The scent of white roses filled the bridal suite, but instead of calming Ava Carter's nerves, it only made the room feel suffocating.
Outside, the soft melody of a violin drifted through the half-open window, reminding her that in less than thirty minutes, she would walk down the aisle and marry the man she had loved for four years. It was supposed to be the happiest day of her life—the day every little girl dreamed about. Yet something didn't feel right. She stared at her reflection in the full-length mirror. The elegant satin gown hugged her figure perfectly, its long train pooling across the polished wooden floor. Her makeup was flawless, her dark curls rested neatly beneath a delicate veil, and the diamond necklace around her neck had belonged to her late mother. "You'd be so proud of me today, Mom," she whispered, brushing her fingers over the necklace. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. "Come in," she called, expecting the makeup artist or the wedding coordinator. Instead, her stepsister, Chloe, stepped inside wearing a champagne-colored bridesmaid dress. Her smile was as bright as ever, but there was something strange about it—something Ava couldn't quite place. "You look beautiful," Chloe said, closing the door behind her. "Thank you." "I can't believe you're finally marrying Daniel." Ava smiled shyly. "Neither can I." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Then Chloe walked over and hugged her tightly. So tight that Ava laughed. I can't breathe." "Sorry," Chloe giggled as she pulled away. "I'm just happy for you." But when Chloe turned toward the door, Ava noticed something lying on the floor near the dressing table. A man's wristwatch, Expensive, Familiar. She frowned. "Chloe..." Her stepsister stopped. "Isn't this Daniel's watch?" Chloe looked down, and for the briefest second, her face lost all color. Then she forced a laugh. "Oh... he must've dropped it when he came looking for you earlier." Ava frowned. "Daniel was here?" "Only for a minute." "He wanted to see you before the ceremony." "That's strange." Daniel had promised they wouldn't see each other before the wedding. He'd said it was bad luck. Before Ava could think more about it, Chloe quickly picked up the watch and slipped it into her handbag. "I'll give it back to him." "Okay." As Chloe left the room, Ava couldn't shake the uneasy feeling settling in her chest. Maybe it was just wedding nerves. It had to be. Ten minutes later, Ava decided to look for Daniel herself. She wanted one last hug before everything changed. The hotel corridors were almost empty, most guests already seated inside the ballroom. She smiled to herself as she imagined their honeymoon, their first home together, the children they'd once talked about late at night. She reached the groom's private suite and knocked gently. No answer. She raised her hand to knock again when she heard something. A woman's laughter. Followed by a man's voice. Daniel. Ava smiled. "So he's with his best man." She was about to leave when another sound stopped her. A soft moan. Then Daniel laughed. "You're impossible." Her smile faded. A cold feeling crept up her spine. The door wasn't completely closed. It had been left slightly open. She shouldn't look. Every instinct told her to walk away. Instead, she pushed the door open just enough to see inside. The world stopped. Daniel stood near the window with his back against the wall. His tuxedo jacket had been thrown onto a chair. His tie hung loosely around his neck. And wrapped around him... ...was Chloe. His hands rested on her waist as he kissed her like she was the only woman in the world. Ava couldn't breathe. Her bouquet slipped from her trembling fingers and landed on the floor with a dull thud. The sound made them freeze. Daniel turned. The color drained from his face. "Ava..." Chloe stepped away from him, hurriedly smoothing her dress, but there wasn't an ounce of shame in her expression. Only annoyance at being caught. For several seconds, no one spoke. Ava stared at the two people she trusted most. She wanted to scream. To cry. To wake up from what had to be a nightmare. Instead, she heard herself ask in a voice so quiet it barely sounded like her own, "How long?" Daniel rubbed the back of his neck. "It isn't what you think." A broken laugh escaped her lips. "Really?" "Because it looks exactly like what I think." He stepped toward her. "Please, let me explain." She took a step back. "Don't." Chloe folded her arms. "Since she already knows, there's no point hiding it anymore." Daniel closed his eyes. "Chloe..." "No." She walked forward confidently until she stood beside him. "I'm tired of pretending." Then she looked Ava straight in the eye. "We've been together for almost a year." The words struck harder than a slap. Almost a year. While Ava had been choosing wedding flowers... He had been choosing another woman. While she had been planning their future... They had been sharing secrets behind her back. Tears blurred her vision, but she refused to let them fall. She would not cry in front of them. Not today. Daniel reached for her hand. "I never wanted you to find out like this." Ava looked down at the hand reaching for hers. The same hand that had just been touching Chloe. Slowly, she lifted her eyes to meet his. "When were you planning to tell me?" His silence answered everything. She nodded once. Then turned and walked away. Behind her, Daniel called her name. She didn't stop. She couldn't. Because if she did... She wasn't sure she'd have the strength to leave. The gates of the Hayes estate stood open. For the first time in years, Ava was looking at the house that had once been her entire world. The tall iron gates. The overgrown garden. The stone fountain in the center of the courtyard.Everything looked almost exactly the same.Except now she knew the house had been hiding secrets beneath its walls.Secrets about her.Secrets about her family. And possibly the truth about her birth.Ava stepped out of the car.Daniel immediately followed."You should stay here," he said. She looked at him."Absolutely not.""You've been through enough.""So have you.""Ava—""Whatever is beneath that fountain concerns me."Daniel sighed."I knew you were going to say that."She gave him a small smile."Then stop arguing with me."Adrian stepped out of the car."I agree with her."Daniel looked at him."Of course you do."Adrian shrugged."She's my sister."Ava's heart warmed at the word.Sister.It still felt strange. But it also felt right. She turned tow
Ava stopped breathing. Her father's gun was pointed directly at Daniel. For a few seconds, nobody moved.Nobody spoke. The only sound was the distant crackling of the burning house behind them.Ava stared at the man who had once been her hero. Her father. The man she had spent years believing was dead. The man who had just admitted that her life had been promised to the Black Rose before she was even born. And now he was being forced to choose between her and Daniel."Dad..."Her father's hand trembled."Ava, move.""No.""Ava, please.""You said you wanted to protect me.""I do.""Then put the gun down."The chairman laughed."Don't be foolish."Ava looked at him."You've been controlling my family for years."The chairman smiled."And now I'm controlling you."Daniel stepped forward."Don't listen to him."Ava immediately grabbed Daniel's arm."Don't."He looked at her.His eyes were strangely calm."If he has to shoot someone, let it be me."Ava's eyes widened."No.""Ava.""No!"S
Ava couldn't breathe. The name echoed through her mind.Victoria Hayes.Daniel's mother. The woman she had been taught to fear. The woman who had supposedly disappeared. The woman standing before her now, looking at Ava as though she had every right to call her daughter.Ava slowly shook her head."No."Victoria smiled."You've always been stubborn."Ava's eyes widened. That voice. That familiar softness hidden beneath the coldness.A memory flashed through her mind.A little girl sitting on a bed.A woman's fingers running through her hair.A lullaby."Sleep, my little Ava..."Ava's breath caught. She stepped backward."No."Victoria took a step toward her."Come here.""Don't!"Ava raised her hand.Everyone went silent."You don't get to say that."Victoria's smile faded.Ava's voice trembled."You don't get to stand there and call me your daughter after everything you've done."Victoria glanced at Daniel."He hasn't told you.""Told me what?"Victoria smiled again."Ask him."Ava t
Ava couldn't move. Her father's eyes were fixed on hers.Five years.Five years of believing he was dead.Five years of crying over a grave that had never held his body.Five years of wondering why he had abandoned her.And now he was standing only a few meters away.Alive.Watching her.Smiling.Ava's lips parted."Dad..."The word barely escaped her mouth. Her father looked at her for several seconds. Then he smiled."My little girl."Ava's eyes filled with tears. She took one step forward. Then another. But Daniel's captor pressed the gun harder against his head."Stay where you are."Ava stopped. Her father's smile disappeared."Don't hurt him."The man holding Daniel looked at him."That's up to your father."Ava looked at the man she had spent her childhood worshipping."Let him go."Her father shook his head."Not yet.""Why?""Because I need you to listen."Ava laughed bitterly."Listen?"She wiped her tears."After everything you've done?"His expression hardened."You don't
The gunshot tore through the room. Ava screamed."Mom!" Elena stumbled backward. For one terrifying second, Ava was certain she had been shot. Then she realized something. There was no blood. The man holding the gun stared at his weapon in confusion.Daniel had thrown a piece of debris at his arm just before he pulled the trigger. The bullet had struck the ceiling."Run!" Daniel shouted.Ava grabbed Elena's hand."Come on!"They tried to move, but Daniel was still trapped beneath the fallen beam."Go!"Ava shook her head."I'm not leaving you!"The man raised his gun again. This time, he aimed directly at Daniel.Ava's heart stopped."No!"She stepped in front of Daniel. The man's expression hardened."Move.""No.""Ava!"Daniel's voice was desperate."Get behind me.""I won't."The man laughed."You're willing to die for him?"Ava stared at him."Yes."Something changed in the man's expression.Almost admiration."Interesting."He slowly lowered the gun."Now I understand why Daniel
Ava stared at the photograph. She couldn't speak. The woman in the picture stood beside her father, smiling at the camera as though the world had never given her a reason to be afraid. She was beautiful. Dark hair. Soft features. The same eyes Ava had seen every morning when she looked into the mirror. Her mother.Or at least, the woman everyone had told her was dead.Ava slowly looked at Daniel."You're sure?"Daniel didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the photograph."Daniel."He finally nodded."Yes.""How?""My father showed me her photograph years ago."Ava's fingers trembled."You knew what she looked like?""Yes.""And you never told me?""I didn't know the truth.""You knew enough."Daniel looked at her."I knew your father had been protecting a secret. I didn't know that woman was your mother."Ava looked back at the photograph."Then why did you say she's dead?"Daniel's jaw tightened."Because that's what I was told.""By who?"He hesitated."My mother."A
