The hospital stank of antiseptic and fear.

For four hours, I had been sitting in a hard plastic chair outside the surgical wing. Alexander's blood had dried into my palms and shirt, cracking and crumbling every time I clenched my fists.

My phone was a live grenade in my pocket, the damning email screenshots still burning behind my eyelids.

With every swing of the double doors, my heart leaped into my throat.

Finally a surgeon with scrubs around his neck came through, the mask halfway down his

  • The Billionaire's Secret Ward   Chapter 15

The penthouse was plunged into darkness, swallowing the city view whole. My heart thudded against my ribs as the elevator doors dinged and hissed open in the black. I couldn't see Alexander, but the oppressive heat and tension emanating from him radiated a wall against my side."Stay behind me," he ordered, his voice low and lethal, a stark contrast to the fresh wound on his abdomen.I ignored him, reaching out for a knife from the dinner table. My hands were still sticky from the pasta and a sickening cocktail of fear. After all the shooting, the kiss, the video, Victor's message-I was done being sheltered.A soft footfall echoed from the direction of the elevator. Then another. Alexander's hand found my wrist in the dark, squeezing hard. I yanked it free, ducking sideways and using the marble island as cover.Emergency lights flickered on, bathing the room in a blood-red hue. Standing by the elevator were three masked figures with guns. They looked professional."Mr. Sterling," one

  • The Billionaire's Secret Ward   Chapter 14

Alexander's POV The pain in my side was a dull throb, but nothing compared to the war waging in my chest. Three days after the shooting, the doctors had finally deemed me well enough to return to the hospital wing of my own building. I was healing faster than the physicians anticipated – mostly because I refused to stay down. I wasn’t in a position to afford weakness right now. Not with Victor circling like a blood-scented shark. Not with Noah Kane living under my roof. I stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, watching the city lights flicker on. The sling was gone, but I still moved cautiously, each breath a dull pull on the stitches; each movement a reminder of how close I’d come to bleeding out in that warehouse. The true wound, however, was the look in Noah’s eyes since he’d seen that video. Betrayal. Anger. And a hot burn that neither of us wanted to name. The kitchen was filled with the scent of garlic and herbs. The housekeeper had already been sent home

My phone was a live grenade in my pocket, the damning email screenshots still burning behind my eyelids. With every swing of the double doors, my heart leaped into my throat. Finally a surgeon with scrubs around his neck came through, the mask halfway down his face. He looked bone-weary. “Mr. Kane?” I jumped to my feet. “How is he?” “The bullet did some serious damage but missed the main arteries. We repaired a lacerated liver and stopped internal bleeding. He’s stable for now but lost a lot of blood. He’s in recovery now. You can see him for a few minutes.” I followed the surgeon down the sterile hallway, my legs like lead. Alexander was in a private room with monitors hooked up to every part of his body. Tubes were attached to his arms. His stro

Noah’s POVThe footsteps grew louder with every passing second. I pressed harder against the bleeding wound in Alexander’s side, my hands slick with warm blood. His body was heavy against mine, his breathing shallow and ragged.“Stay with me,” I whispered fiercely, voice cracking. “You don’t get to die after kissing me like that, you bastard.”His eyelids fluttered but didn’t open. The warehouse door creaked again. I grabbed Alexander’s gun from the floor with one bloody hand, pointing it toward the sound with shaking fingers. I had no idea how to use it properly, but I’d seen enough movies to know how to point and pull the trigger. It was simple enough. Two figures appeared in the dim emergency lighting.I tensed, finger tightening on the trigger.“Don’t shoot!” a familiar voice barked. “It’s us!”Alexander’s head of security, Marcus Reed, and another armed man stepped forward with their hands raised. Relief crashed through me so hard my arms nearly gave out. Reed took one look a

Noah's POVOur car had been overturned. We were completely upside down. For a moment, everything was silent except for the ringing in my ears and the feeling of my brunch coming up my throat. Then Alexander was moving. He quickly unbuckled me from my seat and pulled me out through the broken window despite the pain I could see etched on his face. I hadn't even seen him get out of the car yet here he was. “We have to run,” he said urgently, voice rough as he limped on one foot. “Can you move?”I nodded, adrenaline flooding my system. My ribs hurt like hell, but thanfully nothing felt broken. We sprinted into the nearest alley, rain soaking us instantly. Alexander kept one hand on me, the other holding the gun ready. Behind us, I heard car doors slamming and footsteps giving chase. We ran for what felt like forever, twisting through back streets, dodging dumpsters and puddles, until it felt like I couldnt run anymore. My lungs burned, but Alexander never let go.Finally, he pulled

Noah’s POVRed emergency lights pulsed across the walls as Alexander shoved me toward the bedroom closet. “There's no time. Grab that bag!” He pointed to a bag beside the closet and I rushed to pick it up and slung it over my shoulder. The fact that he had already packed had me wondering how long he'd been expecting this, but I barely had time to even thinking about that.I hadn’t even registred the fact that i was just kissing the man. Now this. Alexander’s phone was glued to his ear, barking multiple orders at people as he yanked open a hidden panel in the wall, revealing a small arsenal. What the fuck?Alexander had an arsenal in his home. He has guns and weapons and somehow he has ties to a dangerous man that wants to take his life. What the hell was going on?I couldn't bring my lips to form words as I watched Alexander strap a sleek black pistol to his side like it was completely normal to have row of guns just sitting inside the wall. “Who the hell is Victor Kane to you?
