The pressure of his lips against hers wasn't content with just grazing the surface, it wanted more, moving with a quiet insistence that sent a sudden flash of memory tearing through Vivian's mind. A hotel room. Darkness. Two people tangled together in desperation.

She shoved him back.

"Mr. Hartwell." Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "What do you think you're doing?"

There was nowhere to retreat. Her back was already against the door, and he hadn't moved far, just enough. His cologne drifted into the space between them, warm and clean and entirely too present to ignore.

Ethan looked down at her. Her face was flushed, her breathing uneven, her eyes very wide and very direct. He was certain of one thing, the splitting tension that had been building behind his temples since morning had vanished the exact moment his lips touched hers.

Gone. Completely.

He held her gaze and said, with perfect composure, "If I told you I mistook you for someone else, would you believe me?"

The question landed in the silence between them.

Vivian stared at him.

His eyes were completely steady. Completely unreadable. The eyes of a man who could say anything and make it sound like a statement of fact.

She did not believe him for a single second.

But she also couldn't, in good conscience or good sense, stand here and tell Ethan Hartwell to his face that she thought he had kissed her on purpose. The women of New York would collectively laugh her out of the city.

She shifted, trying to free her wrist from his grip. "It's, it's fine, Mr. Hartwell. Don't worry about it."

Ethan held her wrist one moment longer, just one, then released it with unhurried grace.

"Who were you looking for?" he asked.

The pivot was so smooth, so utterly natural, that Vivian's train of thought genuinely derailed before she caught herself.

She blinked. "Dr. Reid."

"Cameron Reid?"

"You know him?" She just wanted to pay and leave. "Do you know where he is?"

"Family friends." Ethan slid both hands into his coat pockets, expression unchanged. "He was called to the dean's office just now. He mentioned your treatment f*e to me in passing, I've already settled it."

Inside the supply closet across the room, pressed against the back wall with the door cracked exactly one centimeter, Cameron Reid listened to Ethan Hartwell calmly describe him as a man who would chase a patient down over a modest hospital bill.

His eye twitched.

He wanted very badly to burst out of the closet.

He did not burst out of the closet.

Because thirty seconds ago he had witnessed, with his own two eyes, through this exact crack, Ethan Hartwell pull a woman against the door and kiss her.

Initiate a kiss.

A forced kiss.

On a woman who was clearly not thrilled about it.

Cameron pressed a fist to his mouth and stared at the ceiling of the closet.

This was the single most historic event he had witnessed in eleven years of friendship.

"Since you're here," Ethan said, turning from the window, "I'll take you back."

Vivian opened her mouth.

"I happened to hear you studied traditional medicine abroad." He continued before she could speak, his tone conversational, unhurried, leaving no natural gap for refusal. "I have someone I'd like you to look at. It's a child, it isn't convenient for me to bring him out."

Vivian's mouth closed.

She looked up at him sharply.

A child.

The word moved through her like a current.

Could it be

"He's very lovable." Ethan was already moving toward the door, coat in hand, as though her agreement was a formality they were both politely observing. "I appreciate it in advance, Miss Rong."

Vivian stood in the middle of the office.

She had not agreed.

She had not been given a functional opportunity to disagree.

She picked up her bag and followed.

The closet door eased open approximately four seconds after their footsteps faded down the corridor. Cameron Reid emerged in stages, first one hand on the frame, then his head, then the rest of him and stood blinking in the now-empty office, watching the distant figures disappear around the corner.

He pulled out his phone with trembling fingers and started dialing.

Because someone needed to hear this. Immediately.

Lure her to the hospital. Forced kiss. Claim mistaken identity. Smoothly redirect. Settle her bill without being asked. Manufacture a reason to take her home. Deploy the child.

The entire sequence had unfolded in under ten minutes, seamless and entirely without detectable effort, like a man running a masterclass he hadn't announced.

Cameron shook his head slowly.

Who had ever said Ethan Hartwell didn't know how to pursue a woman?

From this day forward, Cameron was his dad.

Vivian pressed her lips to Rosie's soft cheek and raised her right hand with solemn ceremony."Never," she said firmly. "I have never once thought about leaving you. Every single day this week I've been figuring out how to get to you." She pulled back just enough to look at the small, tear-streaked face. "And haven't I come? I'm here, aren't I?"Rosie considered this from within the circle of her arms, sniffling quietly. The familiar warmth of his mother's embrace, the particular scent of her, clean and natural and entirely safe, worked its way through the week's worth of accumulated worry and loneliness and slowly, gradually, began to loosen the knot in the small chest. His breathing evened out.His rigid little shoulders dropped by degrees."Mom." His voice was very small now. "I want to go home."There was a beautiful room here, with Little Prince murals and star-painted ceilings and a grandmother who would move mountains for him. There was a father now, tall and quiet, who had tie

The small figure on the bed stirred at the sound of their voices."Rosie, are you asleep?"The moment Vivian said the name, the little figure exploded off the mattress like a spring that had been compressed for exactly one week too long. She spun around, sat up straight, and fixed two enormous, perfectly round eyes directly on Vivian's face.Mom!!He was the most beautiful thing Vivian had seen in seven days.Rosie in his tiger pajamas, hair slightly mussed from lying down, little face flushed and stunned and blazing with recognition, like a tiny prince from a storybook who had just spotted the one person he'd been searching for across the entire kingdom.Vivian's lips curved into the widest, most helpless smile she'd worn in a week. She tilted her head and asked softly, "Can I call you Rosie?"MomEvery instinct in Rosie's small body launched her forward, arms already reaching, heart already there. And then his eyes landed on the tall figure standing beside Vivian.he stopped.Plante

Victoria's smile widened as she beckoned Vivian forward with the warmth of a woman who had been waiting for exactly this kind of moment for years."Come in, come in, don't be shy, sweetheart. Come sit down." She patted the cushion beside her on the sofa. "I'll have someone bring fruit. What do you like? We have everything, just say the word.""Oh.. I" Vivian hadn't braced for this level of enthusiasm. She threw a sideways glance at the man beside her that said, quite clearly, help.Ethan received the distress signal and stepped smoothly forward."Mom." His voice was easy, unhurried. "Vivian is a traditional medicine practitioner. She studied acupuncture abroad, she's highly experienced in the field. I brought her here to take a look at Rosie. A TCM perspective might offer something the other specialists haven't." He glanced toward the staircase. "Where is he?"The effect on Victoria was immediate. The effusive hostess energy shifted, still warm, but now sharpened with genuine focus, t

The Hartwell Family Estate.Rosie had been quiet ever since they got home. He'd gone straight to his room the moment they walked through the door, no requests for snacks, no cartoons, no asking Grandma to read to him. Just small, careful footsteps up the stairs and the soft click of his bedroom door. The family's longtime housekeeper, Nanny Chen, watched the little figure disappear down the hallway and turned to Victoria with a worried crease between her brows."Ma'am, what happened? The young master seems so down. He was perfectly happy this morning."Victoria sighed, settling onto the sitting room sofa with the weight of someone who had been turning the same question over in her mind for the past hour. "I honestly don't know. One moment we were looking at clothes, he was laughing and pointing at everything, and then suddenly he was gone. Bolted out of the boutique like something had caught fire." She shook her head. "By the time I caught up to him outside, he'd already stopped. Just

The man sitting across from Cameron was tall and still, one leg crossed over the other, a small magnetic therapy device pressed to his temple. His eyes were closed. His features, in repose, were the kind that made the air around them feel different, sharper, somehow, as though the room had rearranged itself around him without being asked.Even with his eyes shut, the authority radiating off Ethan Hartwell was enough to fill the entire office.Cameron, who had been ignored for the past four minutes, was undeterred."Okay so, you called me at the crack of dawn," he said, circling the chair slowly, "asked me to arrange treatment, made me abandon my morning plans, and then asked me how to get a girl's attention." He stopped. Tilted his head. "And now you've had me lure her here. Which means yesterday, when you told me nothing happened between you two" He pointed. "That was a lie."Silence."Ethan." Cameron's eyes went wide. "Did you actually"The woman had been in a car accident. Not seri
