The ballroom didn't empty all at once.

It emptied in waves. First the people who didn't want to be seen. Then the people who didn't want to be questioned. Then the people who simply didn't want to be there when the authorities arrived.

By the time Sloane pulled the car around, half the guests were gone. The other half were standing in clusters, phones in hand, watching the doors.

I didn't look back.

We drove in silence. The city slid past the windows. Neon signs. Empty streets. The occasional taxi. I didn't see any of it.

Adrian sat beside me. He didn't speak. He didn't reach for me. He just sat there.

When we reached the penthouse, Sloane parked in the underground garage. She didn't get out. She didn't say anything. She just waited.

Adrian opened the door. I got out. He followed. We walked to the elevator. The doors closed. The car rose.

Neither of us spoke.

The penthouse was quiet. The same quiet it always was. The same quiet I'd grown used to. I walked to the living room. I sat on the couch.

Adrian sat beside me.

We didn't speak.

---

I don't know how long we sat there.

The clock ticked. The city hummed. My phone buzzed. Then again. Then again. I didn't check it. I didn't need to. I knew who it was. Journalists. Acquaintances. People who wanted to know what had happened. People who wanted to know what I knew.

Adrian's phone buzzed too. He didn't check it either.

After a while, he said, "Felix is handling the press."

"Good."

"Sloane is handling security."

"Good."

"Daniel is in his room. He's fine."

"Good."

He didn't say anything else. I didn't either.

I thought about the recording. Julian's voice. Mira's voice. The words they'd said. The plans they'd made. The way they'd laughed at me. The way they'd dismissed me.

I thought about my mother. About her journal. About her hope.

I thought about the woman I used to be. The woman who trusted too easily. The woman who died.

I wasn't her anymore.

---

At some point, I stood.

I walked to the kitchen. I made tea. I didn't drink it. I just held the cup. The warmth seeped into my hands. I didn't feel it.

Adrian appeared in the doorway. He didn't say anything. He just stood there.

"You should sleep," he said.

"I can't."

"I know."

He walked to the island. He sat down. He didn't reach for me. He didn't take my hand. He just sat there.

"Julian is going to retaliate," I said.

"I know."

"He's going to come after me. Or you. Or Daniel."

"I know."

"We need to be ready."

"We are."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"How do you know?"

"Because we've been preparing for this since the day you walked into my office. Because Felix has been tracking Julian's every move. Because Sloane has a team on every exit. Because I'm not going to let him touch you."

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

He stood. He walked to the counter. He stood beside me.

"Drink your tea," he said.

I drank it. It was cold. I didn't care.

---

The next morning, Felix called.

I was in my office. I hadn't slept. I'd been staring at my laptop for hours, reading the news coverage, watching the story spread. It was everywhere. Every outlet. Every platform. Every headline.

Ashford Family Exposed.

Julian Ashford Accused of Fraud, Conspiracy, and Murder.

The Voss Conspiracy: A Daughter's Fight for Justice.

I read them all. I didn't feel anything.

Felix's voice was tight.

"Julian is gone," he said.

"What do you mean?"

"His apartment is empty. His phone is off. His car is still in the garage."

"Where is he?"

"We don't know. We're tracking his credit cards. His known associates. Everything. But he's smart. He's not going to make it easy."

I closed my laptop. I stood.

"Find him," I said.

"We're trying."

"Try harder."

I hung up.

---

That afternoon, I found Daniel in the living room.

He was sitting on the couch. He was watching the news. The same story. The same headlines. He didn't look at me when I entered.

"You okay?" I asked.

"No."

I sat beside him.

"I keep thinking about Mom," he said. "About what she would say if she could see this."

"She'd be proud."

"You don't know that."

"I know enough."

He looked at me. He looked at me the way he used to when we were children.

"I'm glad you're my sister," he said.

I didn't respond. I didn't know how.

We sat there. The news played. The city hummed.

After a while, he said, "What happens now?"

"We find Julian. We finish this."

"And then?"

I considered the question. I thought about my mother. I thought about Adrian. I thought about everything that had happened. Everything that was still to come.

"Then we live," I said.

He nodded. He didn't ask anything else.

---

That night, I found Adrian in his office.

He was on the phone. He hung up when he saw me.

"Anything?" I asked.

"No. Julian is still missing."

"He's not missing. He's hiding."

"Same thing."

I sat across from him. I folded my hands on his desk.

"We need to find him before he does something stupid."

"I know."

"He's desperate. He's cornered. He's dangerous."

"I know."

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"We'll find him," he said.

"When?"

"Soon."

I stood. I walked to the door. I paused.

"Adrian."

He looked up.

"Thank you. For everything."

He didn't respond. He just looked at me.

"Don't thank me yet," he said. "We haven't won anything."

"We will."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

I left.

I woke up before the sun.Not because of a nightmare. Not because of a plan. Not because of anything. I just woke up. The room was dark. The city was quiet. Adrian was beside me. His breathing was slow. Steady. I listened to it for a while. Then I got up.I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island. The sky outside the window started to lighten. Gray. Then pink. Then gold.I didn't think about Volkov. I didn't think about Julian. I didn't think about Henry. I didn't think about my father. I didn't think about Mira. I just drank my coffee. And for the first time in two lifetimes, that was enough.Adrian appeared behind me. He poured himself a cup. He sat across from me."You're up early," he said."I slept."He looked at me. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.We drank in silence. The kitchen was warm. The city hummed outside. After a while, he said, "What do you want to do today?"I considered the question. • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Nineteen: The Vow

Adrian asked me to renew our vows on a Monday. Not with a grand gesture. Not with flowers or candles or a speech. He asked over breakfast, in the same tone he used to discuss the weather."I want to renew our vows," he said.I set down my coffee. "What?""I want to renew our vows. Not because anything's wrong. Not because I want to start over. Because I want to say it again. In front of the people who matter. Without a contract. Without a plan. Just us."I looked at him. He looked at me."When?""This weekend. If you want."I considered the question. I thought about the first wedding. The small chapel. The simple vows. The people who had stood beside us. I thought about everything that had come after. Everything we'd survived. Everything we'd built."Okay," I said.He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something warm."Good," he said.---The ceremony was even smaller than the first one.Just us. Just Daniel. Just Thomas. Just Beatriz. Just Felix. Just Sloane. A ha

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: The Peace

It came without warning. Not peace like a lightning strike. Not peace like a revelation. Just a morning when I woke up and nothing hurt. No tightness in my chest. No weight on my shoulders. No voice in the back of my head telling me I wasn't done yet.I lay in bed for a long time. The light came through the curtains. The city hummed outside. I listened to it. I didn't count the cracks. I didn't think about the past. I just lay there.Adrian was beside me. He was still asleep. His breathing was slow. Steady. I watched him for a while. The way his chest rose and fell. The way his hand lay open on the pillow between us. Close enough to touch. I didn't touch it. I didn't need to.I got up. I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island and drank it slowly. The city woke up around me. Cars. Lights. People. I watched it all through the window. It didn't feel like a threat. It didn't feel like something I had to survive. It just felt like a city. Like a place where people lived.

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Seventeen: The Visit

The prison was two hours north of the city.I drove alone. I didn't tell Adrian. I didn't tell Daniel. I just got in the car and drove. The same way I'd driven to the cemetery. The same way I'd driven to my father's cabin. The same way I'd driven to every difficult thing I'd ever had to face. The building was gray. Concrete. Windowless. The kind of place that was designed to make you feel small before you even walked through the door.I parked. I sat in the car for a long time. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just sat there. Then I got out.---The visiting room was large.Tables. Chairs. Vending machines. A guard by the door. Fluorescent lights that hummed. The kind of room where people spoke in low voices and tried not to cry.I sat at a table near the back. I waited.Mira walked in five minutes later. She looked different. Thinner. Paler. Her hair was pulled back. No makeup. No jewelry. Just a plain gray uniform and hands that wouldn't stop moving. She sat across from me. She di

The firm hit its first major milestone on a Wednesday.I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. Sarah came into my office that morning with a folder and a look on her face I hadn't seen before."We closed the Grayson case," she said.I set down my pen. "What?""The Grayson case. The man whose business partner disappeared. We found him. He's alive. He's in witness protection. He testified against the people who threatened him."I looked at her. She looked at me."We closed it.""We closed it."She set the folder on my desk. I opened it. The report. The evidence. The outcome. Everything we'd worked on for months. Everything we'd built.I closed the folder. I looked at the window. At the city. At the light."Good," I said.Sarah nodded. She didn't smile. But something in her expression shifted. Something lighter."We have six clients now," she said. "Three journalists. Two investigators. One family. We're growing."I looked at her. She looked at me."We're building something," I said."We a
