Ava didn't remember how she made it out of the hotel.

The world around her had dissolved into a blur of white marble floors, expensive floral arrangements, and sympathetic faces that seemed to follow her wherever she went. Somewhere behind her, Daniel was still calling her name, but every step she took drowned out his voice. If she stopped now, if she turned around even once, she knew she would crumble. She had spent four years loving a man who had looked her in the eyes every single day while betraying her behind her back. There was nothing left to hear.

Outside, the afternoon sky had turned gray, and a cool breeze lifted the edge of her veil as she stumbled down the grand staircase leading to the hotel entrance. Guests arriving for the ceremony paused to stare at the bride rushing away with tears running silently down her face. Some whispered. Others reached for their phones. By evening, the story would be all over social media.

"Bride runs away before wedding."

They would never know the truth.

Ava hugged herself tightly, trying to stop the trembling that had taken over her body. The engagement ring on her finger suddenly felt unbearably heavy. It was no longer a symbol of love. It was proof that she had been fooled.

With shaking hands, she pulled it off.

For a moment, she simply stared at the diamond sparkling in her palm. Daniel had slipped it onto her finger beneath a sky full of fireworks, promising to love her forever. She remembered how she'd cried that night, convinced she was the luckiest woman alive.

How foolish she had been.

Without another thought, she threw the ring into the decorative fountain outside the hotel. It disappeared beneath the water with a tiny splash, and somehow, watching it sink gave her a strange sense of relief.

"It's rare to see someone throw away a ring worth two hundred thousand dollars."

The deep male voice startled her.

She turned sharply.

A man stood a few feet away beneath the hotel canopy, one hand tucked casually into the pocket of a perfectly tailored black suit. Rain had begun to fall, but none of it seemed to touch him. He carried himself with quiet confidence, his sharp features impossible to ignore. His gray eyes rested on her with calm curiosity rather than pity, and somehow that made him even more intimidating.

"I'm sorry," Ava murmured, quickly wiping her cheeks. "I didn't realize anyone was there."

"I noticed."

His gaze drifted briefly toward the fountain before returning to her. "You looked like you were saying goodbye to more than a ring."

His words struck something deep inside her.

A bitter smile tugged at her lips. "I was saying goodbye to four years of my life."

For a second, neither of them spoke. The rain grew heavier, drumming softly against the hotel's glass entrance. Instead of leaving, the stranger removed his jacket and held it out to her.

"You'll catch a cold."

Ava blinked in surprise. "You'll be cold."

"I'll survive."

She hesitated before accepting it. The jacket was still warm from his body and carried a faint scent of cedarwood and expensive cologne. Wrapping it around herself felt oddly comforting, though she couldn't explain why.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

He studied her for another moment before asking quietly, "Do you always wear a wedding dress when you end relationships?"

Despite everything, a small laugh escaped her lips.

"I was supposed to get married in..." She glanced at the large clock above the entrance. "...twenty minutes."

His eyebrows lifted ever so slightly.

"So the groom made a mistake."

"You could call it that."

"He left you?"

She shook her head.

"I found him kissing my stepsister."

There was no dramatic gasp or exaggerated sympathy from the stranger. He simply looked at her for a long second before saying, "Then he didn't deserve to marry you."

The simplicity of those words nearly broke her.

Everyone else would have offered empty comfort or told her everything happened for a reason. This man didn't. He merely stated a fact, as though there was no room for debate.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

A sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the curb just then. A middle-aged man in a navy suit hurried toward them and lowered his head respectfully.

"Mr. Kingsley, the board meeting begins in thirty minutes. They're already waiting."

Ava froze.

Kingsley.

Surely not...

The stranger sighed almost imperceptibly before looking back at her.

"I should go."

Before she could stop herself, she asked, "You're Adrian Kingsley?"

A faint smile touched his lips.

"So you've heard of me."

Everyone had.

At twenty-nine, Adrian Kingsley wasn't just one of the youngest billionaires in the country—he was the CEO of Kingsley Holdings, a business empire that stretched across real estate, technology, hotels, and finance. Newspapers called him ruthless. Business magazines called him a genius. Social media called him the most eligible bachelor in America.

And somehow, she had been standing here crying in front of him.

Heat rushed to her cheeks.

"I... I'm sorry. You probably think I'm pathetic."

"I think," Adrian replied calmly, "that today has been unfair to you."

Before Ava could answer, loud voices erupted from the hotel entrance.

"There she is!"

Daniel.

He came running down the steps, his tuxedo wrinkled, his tie hanging loose, panic written all over his face.

"Ava, please listen to me."

She instinctively stepped back.

"I've heard enough."

"No, you haven't."

He reached for her wrist, but Adrian moved first.

With one smooth step, he placed himself between them.

His expression remained calm, yet something about him made Daniel stop immediately.

"She said she's heard enough," Adrian said evenly. "You should respect that."

Daniel frowned. "This is between me and my fiancée."

Adrian's eyes didn't leave his.

"I don't think she agrees."

Daniel finally recognized him.

His confidence faltered.

"Mr. Kingsley... I didn't realize..."

"Clearly."

Rain continued to pour around them, but neither man moved.

Daniel looked past Adrian toward Ava, desperation replacing his earlier arrogance.

"I made a mistake. It didn't mean anything."

Ava stared at him in disbelief.

"A year," she whispered. "You cheated on me for a year, and you're calling it a mistake?"

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came.

Ava drew a slow, shaky breath. Then she did something she never imagined herself doing.

She slipped her hand into Adrian's.

His eyes flickered down to their joined hands before meeting hers again.

She could feel the warmth of his fingers around hers, steady and reassuring.

Looking directly at Daniel, she forced herself to speak without trembling.

"It's over."

Daniel's face drained of color.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

She tightened her grip on Adrian's hand.

"And next time you see me..."

Her voice was quiet, but unwavering.

"...don't call me your fiancée."

For the first time since meeting her, Adrian's thumb brushed lightly across the back of her hand—a small gesture, almost unnoticeable, yet enough to make her heart skip unexpectedly.

Then he looked at Daniel and said five words that left everyone speechless.

"She's leaving with me."
