Bella's POV

Two weeks later...

I sat on the edge of the bed, cradling Rose in my arms. She was only two weeks old, yet she carried every secret I had wrapped my life around. Her tiny fingers gripped mine, delicate but stubborn, and for a fleeting moment, I almost allowed myself to smile. Almost.

But then, the sharp ring of my phone on the nightstand shattered the peace. My heart slammed against my ribs. It was Cole calling. I froze, staring at the screen as though the name itself could burn me to ashes. For the past weeks that I've been here, I've been avoiding Cole... and especially, this moment. I buried myself in text replies and carefully prepared excuses. But I couldn't avoid him forever. He was my husband, and unlike Eric, Cole didn't let things slide into silence. He pursued, pressed, and loved too thoroughly.

I turned to Martha, who was cleaning up my room. "Take her," I whispered quickly, thrusting Rose into Martha's waiting arms.
