My smart watch beeps. One look at it tells me that it’s time to shut my laptop and close for the day.

Walking out of my office, I pass by the open floor plan cubicles where the rest secretaries work.

“See you tomorrow everyone,” I call out as l wave.

“Wait up!”

Mariella runs up to me with an excited look on her face. “You can’t leave yet.”

I blink in confusion, “Why? Is there something I’m forgetting?”

“Yeah. An after-work drink with your work buddies.”

The laughter that bubbles out of me is genuine. I’m starting to really like my new colleagues.

“Let me guess; I can’t say no.”

She nods and clicks her fingers at me, “Exactly. It’s company tradition.”

And that’s how I find myself in cozy bar, squeezed in the midst of my co-workers. Everyone is drinking and laughing and I admire how close knit they are. In all my years as a secretary, I’ve never seen anything like this.

I smile as I watch Henry talk animatedly with a petite woman. She looks up, catches my gaze and edges closer to me.

“I’m Patty,” she introduces herself. She looks to be in her thirties. “Enjoying yourself?”

I smile bashfully, “Yeah. It’s nice that you guys take out time to do this everyday.”

She laughs, “We don’t do this everyday. We do this when someone new comes along. You know…as a way of saying welcome.”

From my corner eyes, I see everyone turning to look at me and a fierce blush ravages my face.

“Oh I…t-that’s nice,” I stammer. They are so sweet.

“It’s time for the toast,” Henry booms suddenly, rising to his feet and pointing his beer in my direction, “To our newest member and head secretary…”

His jolly voice is drowned out momentarily by velvety, baritone voices laughing from somewhere behind us.

I try my best to ignore but then I get the sudden impulse to turn around.

Eyes the color of smoked coffee beans connect with mine.

Damn…

I whip my head back around, my hands clutching the base of my throat.

What is he doing here? I know for sure it has nothing to do with respecting the company’s tradition of welcoming new staff.

Maybe he’s here to see Agatha.

I shake my head at myself. I need to get my thoughts under control. Besides, whoever he’s involved with is none of my business.

I drag my mind back to my group.

“…behalf of everyone in Soft Rock Inc. , we welcome you onboard,” Henry is still reciting with the biggest smile on his face, “Cheers!”

I’m lightheaded as I force myself to smile and clink glasses with my colleagues. The hair on my nape is standing on ends as I am hyper aware of the cruelly beautiful man that is seated merely tables away, watching me.

I’m more subtle as I peek at the other table. Neal is seated in the midst of two young men. His friends maybe.

I frown as I realize how little I knew of him. I don’t even know his friends.

“Star? You there?”

I’m supposed to be drinking and laughing and having fun with my colleagues. But I’m too caught up in the moment, watching Neal watch me.

For someone that claims to not know me, he sure can’t keep his eyes away.

His friends are seated on either side of him, both dressed in smart, well tailored suits.

He has ditched his suit jacket, revealing the white dress shirt has the first two buttons undone. I gulp at the slice of tanned, fair skin that peeks out invitingly; at the way his shirt barely hides the indentation of the huge muscles on his arm.

My lips twist into a slight frown. I should be repulsed at the sight of him, not attracted.

Dainty, well manicured hands materialize out of nowhere and sit affectionately on his shoulder.

He glances up and away from me, breaking the spell. Mildly disappointed, I trail my eyes up to see the owner of those hands and as I do, my heart pounds in anticipation.

Finally, my curiosity is about to be satisfied.

But when I see the woman’s face, curiosity is the last thing on my mind. My heart constricts painfully and I’m immediately nauseous.

Because beaming down at him, with flawless pale skin and raven black hair pulled into a chignon is none other than the fancy heiress he chose over me.

Catherine.

The contact is electrifying. And memorable. Like the first kiss I ever had, but a million times better. My eyes flutter shut and my neck tips back on its own accord. His grip on my jaw is gentle yet demanding. His lips are soft, like the feather of a baby bird. They’re hot too. Deliciously hot.I lift a hand to cup the back of his neck and press his face closer than it already is. I want to feel him as much as I can. As deeply as I can.His other hand rests on my waist which he gives a gentle squeeze. A fire ignites in me, burning hot and bright all over my body, but especially in the spot between my legs.Neal’s lips detach from mine and kiss a trail up my face, to the sensitive spot beneath my ear.A breathless moan escapes from me.My heart is racing hard and fast, pumping hot, aroused blood through my veins. His tongue flicks out to lick at the sensitive skin and I arch, pressing my body into his own.His hand on my waist starts to trail lower as his lips make a slow retu

"Mom, I told you already. Neal and I aren't dating." My fingers tighten around my phone, the cool metal a stark contrast to the heat rising in my cheeks. On the other end, Mom's voice, high with giddiness, practically vibrates through the receiver, "But you moved in with him. And so quickly too." I press my free hand to my forehead in exasperation. "Mom, it's not like that," I groan. "It's purely for work. Mr. Ward needs me closer so we can... streamline things. You know...perks of being his head secretary as well as his assistant." "Is that so?" she hums, still not convinced. I blame James. Big mouth went and told her about my moving in with Neal. "Well then you better do a great deal of streamlining." The emphasis she places on 'streamlining' makes a blush rise up my face and spread down my neck. Kya Griffin, ever the romantic. "Besides," I tell her, "It's a temporary arrangement. I'll be out of here soon." She chuckles in a knowing manner, "Temporary, hmm?

I sit in my new bed, in my new room as I stare out of a giant window at the city below. The skyline is dusted a beautiful, dark orange as the sun sinks into the horizon. Then the city twinkles, like bright stars in an endless pitch galaxy.Being in the penthouse for the third time isn’t as bad as I imagined. As long as I avoid that cursed balcony, the experience is turning out to be a good one. Neal has been hovering and sweet. I'm surrounded by more comfort than I know what to do with.I just have to keep an eye on Ethan who is busy exploring the giant apartment. I don’t want him breaking anything.Something wafts through my nose. Something delicious.I stand and make my out of the room. Sure enough, I hear a sizzling sound coming from downstairs. My feet carry me to the direction of the sound. What I see there has me temporarily blown away.Neal is in the kitchen, standing over a sizzling pan. He’s shirtless, wearing only a pair of pants and an apron that covers little to not

The next day at work, I head upstairs to Neal’s office for the first time without being summoned. My eyes feel heavy and I rub at them. The result of having little to no sleep last night. How could I when all I could think about was how Neal was faring in his ginormous penthouse apartment?Granted, Agatha stayed behind to keep an eye on him but I couldn’t help worrying. I even made sure to keep my phone beside me in case he called but he didn’t.I need to see him and ascertain that he’s okay before I’ll be able to rest easy. When I reach his door, I knock twice before pushing it open and stepping into the office. He’s seated behind his massive desk, typing away at his computer.I don’t know what I was expecting to see. A man still in the process of recovering from an ordeal as gruesome as what he faced yesterday, maybe. Instead, here he is looking as handsome and put together as ever. His hair that was unruly is now properly brushed and slicked into place. His skin is dewy and

“Oh my God,” I gasp, clasping a hand over my mouth and pointing to his face, “Neal, you’re…you’re bleeding.”His eyebrows furrow, like he’s going to cry, as he lifts a shaky hand to his nose. His fingertips touch the blood streaming out and he brings them away to have a look. His face is dangerously pale.“Agatha.” “What?” He stares at me with wide, pained eyes. “I need Agatha.” My expression is stricken and it has nothing to do with jealousy.“Neal, you need a doctor.” He shakes his head, still staring at the blood on his fingers.“I need Agatha. She’ll know what to do…ah!”He winces and clutches at his head once again. Without another word, I’m springing up to my feet and going in search of his phone.Thankfully, he doesn’t have a password and I immediately scroll to her contact and dial it. While it rings, I turn to look at Neal who is sagged against the couch, groaning in pain.“Neal, hey.”Agatha’s voice sounds casual and relaxed over the phone. I feel bad to ha

I arrive back at the company’s premises pissed out of my mind and ready to unleash hell. My smart watch reads five forty–not an unusual time for Neal to still be at the office.Luckily for me, I don’t have to waste time re-entering the building; Neal walks out of the entrance and towards the garage. His jacket is slung over his arm and he carries a leather briefcase. I fume as I watch him stroll so casually after he just upended the lives of innocent people. “…you mean you lost your wallet?” He’s talking on the phone. Most probably to Louis.“Let me get this straight; you got blackout drunk at a yacht party and lost your wallet? I’m sorry to break it to you but you were…”“Neal Ward!”He jumps and turns to his right to see marching towards him. He taps the small back buds in his ear, “I’ll call you back… Yes it’s Star… Tell her that yourself.”He removes the earbuds and I see an emotion flash across his face. Guilt, most definitely. “You bastard!” I seethe, stabbing a fin
