My smart watch beeps. One look at it tells me that it’s time to shut my laptop and close for the day.

Walking out of my office, I pass by the open floor plan cubicles where the rest secretaries work.

“See you tomorrow everyone,” I call out as l wave.

“Wait up!”

Mariella runs up to me with an excited look on her face. “You can’t leave yet.”

I blink in confusion, “Why? Is there something I’m forgetting?”

“Yeah. An after-work drink with your work buddies.”

The laughter that bubbles out of me is genuine. I’m starting to really like my new colleagues.

“Let me guess; I can’t say no.”

She nods and clicks her fingers at me, “Exactly. It’s company tradition.”

And that’s how I find myself in cozy bar, squeezed in the midst of my co-workers. Everyone is drinking and laughing and I admire how close knit they are. In all my years as a secretary, I’ve never seen anything like this.

I smile as I watch Henry talk animatedly with a petite woman. She looks up, catches my gaze and edges closer to me.

“I’m Patty,” she introduces herself. She looks to be in her thirties. “Enjoying yourself?”

I smile bashfully, “Yeah. It’s nice that you guys take out time to do this everyday.”

She laughs, “We don’t do this everyday. We do this when someone new comes along. You know…as a way of saying welcome.”

From my corner eyes, I see everyone turning to look at me and a fierce blush ravages my face.

“Oh I…t-that’s nice,” I stammer. They are so sweet.

“It’s time for the toast,” Henry booms suddenly, rising to his feet and pointing his beer in my direction, “To our newest member and head secretary…”

His jolly voice is drowned out momentarily by velvety, baritone voices laughing from somewhere behind us.

I try my best to ignore but then I get the sudden impulse to turn around.

Eyes the color of smoked coffee beans connect with mine.

Damn…

I whip my head back around, my hands clutching the base of my throat.

What is he doing here? I know for sure it has nothing to do with respecting the company’s tradition of welcoming new staff.

Maybe he’s here to see Agatha.

I shake my head at myself. I need to get my thoughts under control. Besides, whoever he’s involved with is none of my business.

I drag my mind back to my group.

“…behalf of everyone in Soft Rock Inc. , we welcome you onboard,” Henry is still reciting with the biggest smile on his face, “Cheers!”

I’m lightheaded as I force myself to smile and clink glasses with my colleagues. The hair on my nape is standing on ends as I am hyper aware of the cruelly beautiful man that is seated merely tables away, watching me.

I’m more subtle as I peek at the other table. Neal is seated in the midst of two young men. His friends maybe.

I frown as I realize how little I knew of him. I don’t even know his friends.

“Star? You there?”

I’m supposed to be drinking and laughing and having fun with my colleagues. But I’m too caught up in the moment, watching Neal watch me.

For someone that claims to not know me, he sure can’t keep his eyes away.

His friends are seated on either side of him, both dressed in smart, well tailored suits.

He has ditched his suit jacket, revealing the white dress shirt has the first two buttons undone. I gulp at the slice of tanned, fair skin that peeks out invitingly; at the way his shirt barely hides the indentation of the huge muscles on his arm.

My lips twist into a slight frown. I should be repulsed at the sight of him, not attracted.

Dainty, well manicured hands materialize out of nowhere and sit affectionately on his shoulder.

He glances up and away from me, breaking the spell. Mildly disappointed, I trail my eyes up to see the owner of those hands and as I do, my heart pounds in anticipation.

Finally, my curiosity is about to be satisfied.

But when I see the woman’s face, curiosity is the last thing on my mind. My heart constricts painfully and I’m immediately nauseous.

Because beaming down at him, with flawless pale skin and raven black hair pulled into a chignon is none other than the fancy heiress he chose over me.

Catherine.

“Damn it!” I hiss to myself as I press myself against Neal’s door, slamming it shut.My eyes are wild, raking all over the office for any sign of the dark blond, dark eyed Adonis. My chest rises and falls as I breathe harshly from my encounter with Bethany Ward.“I need to meet Agatha,” I say aloud, not minding whether he can hear me or not. She needs to know that I’ve managed to score her an invite to Bethany’s gala.My voice bounces off the glass walls and I frown. “Ne…Mr Ward?”My heels click on the tiles as I step further inside. His seat is empty. There is no sign of him anywhere.“Mr Ward, you asked to see me,” I announce, beginning to get mad. He better not have summoned me up here as a prank. I met his evil mother for goodness sake.“In here!”I follow the sound of his voice to a smaller office tucked safely away from sight. It contains several awards hung on the walls as well as several pictures of two men I don’t recognize.“Soft Rock belonged to my grandfather,

Thunder rumbles softly in the background as I trudge into the office. My second day at work and I have arrived sopping wet.At least there are no amnesiac bosses welcoming me with impossible orders.“It should be illegal to come to work on rainy mornings,” Patty’s groan ushers me into the open floor plan secretaries’ space. Two other secretaries yawn. I shuffle through, trailing rainwater and a meek wave as I try not to shiver. When I get into my personal office, I discard my useless umbrella and turn the heater on to the max. “Hey boss.”“Oh my God!” I startle, whirling around to see Henry standing at the narrow door with two steaming mugs. “Sorry for scaring you,” he acquiesces, handing me one of the mugs. I bring it up to my nose and inhale.Hmm…Earl Grey tea.“A suitable apology present,” I mutter in approval as I sip the tea, “Good morning. Has His Royal Asshole-ness arrived?”He almost chokes on his tea as he snickers, “I take it you’re referring to Mr Ward. Yeah

“Mommy’s home!”My son’s excited voice cuts through my thoughts, welcoming me home. Donning a small smile, I crouch and extend my arms for a hug. “Come here, baby,” I laugh as he flies into my arms, nearly knocking me backwards.I ruffle his wispy blond hair and nuzzle into the crook of his tiny neck, taking in a huge, calming breath. He smells like Cheetos and left over pancakes but it’s comforting, especially after a crazy day.“Oh sweetie, you’re back.” I look up to see my mom shuffle over. She’s in her signature home wear– a comfy mismatched sweatshirt and sweatpants pair.“How was your first day?” She inquires kindly. That simple question quenches the momentary peace I felt seconds ago. How was my first day? Emotionally draining.Meeting Neal again after three years, him mistaking me for some new woman, his alleged inability to remember me, having to once again work as his secretary, seeing my best friend for the first time in three years, having drinks with my new, ult

“I want a review of the most recent meeting sent to my office before noon.”Narrow eyed, I stare him down. He’s glaring right back at me with zero recognition on his face. His tan, beautifully chiseled face that I missed so much, even though I’d rather die that admit it.Something is wrong…I just can’t figure out what. While I’m stuck in my confusion, he sweeps past, engulfing me in a thick wave of expensive cologne. Instinctively, I take a deep, greedy breath.A bitter taste fills my mouth immediately. He changed his cologne.Everything about him has changed. From the new company to the strange way he’s acting.“Oh and Star…if that’s your real name…do well to make yourself well acquainted with the rest secretaries,” Neal drawls without a pause in his arrogant strides. “Get things under control immediately and report back to me.”Right. • The Billionaire's Secretary.    Chapter Four: Star

Three years later: "Look who came back!" I open my arms wide as my mom rushes to embrace me. Her familiar warmth engulfs me, and I hug her tightly, breathing in her comforting scent of lavender and flour. I haven't seen her in three years, and the ache of that time apart melts away as she squeezes me like she never wants to let go. "I missed you, Mom," I say, my voice thick with emotion. She pulls back just enough to look at me, her tear-streaked face lit with joy. "I missed you too, sweetheart," she sniffs, brushing my hair back as though she's making sure it's really me. I do the same, noting the streaks of grey in her fawn colored hair. "Mommy!" A little tug on my legs pulls my attention down. My toddler, Ethan, is half-hidden behind me, his tiny fingers gripping my jeans. His little head is tilted to one side as he stares at Mom in childish wonder. Mom goes rigid, her eyes wide as she gapes from me to him, then back to me. My smile is tentative–I didn't mention my mo
