Julian's voice filled the ballroom.

"She suspects nothing. The trust fund is in her name but I can access it once we're married. After the wedding, we figure out the rest."

The room went silent. Not the kind of silence that follows a bad joke. The kind that follows a car crash. The kind that makes people forget how to breathe.

Julian stood frozen. His face was white. His glass was still in his hand. He didn't move. He didn't speak. He just stood there while his own voice played over the speakers.

"She's useful. That's all. Once I have the money, I'll figure out what to do with her."

I watched him. I didn't smile. I didn't feel triumphant. I just watched.

The recording continued. Julian's voice. Mira's voice. The plan. The betrayal. The lies. Everything they'd said to each other. Everything they'd said about me.

People were staring. Some were recording. Some were whispering. Some were already walking toward the exit. They didn't want to be associated with what was happening. They didn't want to be in the room when it all came crashing down.

Adrian stood beside me. He didn't move. He didn't speak. He just stood there.

The recording ended.

The silence that followed was worse than the recording.

Julian turned. He looked at me. His eyes were wild. His hands were shaking. He opened his mouth to speak. Nothing came out.

Adrian stepped forward.

"I think you should leave," he said.

Julian didn't move. He just stared at me.

"You," he said. "You did this."

I didn't respond.

"You planned this. You set this up. You—"

"Walk away," Adrian said again. His voice was quiet. It was the most dangerous I'd ever heard it.

Julian looked at him. Then at me. Then at the room. Everyone was watching. Everyone was waiting.

He turned and walked toward the exit. His steps were unsteady. He bumped into a table. A glass fell. He didn't stop.

Mira appeared from somewhere. She followed him. She didn't look at me. She didn't look at anyone. She just walked. Her heels clicked against the marble floor. The sound echoed in the silence.

The doors closed behind them.

The room erupted.

---

People were talking. Some were laughing. Some were shouting. Some were already on their phones. The journalists who had been standing by the bar were now in the middle of the room. Claire Bennett was among them. She wasn't writing. She was just watching.

Adrian turned to me.

"We should go," he said.

"Not yet."

He looked at me. He didn't argue.

I walked to the stage. The microphone was still on. I picked it up. The room went quiet again.

"My name is Elena Voss," I said. "Some of you know me. Some of you know my mother. Margaret Voss. She was murdered fifteen years ago by Henry Ashford and his associates. For fifteen years, no one was held accountable. That changes tonight."

I paused. No one spoke.

"The evidence you just heard is only part of it. The rest has been delivered to the authorities. To the FBI. To every major news outlet in the country. By tomorrow morning, everyone will know what Henry Ashford did. What Julian Ashford did. What they've been doing for decades."

I looked at the room. At the faces. At the people who had protected them. At the people who had looked away.

"I'm not asking for your sympathy. I'm not asking for your support. I'm just telling you what's coming. And I'm telling you that I'm not going to stop until everyone who was involved pays for what they did."

I set the microphone down. I walked off the stage.

Adrian was waiting for me.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Yes."

We walked to the exit together. The cameras flashed. The journalists called my name. I didn't stop. I didn't speak. I just walked.

The car was waiting. Sloane was at the wheel.

We got in. The doors closed.

---

The drive back to the penthouse was silent.

I stared out the window. The city lights slid past. I didn't see them. I was thinking about Julian's face. About the way he'd looked when he heard his own voice. About the way he'd walked away.

I'd waited for this moment for two lifetimes. I'd planned it. I'd dreamed about it. I'd imagined how it would feel.

I didn't feel anything.

Adrian didn't speak. He didn't reach for me. He didn't take my hand. He just sat beside me.

When we reached the penthouse, he opened the door. I got out. I walked inside. He followed.

I walked to the living room. I sat on the couch. He sat beside me.

We didn't speak.

After a while, I said, "It's done."

"Yes."

"It's over."

"Not yet."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"Julian is still out there. Henry is still out there. Volkov is still out there."

"I know."

"But the hard part is over. The secret is out. Everyone knows what they did."

"Yes."

I leaned back. I closed my eyes.

"I thought I'd feel something," I said. "I thought I'd feel triumphant. Or satisfied. Or something."

"And you don't?"

"No."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "You will."

"When?"

"When you stop looking for it. When you stop expecting it. When you just let yourself live."

I opened my eyes. I looked at him.

"You sound like you know what you're talking about."

"I do."

We sat there. The city hummed outside. The clock ticked.

After a while, I stood. I walked to my room. I closed the door.

I didn't sleep. I didn't try to.

I just sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

Tomorrow, everything changes.

Tomorrow, I start living.

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Twenty: The Beginning

I woke up before the sun.Not because of a nightmare. Not because of a plan. Not because of anything. I just woke up. The room was dark. The city was quiet. Adrian was beside me. His breathing was slow. Steady. I listened to it for a while. Then I got up.I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island. The sky outside the window started to lighten. Gray. Then pink. Then gold.I didn't think about Volkov. I didn't think about Julian. I didn't think about Henry. I didn't think about my father. I didn't think about Mira. I just drank my coffee. And for the first time in two lifetimes, that was enough.Adrian appeared behind me. He poured himself a cup. He sat across from me."You're up early," he said."I slept."He looked at me. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.We drank in silence. The kitchen was warm. The city hummed outside. After a while, he said, "What do you want to do today?"I considered the question. I thought about the office. About the cases. About the

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Nineteen: The Vow

Adrian asked me to renew our vows on a Monday. Not with a grand gesture. Not with flowers or candles or a speech. He asked over breakfast, in the same tone he used to discuss the weather."I want to renew our vows," he said.I set down my coffee. "What?""I want to renew our vows. Not because anything's wrong. Not because I want to start over. Because I want to say it again. In front of the people who matter. Without a contract. Without a plan. Just us."I looked at him. He looked at me."When?""This weekend. If you want."I considered the question. I thought about the first wedding. The small chapel. The simple vows. The people who had stood beside us. I thought about everything that had come after. Everything we'd survived. Everything we'd built."Okay," I said.He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something warm."Good," he said.---The ceremony was even smaller than the first one.Just us. Just Daniel. Just Thomas. Just Beatriz. Just Felix. Just Sloane. A ha

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: The Peace

It came without warning. Not peace like a lightning strike. Not peace like a revelation. Just a morning when I woke up and nothing hurt. No tightness in my chest. No weight on my shoulders. No voice in the back of my head telling me I wasn't done yet.I lay in bed for a long time. The light came through the curtains. The city hummed outside. I listened to it. I didn't count the cracks. I didn't think about the past. I just lay there.Adrian was beside me. He was still asleep. His breathing was slow. Steady. I watched him for a while. The way his chest rose and fell. The way his hand lay open on the pillow between us. Close enough to touch. I didn't touch it. I didn't need to.I got up. I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island and drank it slowly. The city woke up around me. Cars. Lights. People. I watched it all through the window. It didn't feel like a threat. It didn't feel like something I had to survive. It just felt like a city. Like a place where people lived.

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Seventeen: The Visit

The prison was two hours north of the city.I drove alone. I didn't tell Adrian. I didn't tell Daniel. I just got in the car and drove. The same way I'd driven to the cemetery. The same way I'd driven to my father's cabin. The same way I'd driven to every difficult thing I'd ever had to face. The building was gray. Concrete. Windowless. The kind of place that was designed to make you feel small before you even walked through the door.I parked. I sat in the car for a long time. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just sat there. Then I got out.---The visiting room was large.Tables. Chairs. Vending machines. A guard by the door. Fluorescent lights that hummed. The kind of room where people spoke in low voices and tried not to cry.I sat at a table near the back. I waited.Mira walked in five minutes later. She looked different. Thinner. Paler. Her hair was pulled back. No makeup. No jewelry. Just a plain gray uniform and hands that wouldn't stop moving. She sat across from me. She di

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Sixteen: The Business Milestone

The firm hit its first major milestone on a Wednesday.I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. Sarah came into my office that morning with a folder and a look on her face I hadn't seen before."We closed the Grayson case," she said.I set down my pen. "What?""The Grayson case. The man whose business partner disappeared. We found him. He's alive. He's in witness protection. He testified against the people who threatened him."I looked at her. She looked at me."We closed it.""We closed it."She set the folder on my desk. I opened it. The report. The evidence. The outcome. Everything we'd worked on for months. Everything we'd built.I closed the folder. I looked at the window. At the city. At the light."Good," I said.Sarah nodded. She didn't smile. But something in her expression shifted. Something lighter."We have six clients now," she said. "Three journalists. Two investigators. One family. We're growing."I looked at her. She looked at me."We're building something," I said."We a

I answered."He's gone," she said.I didn't respond."He passed an hour ago. In his sleep. He wasn't alone. I was there."I set the phone down. I looked at Adrian. He looked at me. He didn't ask what had happened. He could see it on my face."My father died," I said.He set down the pan. He walked to me. He didn't reach for me. He didn't take my hand.
