~Eliza~

“B-baby, what are you doing here?” Daniel asked breathlessly as he scrambled to pull up his trousers.

The smile died on my trembling lips as I watched my sister slowly pull down her skintight skirt. She smirked at me.

I had just entered Daniel’s office to share the most wonderful news, only to be faced with… this.

“Oh, look who finally decided to join the rest of us outside,” she snarked, and I stumbled back into the doorway.

“Shut up!” My husband hissed as he slowly approached me.

“D-Daniel, what is going on here?” My voice was hoarse and faint as my heart tripped in my chest.

“Oh, please! What do you think?” Isabella huffed, coming to stand beside my husband. “We were obviously fucking.”

My breath shuddered out of me at the confirmation of what I didn’t want to believe. My sister and my husband?

“Daniel, s-she’s lying, right?”

My husband of four years rolled his eyes and shrugged. “You have eyes, Eliza.”

“And you know what? This is as good a time as any,” he continued and snaked an arm around Isabella’s slender waist.

My wide eyes tracked the movement as shock and disbelief wound through me. Was this another nightmare? I dug my fingers into my palms, but nothing changed.

“In case you still haven’t figured it out, Isabella and I are in love,” he announced proudly, and she tittered wildly.

Oh, my God! This was not a dream!

“What are you saying, Daniel?” I demanded harshly, walking further into the room. “We are married for goodness’ sake!”

“How could you be—”

I couldn’t finish the sentence as pain spasmed in my stomach. I groaned and clutched my stomach while Isabella walked over to stand before me.

“You’re still as dumb as ever, Eliza,” she snorted. “Your dear husband is mine now.”

Through the pain lancing through my insides, I managed to whisper, “How long?”

Isabella opened her mouth, but Daniel cut her off. “That’s not important right now.”

“And I know you’re probably feeling hurt and all right now,” he said in a patronizing tone that set my teeth on edge, waving a dismissive hand in front of my face. “But you caused this.”

“It’s entirely your fault that I am in love with another woman.”

I blinked as a disbelieving gasp escaped me. “What are you even talking about?”

“You cheated on me with my own sister and somehow, it’s my fault?!”

Daniel tutted as if I were a disobedient child and wagged a finger at me. “After the car crash, it has become so fucking depressing to be around you.”

His lips twisted in a disgusted grimace that broke my heart even more. “You mean the car crash that took our baby from us?” My voice broke as tears burned in my eyes.

“Well, you just said our baby. It was ours, Eliza!” he snapped. “But all the time, you acted like it was just your loss.”

“What else was I supposed to do? Uh?”

His voice gentled slightly as he added, “I am a man with needs, Eliza, and you just don’t satisfy me.”

“B-but I… we—”

Isabella cut into my stammering. “B-b-but what, Eliza?” she mocked ruthlessly.

“The plain truth is that Daniel is madly obsessed with me, so you can just,” she finished by shooing me away with her perfectly manicured nails.

“You are so useless, you know that? You couldn’t even keep your baby and now, you lost your man too.”

“Do I need to remind you that the only reason we lost that baby was because of your stupidity?” Daniel asked, and my eyes snapped to him in disbelief.

Pain blossomed in my chest at their callous words, along with the cramping in my stomach. At least, I could understand Isabella’s wickedness since she has always hated me right from when we were kids.

But the man standing before me was a total stranger, nothing like the one who held me when I fell apart. I thought I had the perfect life, the perfect husband.

But oh, how terribly wrong I was.

“How could you say that to me, Daniel?” I cried, hating how pitiful I sounded.

These bastards didn’t deserve my tears. I shouldn’t waste any more time mourning the life that had obviously been a cruel lie all along.

“Actually, damn you!” I snarled even as my body shook. “Pack your shit and get the hell out of my company right this minute!”

There was silence for a second before the two of them burst into loud laughter, as if I had just said the funniest thing. Slowly, a shiver of foreboding trickled down my spine as I stared at them.

Still chuckling, Daniel straightened to look me right in the eyes. “Wake up, darling,” he drawled.

“This all belongs to me now,” he said, throwing his arms wide to encompass the luxurious space.

For the second time in less than twenty minutes, the wind was knocked out of me. “What?” I whispered. “This… this company is mine, Daniel.”

“Oh, not anymore, sweetheart,” he replied in the same patronising tone that made me long to wipe that stupid smirk off his face.

I stumbled on nothing as understanding crashed into me with full force. Before I could gather my scattered senses, Daniel continued speaking.

“By the way, I’m also divorcing you.”

Isabella let out a joyous squeal that barely penetrated the fog that had clouded my mind. Through a red haze, I watched her jump on Daniel and plant a wet, sloppy kiss on his mouth.

Bile rose to my throat and my stomach turned queasy as the ache became even more insistent. I grabbed the edge of the doorway to keep from falling flat on my face. I didn’t need any more humiliation than I already got.

When they finally parted with a loud pop, Daniel sneered, “Don’t even bother trying anything stupid, Lizzie darling. I have transferred everything we own into my name only.”

His lips pulled up in a wicked grin. “I got you good.” He turned and sauntered to plop down on his seat.

I opened my mouth to scream at him, but could only groan and bend over, clutching my stomach as the pain ramped up.

Through my groanings, I heard Daniel say, “Get in here.”

Then, Isabella bent to hiss in my ear, “I win again, sister.”

Then she stepped back and joined Damien behind the desk. Within minutes, two security men burst into the office.

“Take her away and don’t ever let her into this building again,” Daniel ordered curtly, and they grabbed my arms.

“You will pay for this, Daniel!” I raged, struggling as best as I could with the ache in my stomach.

But all I got in return was the mocking laughter from Daniel and Isabella. After a moment, I gave up and just went along as the men dragged me away.

They unceremoniously dumped me on the pavement outside the company I had handed to my husband with my own hands and walked inside.

I lay on the floor, curled up as black spots dotted my vision. Slowly, the small pregnancy test stick I had been hiding in my right palm dropped onto the floor.

The last thing I saw before darkness mercifully took over was the two lines on the stick.

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 36

~Eliza~Luca froze mid-reach into his pants’ pocket and stared at me like I had lost my mind.An irrational giggle rose in my throat as I slowly drew back the hand I had instinctively shot out. At that moment, it struck me just how funny the situation was.Surprisingly, he hadn’t seemed freaked out by my intense reaction to what probably looked like nothing. But right now, he was wide-eyed, gaping at me as if he was one more word away from running out of the office and away from me.A snort escaped me at the image of Luca screaming as he raced out of here. I clamped a hand over my mouth and gave him an innocent smile. At least, I hoped it would pass off as innocent.“What I meant was that there’s no need to bother Atlas,” I said smoothly and made my lips stretch into a wider smile.“He’s probably busy and all that, so don’t,” I added and paused to slash my hand in the air between us. “Do not call him.”Luca’s head started to bob up and down before he caught himself and narrowed his ey

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 35

~Eliza~No matter how much I tried to get those words out of my mind, I just couldn’t.Despite my best attempt to remain unaffected by what I heard, a part of me was still stuck on the fact that Atlas had kept such important information from me.Honestly, I was stung by the realization that to him this was business, no more, no less. And yes, I was well aware of what I was getting into when I agreed to marry him, but I thought…I had managed to convince myself that the days we spent together, eating breakfast, had brought us closer. How wrong I was.All along, he had been focused on getting what he needed. All he wanted was a bride and I was only the convenient choice. Any other woman would have made the cut, even if it hadn't been me.I inhaled deeply and shook my head once, trying to ignore the sharp twist in my chest at that humbling thought. Before I could closely examine why I would feel pain at the thought of Atlas marrying another woman, a female customer stepped up to the desk

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 34

~Atlas~Something was wrong.Eliza was still her usual self, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that she had changed. Somehow, her morning smiles now looked forced and way too polite. And I was losing my mind, wondering if maybe, I was just seeing things.I cleared my throat and dropped my cup of coffee. “So, uh, how’s the food?” I asked in a casual tone.Eliza looked from her plate and gave me a blank look. Then she blinked and smiled. “It’s alright.” Then she resumed eating, her shoulders hunched over her food.Instead of the usual grimace whenever she had to eat the abominations I regularly made for us, she was cool. There was no hint of complaint on her face and she seemed almost happy to be eating soggy pancakes.I had even made today’s meal extra disgusting to draw some form of reaction from her, but Eliza remained distant and unaffected.I stared at her bent head like I could dig out the answers I needed with the force of my thoughts only. But no matter how hard I watched, she ga

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 33

~Eliza~Curiosity burned hot within me, warring with a sense of foreboding creeping up my spine.“Exactly,” one of the women exclaimed. “Atlas rushed to marry because of what Dad said.”“Imagine him parading that gold digger around, trying to act like he is better than us,” someone sniffed disdainfully.“If Dad hadn’t forced him to either get married or lose the inheritance, he wouldn’t even attend this dinner, I’m sure.”“And to think that she used to be married to Daniel.” There was a tutting sound and then, “Atlas really has poor taste, marrying his nephew’s ex-wife.”Someone laughed derisively. “Trust me, that inheritance is enough motivation for anyone to do anything, including Atlas.”Each word that dropped from the women, whom I presume to be two of Atlas’ sisters, felt like a strike to my chest. My breathing paused and restarted as I heard the real reason Atlas married me.“Yeah, he has always been like that, right? So serious and way too ambitious,” a woman muttered. “I still

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 32

~Eliza~It has been about one hour since I met Atlas’ father and I think I want him to adopt me.The man has already offered me everything from a glass of ridiculously expensive wine to the latest model of a fast car. All while talking trash about his son in a fond, adorable way.Atlas himself lounged beside me, his arm resting on the back of my chair. His entire posture was relaxed, at least, outwardly. But I could feel the tension radiating from him even though none of it showed on his face.I stole a glance at him and saw he had his head slightly cocked as he paid attention to what the woman sitting beside him was saying. She had been introduced as Robin, the daughter of someone or the other. Honestly, after a few names and faces, I lost track of who was who.But Robin had been decidedly cool towards me when we met. She had run her baby-blue eyes over me in a dismissive way that, despite my best intentions, stung. Then she tossed her mane of platinum blond hair and looked away befo

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 31

~Eliza~The moment we stepped inside the room, the chattering and murmuring ceased.Instantly, I felt stares locked onto me, probing and searching, trying to dig into me to get any vulnerabilities.I inhaled deeply, straightened my spine, and raised my chin. I had no intention to let that happen, though. This time, I was better prepared and crummy ex-husband or not, I was going to see this through.I kept my eyes forward as Atlas walked us through the crowd of people standing around the large room. Through the corners of my eyes, I could see that my earlier assumption about Atlas’ family was right.“Is everyone a part of your family?” I whispered to Atlas under my breath. He let out a quiet chuckle and inclined his head to someone before replying to me. “Well, not all of them actually.”“Maybe about seventy percent of them,” he added, and I looked up with a frown.“Seventy?” I echoed, unable to hide my surprise.“Yeah,” he agreed. “Obviously, we are quite a lot.”A lot? I thought, run

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 4

~Atlas~After six long years, she was finally back in my life. Eliza Monroe.I was close enough to touch her, but now, she was unconscious on a hospital bed. And my nephew put her there. My hands curled into fists at my sides and I hated the feeling of helplessness curling through me.“What the hel

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 3

~Eliza~“I didn't realize you found the idea of marrying me so distasteful, Eliza,” Atlas bit out, his gaze sharpening on me.“Well, for one, you are Daniel’s uncle,” I stated, widening my eyes at him incredulously. “What—”“Step uncle.”“will everyone think?” I finished determinedly.“Why do you c

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 2

~Eliza~Tingles spread from my head to my toes.I kept my eyes closed for a moment longer, trying to keep reality from rushing back in, but it was useless. Slowly, I opened my eyes. The ceiling above me was high and cream-coloured, with a pale light fixture at its centre. I turned my head and notic

  • The Billionaire's Obsession   Chapter 5

~Eliza~I still couldn’t believe it.Twisting my simple gold band on my finger, my heart thudded against my ribcage as it sank in that I was actually married. For the second time. To my ex-boyfriend. Who was also my ex-husband’s uncle. If the evidence weren’t staring me right in the eye this moment
