such violence at her hands.”The room was quiet. The parents exchanged glances, none of t
Chapter 11 Emelia's Pov “How about you… repay me with your body?” I smirked, trapping her in between my arms and the walls. “W… what?!” Jasmine practically screamed, her high pitched voice made me wince slightly. But compared to her cute red face, it was nothing. “You… I… I don't like girls!” Jasmine yelled, covering her chest with her arms. The hallway was quiet for a moment, and I stared at her in shock. “You… You don't like…?” I was confused for a moment, I didn't understand what she meant but looking at the position we were in now and what I said, it was easy to arrive at the fact that I was asking her out. I burst into laughter, unable to help myself. The sheer horror on Jasmine’s face, the way her ears had gone red all the way to the tips, she looked like a tomato about to combust.“Relax.” I said between giggles, straightening up and taking a step back, “I was just joking.”Jasmine’s eyes widened even more, if that was possible, and she covered her face with both hands, “
Chapter 12 Emelia's Pov “I never said that.” I replied coolly, “But I do know how to fight dirty even with books.”“Classmate, I thought you said you didn't like fighting.” Nathan butted in, teasing. “Who? Me? If I ever said that, I hope you ignore it. Our beloved teacher's salary and reputation is on the line so it's up to us to defend him.” Teacher Mike was one of the few people who defended me in my past life, until I finished… Dropped out from school, he had always been right behind me, even pushing me to succeed. It's such a pity that after all he did for me… He was set up by a student who lied that he raped her and then eventually, he committed suicide. I and almost all the students here had attended his funeral. The only person who wasn't present was Nathan and another classmate, the girl. That's right, she was from this class. However, she's not here right now. A few scattered chuckles broke out, pulling me out from my thoughts. Then Nathan leaned forward, resting his chi
Chapter 13Emelia's Pov “Actually…” I sniffled, squeezing out tears from the corner of my eyes, “He's been following me for a while now and no matter how much I tell him to stop following me, I always see him where I am.” From the corner of my eyes, I glanced at Nathan who looked quite surprised. “He's a stalker?” “Huh? No, he's…” “You're being stalked and you haven't reported it yet to the police?” “No, I…” “I'll take care of him for you, don't worry.” Nathan turned around, stomping towards Kaidon angrily. At least let me speak first! I barely suppressed a groan as Nathan marched off like some righteous knight, ready to pick a fight he didn’t even understand.“Kaidon is going to kill him.” I muttered under my breath, already regretting my spontaneous tear-filled performance. But I didn’t have time to deal with the fallout. I felt a flicker of guilt stir in my chest, Kaidon wasn’t completely a monster. Controlling, yes. Overbearing, absolutely. But violent? Only when pushed. An
Chapter 30 Emelia's Pov “Emelia, you're back.” Jeremy said, stepping forward, “Since you're here now, follow me to apologise to Nora, I'm sure she'll forgive you.” He reached out to hold my arm, and I almost laughed out loud in disbelief, was he just expecting me to follow him obediently?!“What do you take me for Jeremy? A fool?” “Emelia…” “Apologising to Nora? I don't think that's going to be possible, and if I were you, I would be thinking of how to close the deal with Gordl Inc. You're not the only one who is fighting to sign an agreement with them.” I crossed my arms, smiling at his shock. “How did you know about the deal with Gordl Inc, who told you about it?!” He held both my arms, squeezing them. I bit back the wince that bubbled in my throat. “Let go of me.” My voice came out quiet. But Jeremy didn’t move. His grip only tightened, his panic flashing into something uglier, fear turning into violence, like it always did with men like him.“I said, let. Go.” This time, my
Chapter 29Emelia's Pov Another pause. Then a dangerous, quiet fury, “Who touched you?”I could picture him now, standing somewhere in that cold, office of his, his jaw ticking, one hand clenching into a fist while the other already reached for his car keys. The man had a temper laced in ice and vengeance, and he did not tolerate harm done to what he claimed as his.“Long story.” I muttered, brushing him off, “But the bill’s still pending, and they wouldn’t let me go unless someone guaranteed it. Thought you might want to know.”He didn’t respond immediately, but I could hear the rustling of movement, “Which hospital?”“Westwood Memorial. Also, bring the USB if you can, it should have finished transferring.”“I’ll be there in a few minutes.” He said tightly, like his words were loaded with a promise of war, “Don’t move. Don’t speak to anyone. Don’t even breathe wrong.”“Kaidon…” I started, but he’d already cut the line.I lowered the phone slowly and passed it back to Nathan, who was
Chapter 28 Emelia's Pov “My birth parents did this to me.” I said to them and all of them paused, neither moving but then, they all laughed. At the same damn time. “Emelia, I thought that at this time, you were finally going to say the truth but it seems I thought too highly of you again. How dare you lie to us? The RedField's had personally come to take you from the orphanage and even if they didn't like you, or even if they treated others better than you, they'd never do this to their child.” She pointed towards the bandages around my body, “Like I said, that's abuse! Maybe it's because you can't see it, but the amount of damage done on your back is something a parent will never do to their child! They are the people who gave birth to you!” “If you knew that you weren't going to believe me in the first place, why did you ask?” “Because I had no idea that your answer was going to be absurd! You…” “Miss, do you have the number of any family member we can call to pay for your bil
Chapter 27 Emelia’s Pov The first thing I became aware of was the sterile scent. It crawled into my nose and settled there, antiseptic, cold, and faintly metallic, someone must have brought me to the hospital. The second was the ache. A dull, deep pain that radiated through every bone and muscle in my body. A soft beeping sounded to my left, slow and steady. I blinked my eyes open and the first thing I saw were white ceilings, white walls. I really was in a hospital. There were bandages around my arms. My body was heavy, weighed down like I had chains hooked into my bones. I tried to sit up. “Don’t.” The voice was stern but calm, male, slightly aged. I turned my head sluggishly. A man in a white coat stood beside me, holding a clipboard and frowning behind his glasses. “You shouldn’t move, at least not yet.” He said, stepping closer, “You’re far too weak.” I licked my dry lips, my voice cracking as I asked, “Where...?” “You’re in ST John’s Hospital. You collapsed on the ro
Chapter 26 Emelia’s Pov “No!! Stop it!” The shriek tore from Nora’s throat like a wounded animal. She bolted toward me, but I didn’t stop. I picked up the stone again and slammed it down, once, twice, three times, until the glittering gems cracked and dented beneath the force of my rage.I could hear them screaming behind me. But I didn’t care. I didn’t stop.“Stop her!”“Emelia, enough!”Hands grabbed my arms, trying to pull me back, but I broke free with the strength of fury and pain. I dropped the stone and went to the gold necklace Nora loved most. I picked it up, crushed it under my heel until it twisted and bent like my soul had been under their hands.“Stop it!” Nora wailed, “That’s my gift! Don't break it anymore! Stop it!” “Now you care?” I spat, stepping back, panting. My arms were trembling. My vision was going blurry from the blood loss, but I didn’t care, “You cared when it was your necklace, but when it was my body being torn, none of you flinched. None of you fucking
Chapter 25Emelia's Pov “No!” Nora snapped, her voice sharp and panicked, “There’s… there’s no need for that.” “Why? Are you scared? Nora, since you're so sure that I'm the one who hid your jewelry under my bed, why don't you want to check it? This is your chance to finally kick me out of the house, Nora, why aren't you taking it?” “I…” “Emelia, stop your sarcastic words. Why would Nora want you to leave? You're the one who should leave yourself without anyone telling you!” “Liam, I promise that if you say another thing right now, I swear that you'll regret it. Try me.” I threatened, glaring at Liam. He looked at me in shock, his eyes twitching in anger, but he said nothing. “Bring the footage.” I continued, turning my gaze back to Nora.“You don't have to. I just remembered.” She said slowly. Everyone turned to her. Amelia furrowed her brows in confusion. Even Liam blinked.Nora pressed a trembling hand to her chest, her voice soft and honeyed again as she looked around, “I… I
Chapter 24 Emelia's Pov “You don’t want her punished?!” Edward growled, “She violated the trust I gave her when I let her back into this home!” “She probably only did it because she was desperate.” Nora whispered softly, “I mean, she hasn’t been doing so well lately, mentally and family law is too…” “Trust?” I laughed, cutting Nora off, “Don't delude yourself Mr RedField, you have never trusted me, not from the beginning so don't act like you're even trying to give me the benefit of doubt… I didn’t take the jewelry.” I repeated, louder this time. Edward’s eyes were bloodshot now, “You dare lie to my face? After being caught red-handed?” “Caught with something planted in my room.” I corrected. He stepped forward, furious, “Enough. Hold her down.” Two guards grabbed my arms. I didn’t struggle. I just laughed. “Oh, you’re laughing now?” Amelia sneered, “Still think this is a game, you ungrateful snake?” Edward turned to another servant, “Bring the whip from my study.” The at
Chapter 22 Emelia's Pov “M... Mom, Dad... The jewellery you gave me for my birthday... They... They're all missing! The same as the earrings I had been looking for." Gasps and murmurs followed her shriek, waking the entire house into chaos. Doors opened. Footsteps scrambled. The servants looked at each other in confusion and fear. By the time I came out of my room, rubbing my eyes like I had just been rudely awakened, the hallway was already filled with people, Edward, Amelia, Liam, Damien, Jeremy and Nora with red-rimmed eyes and a trembling bottom lip, and several of the house staff lingering near the stairs like deer sensing a storm. “She says her jewelry’s gone.” One of the guards whispered to another, “That emerald set… it’s worth enough to feed a small village for a year.” “What’s going on?” I asked, feigning ignorance as I walked up to the gathering crowd. Amelia glared at me like I had just asked the dumbest question on earth, “Don’t act like you don’t know.” I rais
Chapter 22 Emelia's Pov “Emelia, can I talk to you? I promise I won't take too much of your time.” Nora’s voice was as soft as ever, the very picture of a concerned sister. She stood at my door, all delicate innocence and forced modesty, like someone who'd walked straight out of a bad drama, hands clasped neatly in front of her, shoulders curved inward like she was scared I’d scream at her.I stared at her, silent. Part of me wanted to slam the door in her face and be done with it. But another part of me was curious to see what she had planned for me. So I stepped aside, gesturing silently for her to come in.“Thank you.” She murmured, stepping into my room with careful grace. Her eyes flitted around, taking in the room like she was judging it. I did not miss the fast glimmer of anger and jealousy that flickered through her eyes but I said nothing in regards to it. I didn’t offer her a seat. She took one anyway, placing herself delicately on the edge of my bed like she was trying n
