Chapter 14

I shook my head to clear my mind of the thoughts that had been accumulating in my head, and just went straight down the stairs to their kitchen.

I heard voices not far from where I was standing when I finally made it to the ground floor. I instantly rolled my eyes around, trying to figure out where the noises were coming from because they seemed like they were arguing.

“Why is he going to the company tomorrow?”

My feet quickly stopped when I recognized Daniella's voice. I slowly stepped closer to the corner of the wall to hide myself and listen to what they were talking about.

“Of course, Jaxson won’t let me have Ruegold this easily. Especially since he already lost one to me. But, I’m not done until there’s more left in that stupid rascal. So, I will take you to the corporation tomorrow to accompany me. ”

“But, Lance… Aren't you just making him even furious because of what you're doing?”

“Exactly my point! That’s precisely what I want to happen. I want him to get sick of us and leave everything all by himself. I want to scrape that pure blooded until there is nothing left in him.”

Because of the words I was hearing, my eyes gradually widened, together with the hard scowl on my brow. I couldn't see their faces and could only hear their voices, but it seemed like their cruelty was stinging me.

“Uh? Don't give me that face, Daniella. You know it’s not my fault that after you got pregnant with me you still didn’t stay away from Jaxson and keep giving him hope that you two will still get married. Didn’t I just tell you to dump him and say that you actually love me and not him?” Lance rambled in an annoying and arrogant voice. “But, I prefer what you did, though. You did a good job. Because in the end, I was the one who had something my spoiled brother envied. I want to thank you for that.” Lance's evil laughter reverberated.

After everything they had done to Jaxson, I thought they were being cruel by continuing to show their faces to him. I didn't imagine there would be more for them to show. They have no moral compass, they are tormenting someone who has done nothing but loves them.

They're even more terrifying than the monster. They nonchalantly discuss their next move in bringing down Jaxson, as that man upstairs struggles to get by without consuming liquor.

I want to rant and confront Jaxson that he is such a coward for allowing them to do this to him. But, come to think of it, nothing hurts more than being betrayed by those you most trust. Because it's not just your trust that has been shattered, but it vanished along with the relationship that you built.

“Do you believe me now?”

I nearly shrieked in shock when Finn suddenly popped up behind me.

Fortunately, I kept my mouth shut because they might hear that I was here and had been listening to their conversation.

“Don't worry, they are gone.”

I felt Finn's hand grasp my arm to remove it from covering my mouth.

“—Now you know why I want Jaxson to forget about Daniella, as soon as possible.” he muttered, softly. “Lance will use her as long as Jaxson still cares for her.”

“I'm going to help him!” I uttered without a doubt. “But, I would like to know more about Lance, and the source of his anger towards his brother first. Do you know anything about what happened before it all became like this?”

I waited for Finn to say something when he took a deep breath as his lips pressed tightly together. “I don't know everything, but I still know something that I can share.”

“My father became the Madrigal’s family attorney even before I was born. Dad said he started before Jaxson’s mother and father got married. So I think he pretty much knows almost everything.” Finn said, while I was just quietly listening to him and preparing a tub and towel that I would use to wipe Jaxson upstairs.

“- Based on what I remember from my dad's stories about the Madrigal family since I was a child, their family has always been so wealthy and entitled in business, yet their small family still lives a happy and simple life. He was an only child so he was spoiled by his parents. However, Jax began to become lethargic when his dear mother said goodbye to them early. Everyone was shocked by its sudden death in an accident. Her body was found in a ravine inside the car and it was discovered that the brakes were broken, which caused the accident.”

It seems like I feel even more sorry for Jaxson’s situation as I get to know more about his past.

“Dad still can't forget that night before the accident. Jax's mother secretly approached him and went to his office without bringing a single guard. It was only then that my dad began to have skepticism.” Finn continued in his sluggish voice. “Dad had an inkling that before the accident happened, Jax's mother knew that her life was in danger. He then suspected that someone might have threatened her to take his life. Because Mrs. Madrigal didn't just go alone to his office for a casual conversation. She was there, to make her last will and testament. My father still has the document and audio record of his mother’s trembling voice, that Jax never even heard. Mrs. Madrigal wants all her assets to be transferred to his only son, and not to anyone else.”

“Didn’t Jaxson get a chance to hear his mother’s last will and testament? But why? Doesn't he have a right to that too?” I showered him with questions.

“My father let Mr. Madrigal hears the audio recording. He also opens a suspicion that he have and asked Mr. Madrigal if he is willing to get a prosecutor to investigate the accident. But, he immediately denied it at that moment without any hesitation and asked my father to keep the audio recording from Jaxson. Though, all of her mother’s assets are with Jaxson now because my father followed the will of Mrs. Madrigal.”

I can't help but to let out a deep sigh. “Sadly, even Jaxson's father is like this to him.”

“See why I am always here?” Finn let out. “I don’t care if Jaxson only knows me as their attorney’s son, because I know a lot about him. And I know he needs someone loyal to him and a friend.”

The gloom I was feeling vanished when I heard Finn’s words. A smile rose before lifting my hand to his shoulder. “Please promise me that you will never change and eventually leave Jaxson, Finn. Even if he doesn't realize it now, I know that one day he will thank you for all that you are doing.” I said calmly.

He answered me with a sweet smile that showed the deep dimples on his left cheek. It's really cute.

“How old are you?” I asked because his aura seemed so fresh and he looked even younger than me.

“25. I know I look young, considering that I am studying law. I just find it fun rather than a mass problem, so… ” he boasted

So, he also knew that he looked too young to be a lawyer. At first, he was really intimidating, but when I got to know Finn better it was as if he were a cute and loving child.

“- Okay, I'll leave you here now Cattleya. I think my dad can help us find more about Lance. I didn’t ask about him back then because I truly don’t care about that scoundrel. Since he did nothing but keep Jax and me apart and always intruded on our conversations. I will come back tomorrow, and tell you once I find out more.”

I just nodded at him in response and then proceeded to fetch cold water and pour it into the bucket with the towel that I would take upstairs for Jaxson. I also got a glass of water just in case he woke up because this will quench his thirst and somehow help him sober up. I reckon he drank too much alcohol tonight.

Perhaps I'll make him some hot soup before he leaves tomorrow for their company. It's not a good idea for him to go there looking wasted and foolish. He still has to make himself appear more decent than his evil brother Lance.

When I got back upstairs I couldn't help but grin at the sight of Finn leaving Jaxson's bedroom door open. Though he really doesn’t say anything, he is a very thoughtful person even in small things.

Jaxson's melancholy look reappeared on me as I entered the room. He is still in the same position where Finn and I left him earlier.

I quietly stepped closer to Jaxson and set down the tray I was holding with only a tub and a glass of water while slowly sitting on the side of the bed he was lying on.

I started by removing his necktie, which had wrapped around his neck and was perhaps choking him on. I began wiping his face with a wet towel to remove the sweat and alcohol that had crusted on his face while he had been drinking. This is why Finn finds him stinks so much.

I used my left hand to lift his hair that was already on his forehead due to sweat. This is the first time I’ve seen Jaxson has his hair down because his hair has always been brushed up.

As I gently pressed the wet towel to his face, I couldn't help but stare at him as he rested deeply.

Why do handsome people always look like angels when they sleep?

Jaxson's face is so gentle that you can't afford to think that he would do something bad. He looks like a child who is tired of playing and has only now been able to rest. I also began to gently wipe Jaxson’s steep nose, and when I reached his lips, I was suddenly swallowed up by the extreme softness of them that I could feel behind the towel. I was momentarily stunned by it as I tapped it lightly, before quickly switching to wiping his neck because I didn’t like the effect of his lips on my heartbeat.

Even as my gaze turned downward I still couldn’t stop myself from staring into his face.

I just felt my hand instinctively move closer to his face. As I got closer, I could feel my heart pumping faster and quicker. Before going back to his forehead, I stroked my fingers over his thick eyebrow and caressed it, then down to his nose and explored it as I seemed to carve it again.

My fingers crawled over the top of Jaxson's lips, feeling the smoothness as they glided back and forth below and above his lip.

I quickly withdrew my hand from his face when Jaxson's mouth opened at the same time as his eyes.
