Chapter Three

When the doctor left, the butler made a call, then stood up.

Shortly after, one of the guards who had been standing outside the door came inside. He exchanged glances with the butler, before standing at the edge of the bed.

The butler let out a sigh and walked out, after glancing at her.

Hailey returned her attention to the bed. She wanted to hold his hand again but the guard stopped her.

"Sorry, Ma'am. You can't touch Master," he said flatly.

Hailey withdrew her hands with a sigh. She kept her eyes glued to the floor and her head will jerk up anytime she sensed him move under the sheet.

Several minutes passed by and she was dozing off when the door opened again and the butler walked in, now dressed in a new set of clothes and holding a large bag.

He went to the couch and the bodyguard helped him take out boxes of food from the bag. Then he returned with two boxes on a tray and gave her.

"I heard from the servants that you didn't eat since last night," said the butler. It was the first time he had spoken to her and his tone was not friendly.

Hailey stared at the food in a trance.

"Don't worry, I'll never dream of harming Master's child. The food is safe." He chuckled with a shake of his head and gestured to the bodyguard who took two boxes and walked out.

Hailey did not mind his words. He had the right to be mad at her. She opened the boxes and started eating, as she was screamingly hungry. Her stomach kept grumbling since last night and she was so ravenous. However, food had been far from her mind.

She finished eating from the first box and was halfway into the second one when he moved again. Hailey put the box away and moved to his side.

Kendrick groaned and mumbled some words before his eyes fluttered open. He squinted his eyes to adjust them to the light and without the bodyguard to stop her, Hailey held his hand.

"Ken," she called out softly. He turned his head to the side and he looked at her with hazy eyes.

Hailey sniffed as her eyes watered. "I'm so sorry," she whispered and squeezed his hand. If she knew things would come to this, she would have asked her sister to come up with another plan. She had almost killed a life. And it was her greatest misdoing.

Kendrick's brows knitted into a frown and he pried his hand away from her grip. He opened his mouth and in a weak voice, he muttered, "Get out?"

"Huh?" Hailey blinked.

"I said leave." Kendrick looked away and faced the other side. The butler had come to their side and heard the exchange between them.

"Ma'am, please." He signaled her to the door with a stoic expression.

Hailey dropped her head and pushed herself up the chair. She gave the bed a last look and trudged out of the ward.

Her wish had finally come true. He had asked her to leave. But why wasn't she happy?

She left the hospital and went back to the mansion. The servants avoided her gaze as each went on with their work.

Hailey went upstairs and packed all her clothes inside her luggage. After that, she took a bath and got changed into comfortable clothes; a blouse and jeans trousers. She packed her hair into a ponytail, and left in her car.

Her phone rang after some minutes as she drove through the city.

Hailey sighed at the sight of the name displayed on the screen. "Chloe," she answered the phone and placed it on her ear.

"How did it go, Hailey?" Chloe's interrogating voice came from the other end. "Did it work? Is he sick right now?"

"I'm on my way home," Hailey replied calmly.

"So it worked." Chloe's voice rose in excitement. "That is great, I'll let Rob know this instant."

"Don't bother, I'll give him a call myself."

Hailey hung up after hearing a reply from her sister. She rubbed her stomach with one hand while the other hand was on the steering wheel.

Her eyes suddenly caught a billboard on one of the tall skyscrapers. Some news was displayed on it. And Kendrick's picture popped up on the screen, in his black tuxedo. It was about the business deal he had just closed from abroad.

She quickly looked away and focused on the road. Any time she saw his face, the guilt would only magnify in her heart. The man she had almost murdered. Her child's father.

When she reached her home, the securities opened the gate.

Hailey spotted her father standing at the large door. Her stepmother stood beside him as they conversed with each other.

She pulled over and got down from the car.

When they noticed her, her father's eyes widened and her step-mother gasped.

"So it is true," her stepmother said and Hailey frowned.

"What are you doing here!?"

Her head whipped to her father who had suddenly thundered. What was wrong with them?

Hailey lowered her head. "F– Father... Kendrick and I are no longer together?"

"You have the guts!" Her father bellowed. "You have the guts to come back here, you evil woman!"

Hailey flinched and her pupils expanded.

"How shameless of you to think of coming here. Do you want us to be labeled as evil people like you? Is this how we raised you?" Her stepmother pointed at her. "Your husband is laying in the hospital, hanging between life and death because you poisoned him. If it wasn't for your sister, who would have known your true color?"

Hailey took a step back with a hand on her chest. They heard it from Chloe? How was that possible?

"You were lucky to marry into that family. Tell me, in this country, where would you find such wealth and status?" Her father added. "Now, you've brought shame to this household and also to yourself. Your grandfather must hear of this."

"No." Haily broke out of her shock and quickly shook her head. "Father, please. D– Don't let grandfather know."
