Chapter Fourteen

~ Elena ~

I didn't get any sleep. Not by any means.

As though it had its own pulse, the envelope burned against my skin where I had tucked it inside the clutch's lining. I was tense at every change in the wind outside and every creak of the penthouse. I kept playing back the words from the rooftop, wondering if I had just entered a trap or an alliance.

However, there was no doubt in my mind that I could no longer afford to hesitate. Alexander's suspicion tightened around me like a net, and if I didn't initiate contact first, I would eventually suffocate.

I was still sitting at the window at dawn, watching the city come to life. I carefully unfolded the envelope. One piece of paper. A name. A time. A warning. My breath caught, sharp and shallow.

Whoever gave me this….they weren’t bluffing.

I folded it again quickly and shoved it deep into the lining. My heart beat steady now, a different rhythm than fear—it was resolve.

Today, I would have to play better.

~ Elena ~I barely had a moment to collect myself from the first set of photos before Alexander came in again. This time, his voice was colder, sharper, slicing through the room.“There’s more,” he said, tossing another folder onto the desk. My stomach dropped as I saw the new set of images spill across the polished surface. And there he was.Not just me—me, vulnerable, asleep. And beside me… someone I recognized. Someone Alexander knew. Someone I at least had never suspected. My chest constricted. I wanted to throw myself at him, to explain… but Alexander didn’t wait for me.“This… this is impossible!” I gasped. “Alexander, it isn’t true! You have to believe me—”He didn’t.My blood ran cold when I saw the next picture of him lying next to me with his arms spread out as though we were... and the floor. It was impossible to ignore the evidence. Disbelief, pain, and finally rage flashed through Alexander's eyes. My heart nearly stopped when the man, who was Alexander's acquaintance, e

  • The Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Seventeen

~ Elena ~I didn't hear Alexander enter. Not until the penthouse was shattered like a whip by the click of the study door. He held a small stack of photographs and stood tall and unforgiving. His eyes burned into me, cold and piercing, but his face was unreadable. "What is this?" He spoke in a low, nearly controlled voice, but each word had impact. I went cold. My stomach turned over. In an attempt to calm the chaos inside of me, my hand automatically went to my chest. Alexander flung the pictures onto the desk. One, two, three... I was unable to count. And I was there. Not just me, but me exposed, defenseless, and devoid of all honor. Some of the pictures were too private and intimate. Some were blurry, but enough to hint at what Alexander would detest most. "No." I reached for them and whispered. "Alexander, this isn't—" He extended a hand. “Don't. Don't talk. Not just yet.” My chest tightened and my pulse thundered. Every picture made my insides twist like a knife. "How...

  • The Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Sixteen

Chapter Sixteen~ Elena ~After her performance at the table, Victoria stayed. She lingered, drinking coffee that had not been offered to her, her perfume settling into the air like unclean smoke. I excused myself first because I was out of breath. I was vibrating inside, but my steps were calm. I could sense Alexander's silence cutting deeper than words could, and that folder had been a carefully placed blade between us. I forced my lungs to fill, leaning against the wall for a moment in the hallway. I wished he hadn't taken her seriously. I wanted to think that the hand he raised to silence her was evidence that he still had some affection for me, if not allegiance. However, Alexander never raised his hand arbitrarily. He kept her quiet because he wanted to see me break without her interference. He wanted the evidence to do its work.I pushed off the wall, straightened, and told myself not to give either of them the satisfaction. When I stepped back toward our bedroom, Marcus app

  • The Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Fifteen

~ Elena ~Alexander was not softened by the morning sun. It made him more angular. He was already business-dressed when I walked into the dining room, his cufflinks gleaming in the sunlight, his eyes as icy as the steel of the skyline behind him. I was a king prepared for battle, but the battlefield was me. I waited for him to say something first. He didn't. The sound of his knife scraping against the plate was slow and deliberate, and it irritated my skin more than words could. The silence broke when I forced myself to take a sip of water, but it wasn't him. Victoria's voice purred from the doorway, "Good morning, Mrs. Drake." I jerked my head up. She appeared as though she was a part of our house, my home. Lips painted in, perfectly composed in a shade that mocked subtlety. I felt my pulse stutter, but I masked it with a calm smile.Alexander didn’t even look surprised.“I invited her,” he said, finally setting down his knife. His tone was cool, casual—too casual. “She came wit

I released a slow breath I hadn't realized I was holding the envelope as I slipped back into the elevator, clutched tight in my hand. As the car went down, the lights of the city flickered by, but I was not thinking about the streets below. My mind replayed every word the figure had said on the rooftop, each one like a puzzle piece I needed to put together. The sharp edge of anticipation persisted even though my pulse had calmed into a steady rhythm by the time I got to my floor. I moved stealthily into the hallway, keeping Marcus and other people out of my line of sight. The penthouse was dark, with the table lamps' gentle glow serving as the only source of light. Everything appeared serene, almost at ease. A deceptive calm.I moved into the bedroom and closed the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment as if to gather the weight of what had just happened. The envelope was still in my hand. I placed it on the bed and sat down, fingers brushing over the seal. My heart beat fa
