Brianna Pounds “I'm coming over, Mom. I'll tell you all about it.” Nico hung up instantly and exhaled deeply. “You're such a good actor; you should look into the profession,” Kariana cackled. Nicodemo adjusted his shirt collar triumphantly. “I'm a made man, Kariana. Plus, I've always been a great actor. How is it that you're just noticing one of my many fortes?” he boasted. The way their lips parted to guffaw angered me. I padded toward them. “How dare you!” I swung for his cheek, only to pass right through him. My anger boiled over. How could he? As if noting my misery which I knew they couldn't, Nicodemo pulled his mistress in for a kiss, the smooching sound sending me into a silent rage. “Remember everything?” She giggled in response. He kissed her again as if proud before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a key. The beep of his car echoed through the air. “There,” he informed her, taking Kariana arm in arm and striding toward the vehicle. The luxury car I'd worked my ass off to ensure he secured. Thinking of it now, it churned my soul to realize how naive I'd been. I'd been so easy to fool. “Baby, you don't have to work anymore. I've got this, okay?” he would whine. “Brianna, please, could you do the numbers?” He’d head straight to bed, and in the morning, he would praise me when I told him I’d finished the paperwork. “You're so smart, wifey. It boosts my ego to call you my wife.” I'd smiled, always available whenever he needed me. If he told me I had to appear at the company in an hour to move the numbers and impress investors, I'd work myself to the bone to make them skyrocket. I’d worked so freaking hard all to be just a brain behind this man, and what do I get? A fucking stab at the damn back. They settled into the car, and only the roar of the engine brought my attention back to the moment. How the hell was I going to get to my father's mansion before them, or at the same time? I knew my mom would hear me. She’d be able to feel my presence. I made the decision before they could drive off and hopped in, penetrating through the backseat door and seating myself, shoulders squared at full alert. Someone at home would be able to see or hear me. I was certain of it. The drive was agonizing as the two nitwits wouldn't stop praising themselves and rubbing their hands over each other. I heaved a sigh I'd been holding in when the headlights finally illuminated the exterior of my father's mansion. This was it. Before he could even park the car, I sprinted through the door like air passing by, almost running myself over as I stumbled to the ground. With a grunt, I stood and recomposed myself. I glanced at Nicodemo, who was likely reciting his lies with that bitch, and then dashed toward the large wooden door of the mansion. Droplets of rainwater that'd followed me in settled on the floor as I stood right inside the entrance. The bright lights were far too much for this hour; I struggled to adjust my sight. No one was in the spacious living area, and a glance at the island showed it was empty too. It'd been so long since I'd been here that if I didn't still have my memory, I wouldn't remember my way around. The sound of footsteps reminded me of my mission. Get to Mom. Before I could take a step, the front door creaked open. The two idiots were right behind me. I wanted to find my mom before they did, but her panicked voice dragged my attention back to the stairs. “I saw your lights!” She was descending the stairs in a rush, moving far too fast for her age. “Mom!” I started toward her. She was looking straight at me. Into my eyes. I knew it. I fucking knew my mother would be able to see me. I was her daughter, and I'd never doubted our bond. My thoughts halted as I passed right through her. It was normal. I'd been running through things all night. She would surely turn around, look at me, and ask me if what Nicodemo said was true. This was normal, right? My breath hitched as I turned. Mom, still in a panicked stance, was nearing Nicodemo. “What did you say happened to Brianna?” she inquired. “No, Mom, wait. I'm here. Brianna is right here!” I neared her and touched her arm, but she didn't flinch as if I'd truly touched her. “Brianna... she...” Nicodemo broke into an act, a sob that squeezed my heart. “She ran off with another man and left me a letter.” Kariana held out a paper toward my mom, who clutched her robe tie before taking it. Her hair was a mess, and her eyes were red and groggy, as if she'd just woken up from a crying spell. “Mom, no, don't listen to them. Listen to me. I'm right here. Your Brianna is here!” Nicodemo blazed a look into my eyes, and I almost suspected he could see me. I shook my head at him, only for him to look right above me. I turned to see what he was focused on. Papi. My father took his time descending the stairs, and I heard Nicodemo’s sobs increase in volume. “Father, you won't believe what Brianna did to me,” Nicodemo cried out. Father strode past me. He didn't see me either. I never truly expected him to; my father and I never got along. We only tolerated each other once I got involved with Nicodemo. He believed Nico was the only right decision I'd ever made. Well, look, Papi. Nico is a cold-blooded monster just like you. No wonder you two got along so well. My mom joined Nico in sobbing. “Jack, I can't believe this.” She was beginning to stain the paper with real tears. Real tears, unlike Nico’s fake ones. “And who is this?” Father's deep voice deadpanned, his eyes narrowed at Kariana. He took the fabricated note from my mom's loose grasp. “Kariana. I'm the fiancée of the man your daughter ran off with,” Kariana introduced herself in a low, sympathetic manner. Fucking pieces of shit.142 Nicodemo Harrington “Where are you, Nicodemo? Brianna has been in a car accident!” “I'm at home,” I murmured, my voice flat. “Do you hear me, Nicodemo?” I set the phone face down on the side table. “Nicodemo?” Lydia called my name at least five more times more before the line went dead. “Where were we?” I asked. “Nico, I'm scared,” Brenda whispered. “Scared of what?” I furrowed my brow. “What if she dies?” “She's not going to die. Don't worry. It's just a minor injury, Lydia's overreacting.” Brenda pulled away slightly, her eyes wide with fear. “How do you know that?” “How do I know what?” I scoffed. “You're ruining the mood. Come on.” She looked down, nervously wringing her fingers. “I can't do this. I'm terrified that everything that happened before is going to repeat itself.” “What? Like the pregnancy, with Brianna going into a coma again, or worse, dying this time? And you, having a second baby for me? Is that what you're afraid of?” I raised my eyebrows at her.
141Nicodemo Harrington“Where are you going?” I asked. She froze in her tracks. I knew this day would come.“Nowhere. Just going out with a friend.”“A friend?”Hmm. Since when did she start keeping friends I didn't know about?“Mm-hmm.”“Which one?” I asked. “Do I know them?”She laughed, a dry, mocking sound. “Oh, no. You don't know them. Why are you even asking me? Don't start questioning me, Nico.”Total bitch. The nerve to act self-righteous right to my face, as if she wasn't worse than I ever was. I had tried my best for her. I had tried to make this marriage work, tried to redeem myself, yet she went right ahead and ruined everything.Good luck to her for backing me into a corner like this. “When you get back, do you mind going somewhere with me?”She stopped halfway down the stairs and looked back at me with a furrowed brow. “Where?”“To buy a car. For you,” I said, pointing down toward the driveway.“For me? Wow. Why?”I shoved my hands into my pockets. “Because I love you?
140Nicodemo HarringtonHearing what sounded like her voice, I quickened my pace. “Brianna?” I turned the corner, only to hit another empty hallway. Were my eyes playing tricks on me? There was no way. I had seen her go this way. I'd seen her cross right into this wing. How the hell had she vanished just like that? How was that even possible?“Brianna Pounds?” I hurried forward to take another turn, and before I reached the corner, I heard a door slam shut followed by a dull thud behind it.Could that be her? I rushed over and pressed my ear against the wood.“Shh,” a voice whispered inside. It sounded so much like Brianna. But why was she hiding from me? And if it was her, hiding for God knows what reason, who was she shushing? Who was she in there with?Brianna didn't know anyone here. Even though this was completely outside our office wing, I was positive she didn't know a soul.Shifting away from the door, I took a few steps further down the hall, making sure I didn't miss her if
139Brianna Pounds“Baby, do you like this one?”My eyes trailed away from the sight of Zeus standing across the showroom floor with another woman, my nose wrinkling as I shot a bewildered look at Nicodemo.Baby? “What?”“Do you like the car?”I glanced at the sleek, silver Porsche before bringing my eyes back to his face. “Yeah, sure.”His gaze flicked swiftly over my shoulder before settling back on me with quiet intensity.Clearing my throat, I readjusted my posture, turning my attention toward the car dealer standing in front of us. He flashed me a polite, professional smile, and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes. What on earth was Zeus doing here, and who was the woman beside him? I was dying to glance over my shoulder again, but Nicodemo's eyes remained locked onto me, watching my every move.“What?” I asked. He furrowed his brows. “What is what?”“You're staring at me,” I said, gulping as I looked away. “A bit too much.”“Well, can't a man admire his wife?”It took everyt
138Nicodemo HarringtonShe fucking smelled like another man. My nose wasn't playing tricks on me. For weeks now, my mind had been going completely haywire. Brianna must really think I'm a fool.“Ready?”“Almost. Give me a minute.”“Sure, love. Take all the time you need.” I offered a tight smile, my phone ringing right on cue. I held up a finger. “Excuse me, love.”She gave me one of those fake, tight-lipped smiles I knew all too well. She really thought she was so smart.Glancing down at the screen, I swiped the green icon and brought the phone to my ear.The contact on the other end knew better than to waste my time. “I looked into it. He'll be there.”“Good.” My heart settled into a calm state before the impending storm. I hung up, tapping the screen to open the files he had just sent over.Watching the paper trail of this man she'd been obsessed with lately, a wave of pure disgust twisted in my chest.Did she honestly think our marriage meant nothing anymore? How dare she? It had
137Brianna Pounds“Zeus?” I whispered, my back beginning to ache under the sheer weight of his body.He didn't answer right away. He took a few harsh, steadying breaths before he suddenly jolted off me.Uprooting my torso from the cold wood of the table, I spun around to find him buckling his belt and zipping up his pants.“What are you doing?”“What does it look like I'm doing?” he deadpanned, keeping his focus entirely on fixing his pants and smoothing out his shirt.A heavy wave of shame washed over me as I reached down, readjusting my underwear to cover myself, my hands coated in a sticky mix of our fluids.“Zeus...”I barely finished his name before he shot a razor-sharp glare at me.My heart exploded into a wild, frantic rhythm.“I've given you what you wanted, so stay out of my life,” he said, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. “I don't ever want to see you again. Whether by accident or by you stalking me, I don't care. Just make sure our paths never cross again.”My mouth
004Brianna Pounds One would've thought it was all over now. That my husband had just watched his mistress, or rather collaborated with his mistress to murder me, his pregnant wife, and that was it. But no.I didn't know what cruel games the universe was playing with me, because I was standing ove
