MasukThe final bell rang sharply and the school corridors instantly filled with noises and footsteps. Lockers slammed shuts, laughter echoed around the surrounding. The late afternoon sun washed the corridors where students started walking in pace.
Near the front gate, Lily Hughes stood surrounded by a group of girls. She looked effortlessly beautiful, even in the plain school uniform. Her long black hairs fell in soft curls, shining under the sunlight, her posture remained graceful without even trying. She had the kind of beauty that drew attention naturally- striking sharp features, almost like someone who belonged on magazine covers. Students greeted her as they passed through her, some smiling shyly, while the others whispering after getting far. She was really someone, once seen you can't ignore.
"Lily, are you waiting again?" One girl teased.
Lily smiled, trying to hide it.
"May be," she said softly.
"You say the same every day."
"And every day he shows up," another added with a grin.
Lily lowered her eyes slightly, a faint blush appearing. She didn't deny it. He always come.
Not far from them, under the shade of a mango tree, Elara stood quietly with her best friend, Suzanne, who was her only friend. Unlike Lily, she blended into the background easily. She was simple- her hair tied loosely, her expression soft, her presence calm. She wasn't strikingly beautiful like Lily, but there was a simple and unique prettiness about her - someone understated and easy to miss unless someone looked closely.
Suzanne nudged her lightly. "You are going home right away?"
Elara nodded. "Yes...like always."
Her friend followed her gaze toward Lily's group. "She is waiting for him again."
Elara didn't answer because she already knew.
Just then, the low hum of an engine rolled into the front gate.
It was him again.
Heads started turning towards him.
A sleek black luxury Jaguar car pulled into the school driveway smoothly. The people communicating with each other slowed, and whispers started spreading instantly.
"That's Charlie Brown."
"He came again."
"He is so handsome,"
"Lily is so lucky."
The car came to a stop, and Charlie stepped down.
He looked older than everyone there - taller, composed and confident. His presence drew attention. He was wearing a white shirt with black jeans. He adjusted his sleeves slightly, scanning the crowds, and the moment he spotted Lily his expression softened.
Lily's face lit up.
She stepped forward. "You are here."
"I told you I might come," he said, he was calm but confident.
"You are late," she teased.
"I am two minutes early."
"That's still counts."
He gave a faint smile.
Their conversation felt natural, easy like they existed in their own spaces.
From a distance, Elara watched silently. Her friend, Suzanne, noticed the way her fingers tightened around her books.
"You don’t have to stand here," she said softly.
But Elara didn't move.
Lily glanced past Charlie and noticed her.
"Oh... sister," she called gently. "You are still here?"
Charlie followed her gaze, His eyes met Elara's briefly.
"Hello, Elara," he said politely.
"...Hello."
The distance in his tone was unmistakable.
Lily looked between them, then smiled. "She's going home too. Can we drop her?"
Charlie nodded without hesitation. "Of Course."
Elara's friend gave her a small smile. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Elara nodded and walked through the car quietly taking brief steps.
Charlie opened the passenger door for Lily. She stepped in gracefully, thanking him softly. The gesture didn't go unnoticed by the students still watching.
Elara slipped into the back seat, closing the door gently behind her.
The engine groove, and the car moved forward.
For a moment, silence filled the space, then Lily leaned slightly toward him.
"You didn't tell me you were coming today."
"I was nearby."
"You are always nearby."
"Maybe."
She smiled, pleased.
From the back seat, Elara watched them through the spaces between the seats. Their shoulders were so close almost touching, their voices low and comfortable. She felt like a third wheel, a listener.
"Did you eat?" Charlie asked.
"I didn't like the cafeteria food."
"You skipped again?"
"Maybe."
He reached into the console and pulled a small packet of snack. "Eat this."
Lily's eyes brightened. "You brought this for me?"
"You said you liked it last time."
She nodded at him, smiling slightly. "You remembered everything."
Charlie didn't reply, but the faint warmth in his expression said enough.
Elara turned her gaze toward the window, her reflection faintly visible in the glass.
Lily laughed suddenly."You look a bit serious."
"Do I?"
"Yes." She leaned closer and adjusted his collar playfully. "Relax."
He didn't stop her nor moved away.
Elara's fingers tightened slighted in her lap. Their closeness felt suffocated for her like always.
"Are you cold?" He asked Lily, noticing her rubbing her arms.
"A little."
He adjusted the air conditioning immediately. "Better?"
She nodded.
Not even any of them looked at her as if she was invisible for them.
The conversation flowed between them softly, with a small laughter, and small comfortable silences. Lily leaned toward him when she spoke, and he listened patiently and occasionally smiling.
Behind them, Elara sat quietly. Close enough to hear every word and far enough to feel invisible.
Students, buildings and trees blurred outside the window as the car moved in speed. She watched the passing scenery, her chest tight with something she didn't want to name.
Charlie laughed softly at something Lily said.
And Elara realized... he hadn't laughed like that around her in years.
She immediately lowered her gaze, her heart already heavy with the scene of them.
She had once walked through fire for him but now, she sat just a few feet away....
And he didn't even notice she was there...
The Gala was just few days away It was Friday morning and the entire committee members had been called up for promotional photographs. The school administration had suddenly decided that promotional photographs were necessary for advertisements, sponsorship presentations, social media posts, and what the principal enthusiastically referred to as “community engagement.” Most students simply called it unnecessary suffering. The complaint had begun the moment the announcement appeared in the committee group chat. It only grew louder when everyone was informed that attendance was mandatory. Elara stared at the message on her phone while walking toward campus. Photographs. Wonderful. As if being visible wasn’t already difficult enough. She slipped her phone into her bag and continued walking. The morning air was cool, carrying the first hints of winter. Normally she enjoyed mornings like this. Quiet. Predictable. But lately her thoughts refused to stay quiet. They kept drifting
The entire committee was exhausted when Thursday arrived. From here, the Winter Gala was only two weeks away and, the whole atmosphere was tensed. The work load was too much. Everyone had got serious even Suzzane wasn't complaining which perhaps was the clearest sign that everyone was suffering. The committee room buzzed with tired student's who worked through their final responsibilities. Paper work covered the whole tables and the laptops glowed beneath the fluorescent lights. Everywhere was a mess with paper, half drinked juices, markers, books and what not. It was already evening and darkness had already begun to spread in the campus and due to which most of the students had gone home hours ago. The atmosphere was silent but tensed. Only the committee members stayed in the campus for completing unfinished work.Unfortunately.Elara sat near the far end of the room with three different spreadsheets spread across the table before her. She was holding a marker to encircle some impo
It been three days after the sponsorship crisis. Presently, Lily found herself standing outside the Brown residence on a bright Saturday afternoon, holding a small box of pastries which Fiona had specifically requested from her favorite bakery. It was a school holiday. The weather was pleasant. The garden surrounding the house was in full bloom. Everything looked exactly as it always had. Yet, for reasons couldn’t be explained, Lily felt restless. She felt something unsettled inside her chest. It wasn’t like she had been unhappy; but she did not feel peace. It had been happening more often lately. when she thoughts about those little moments, her mind drifted somewhere she didn’t want them to go. she found herself replaying conversations long after they had ended. And unexpectedly, a name appeared in her mind. Elara. Lily frowned slightly as she walked toward the front door. The feeling made no sense. She never dislike Elara before. Even when they were children, she
Suddenly, the solution seemed almost obvious as if walking from the front itself. It looked like a miracle. The conference room door opened.Everyone turned their head toward him. Charlie Brown stepped inside. A smile lingered on Elara's face now. How fortunate was God's timing? When it closed all doors, there is still one window opened, which means when life tests you with obstacles, it still gives you enough patience to get through that.He looked dashing like always and seemed to come just from his office. A folder rested beneath one arm while his car keys dangled loosely from his hand. He seems to be in a hurry. He had been busy lately because of office work. He had come to pick up Lily like his usual routine. He texted and called Lily, but when she didn't answer, he came inside because already he was late and had no time to wait. And nothing more.Yet even his arrival shifted the room slightly. Everyone felt his presence. He had that charm to attract everyone towards him. Se
It been three weeks before the Winter Gala, the committee room looked as though it had survived a small disaster. All preparations were going smoothly back then when suddenly everything started disorganizing. Some Papers covered every inch of the long conference table. The empty coffee cups sat abandoned beside laptops. The colored sticky notes decorated the whiteboard in desperate patterns denoting all the deadlines, scheduling and important timelines. Half-completed seating charts were pinned to walls.Everyone looked tired.Even the teachers. The excitement that had filled the first few meetings had completely disappeared. Now there were only deadlines. And unfortunately, deadlines seemed to be multiplying.Elara sat quietly near the center of the room with a sponsorship folder open in front of her. A pencil rested between her fingers as she reviewed confirmation documents one final time.Around her, students worked through various responsibilities. Some discussed guest invitatio
The Tuesday morning at the school were usually predictable. The hallways were chaotic with the noises of students while they were walking in lines. It was the assembly day before classes start. For them, it was the most boring day of the week because no one liked hearing the principal, but it was a ritual needed to be performed. Nothing felt unusual about this morning too. It was just like another Tuesday morning at school. Noone suggested it would become one of the rare days Elara would remember long afterward. A special day for her. She sat beside Suzanne in the auditorium while the principal prepared for the weekly assembly. Around them, other students started chatting their own while some others payed attention. Elara was paying attention while Suzzane certainly wasn't. She was busy in her own thoughts. Suzzane popped her chin against her palm and, stared toward the stage with the expression of someone enduring a personal tragedy.“If he starts talking about attendance percen
