Brianna Pounds "You're pregnant, honey?" Nico's voice beamed with a creepy kind of care, eyes shining with happiness as he neared me. I hadn't had papers or anything to prove my pregnancy, suddenly making me grateful for the bleeding, even though my chest was tightening with the fact that my baby could be in danger from Nico's bitch pushing me that hard. I prayed my baby was okay. My heart lightened a bit as Nico lowered to the height of my stomach, as if listening to the heartbeat, even though I doubted the baby had a heartbeat yet. "You really are pregnant, Brianna." He rose to my height. "Since when? And you've been hiding this news from me? How could you?" He tapped my cheek lightly as if scolding a child. Even though I found his behavior strange, I was just happy he believed me. "I... I was going to tell you tonight. It hasn't been long since I found out." I shook my head, my words fumbling. "We are pregnant again, Nicodemo." My eyes were bright, looking into his. He looked over to Kariana, who was seething, and I was glad. I was winning back my Nico. Then, in an off-guard move, he slapped me hard against my cheek. I stumbled back from the impact, holding the spot. "Jesus, why did you do that, Nico?" "You're pregnant, and you didn't tell me?" He took very slow, creepy steps, and I began moving backward as I tried to explain. "Nico, stop. You're scaring me. I told you I found out not long ago." "Did you, huh?" He kept nearing me. "Babe," I cried. "Nico, stop. This isn't you." Truthfully, that wasn't him. I'd never seen this side of the man I'd been married to for years. "This isn't you, stop." He landed a blow to my mouth. I tasted copper immediately, and a flash of hot white momentarily took my vision and balance, sending me landing to the floor. Only it was the stairs, and I'd landed badly, rolling. Neither the pain nor gravity stopped until I slammed into the floor at the very end. Blood shot from my nose, some rushing into my mouth, and from the way my head pounded I knew I was having a head bleed too. It started slipping into my eyes immediately when I tried to open them. I managed to glimpse Kariana descending the stairs with an object I couldn't quite make out, and I began rolling myself backward with no sense of direction. With just one eye open, I saw Nicodemo following behind her. "Nico, please. Nico, stop her. Don't do this to me, please." The bitch reached me at the same time and hit my head with an object that dropped me fully to the ground, darkness swallowing me. It must've been hours or even minutes I was knocked out, I couldn't tell. All I knew was that I awoke to Nico, my own husband, tying me up tightly with a rope with the help of his bitch. Everything was pitch black and, by the lack of air, it took no brainer to know I was inside a sack. They'd put me in a sack and were tying me up. My own husband. I managed a cry, but it only came out muffled, which made me taste the rag they'd used to gag me. My hands were bound together too, and my legs, I noticed as I tried to wiggle. They caught on to my resistance as Kariana snied, "Is she dumb or something, thinking she could wiggle her way out of this? That woman is stupid." Nico laughed, "I know." And suddenly it was like I was being lifted off the ground to an uncomfortable position that roared pain through my body and spine. My baby. I remembered when the pain shot me in my lower belly, sharp. My baby. "Nico, let me go," I muffled out, wiggling to make it uncomfortable for whoever was carrying me so they'd drop me. They did, only in a hard slam, and the sound of a truck shutting made me know exactly where they had put me. Oh no, they were going to kill me. Realization dawned on me. It'd been Nicodemo, my husband, who'd been against me conceiving. It'd been him and his bitch after me for years. "Let me out!" I screamed, only the sound didn't leave my lips, only intensifying the heat in this stupid sack they had me in. I could barely breathe. Hearing the ignition roar to life and their sharp laughter, I began fighting. I wasn't going to let them take me wherever they were headed, but my fight was met with exhaustion too quickly. I hadn't known if it was the stress and pain my body had been through that sent me into episodes of dizziness and fainting. The next time I regained awareness, I could suddenly breathe air that didn't smell like a sack's, but the ground felt different. Where was I? Ignoring my pounding head, I pried my eyes open and met Nico and his bitch backing away from me, discussing with a man I didn't know. The two were blocking the view so much so I could only see his sandals. "Yes, yes. Remove the baby," Nicodemo instructed. My breath harshed. My own husband was giving orders to have my unborn child removed prematurely. I didn't know what made me scream, maybe pure stupidity. I should've made a run instead even though my hands and legs were still bound, and my scream made them three turn at the same time. "Oh, she's awake," Nico declared. "Let's begin the procedure right away," the other man said. Looking at Nico, tears and exhaustion clouding my eyes, I pleaded, "Please, I'm begging you Nico, don't do this to me. I'm your wife, remember?" "I know, honey," he said in a coiling sweetness, "that's why I'm doing this. For us, okay?" His words were to distract me, and before I knew it, the man I was now presuming was a whack doctor had injected something at the side of my stomach, and it was taking effect immediately. My eyes were fluttering closed as I pinned them to Nico. "Please," I pleaded softly. "Goodbye, Brianna." He waved to me before darkness claimed me once more.142 Nicodemo Harrington “Where are you, Nicodemo? Brianna has been in a car accident!” “I'm at home,” I murmured, my voice flat. “Do you hear me, Nicodemo?” I set the phone face down on the side table. “Nicodemo?” Lydia called my name at least five more times more before the line went dead. “Where were we?” I asked. “Nico, I'm scared,” Brenda whispered. “Scared of what?” I furrowed my brow. “What if she dies?” “She's not going to die. Don't worry. It's just a minor injury, Lydia's overreacting.” Brenda pulled away slightly, her eyes wide with fear. “How do you know that?” “How do I know what?” I scoffed. “You're ruining the mood. Come on.” She looked down, nervously wringing her fingers. “I can't do this. I'm terrified that everything that happened before is going to repeat itself.” “What? Like the pregnancy, with Brianna going into a coma again, or worse, dying this time? And you, having a second baby for me? Is that what you're afraid of?” I raised my eyebrows at her.
141Nicodemo Harrington“Where are you going?” I asked. She froze in her tracks. I knew this day would come.“Nowhere. Just going out with a friend.”“A friend?”Hmm. Since when did she start keeping friends I didn't know about?“Mm-hmm.”“Which one?” I asked. “Do I know them?”She laughed, a dry, mocking sound. “Oh, no. You don't know them. Why are you even asking me? Don't start questioning me, Nico.”Total bitch. The nerve to act self-righteous right to my face, as if she wasn't worse than I ever was. I had tried my best for her. I had tried to make this marriage work, tried to redeem myself, yet she went right ahead and ruined everything.Good luck to her for backing me into a corner like this. “When you get back, do you mind going somewhere with me?”She stopped halfway down the stairs and looked back at me with a furrowed brow. “Where?”“To buy a car. For you,” I said, pointing down toward the driveway.“For me? Wow. Why?”I shoved my hands into my pockets. “Because I love you?
140Nicodemo HarringtonHearing what sounded like her voice, I quickened my pace. “Brianna?” I turned the corner, only to hit another empty hallway. Were my eyes playing tricks on me? There was no way. I had seen her go this way. I'd seen her cross right into this wing. How the hell had she vanished just like that? How was that even possible?“Brianna Pounds?” I hurried forward to take another turn, and before I reached the corner, I heard a door slam shut followed by a dull thud behind it.Could that be her? I rushed over and pressed my ear against the wood.“Shh,” a voice whispered inside. It sounded so much like Brianna. But why was she hiding from me? And if it was her, hiding for God knows what reason, who was she shushing? Who was she in there with?Brianna didn't know anyone here. Even though this was completely outside our office wing, I was positive she didn't know a soul.Shifting away from the door, I took a few steps further down the hall, making sure I didn't miss her if
139Brianna Pounds“Baby, do you like this one?”My eyes trailed away from the sight of Zeus standing across the showroom floor with another woman, my nose wrinkling as I shot a bewildered look at Nicodemo.Baby? “What?”“Do you like the car?”I glanced at the sleek, silver Porsche before bringing my eyes back to his face. “Yeah, sure.”His gaze flicked swiftly over my shoulder before settling back on me with quiet intensity.Clearing my throat, I readjusted my posture, turning my attention toward the car dealer standing in front of us. He flashed me a polite, professional smile, and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes. What on earth was Zeus doing here, and who was the woman beside him? I was dying to glance over my shoulder again, but Nicodemo's eyes remained locked onto me, watching my every move.“What?” I asked. He furrowed his brows. “What is what?”“You're staring at me,” I said, gulping as I looked away. “A bit too much.”“Well, can't a man admire his wife?”It took everyt
138Nicodemo HarringtonShe fucking smelled like another man. My nose wasn't playing tricks on me. For weeks now, my mind had been going completely haywire. Brianna must really think I'm a fool.“Ready?”“Almost. Give me a minute.”“Sure, love. Take all the time you need.” I offered a tight smile, my phone ringing right on cue. I held up a finger. “Excuse me, love.”She gave me one of those fake, tight-lipped smiles I knew all too well. She really thought she was so smart.Glancing down at the screen, I swiped the green icon and brought the phone to my ear.The contact on the other end knew better than to waste my time. “I looked into it. He'll be there.”“Good.” My heart settled into a calm state before the impending storm. I hung up, tapping the screen to open the files he had just sent over.Watching the paper trail of this man she'd been obsessed with lately, a wave of pure disgust twisted in my chest.Did she honestly think our marriage meant nothing anymore? How dare she? It had
137Brianna Pounds“Zeus?” I whispered, my back beginning to ache under the sheer weight of his body.He didn't answer right away. He took a few harsh, steadying breaths before he suddenly jolted off me.Uprooting my torso from the cold wood of the table, I spun around to find him buckling his belt and zipping up his pants.“What are you doing?”“What does it look like I'm doing?” he deadpanned, keeping his focus entirely on fixing his pants and smoothing out his shirt.A heavy wave of shame washed over me as I reached down, readjusting my underwear to cover myself, my hands coated in a sticky mix of our fluids.“Zeus...”I barely finished his name before he shot a razor-sharp glare at me.My heart exploded into a wild, frantic rhythm.“I've given you what you wanted, so stay out of my life,” he said, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. “I don't ever want to see you again. Whether by accident or by you stalking me, I don't care. Just make sure our paths never cross again.”My mouth
033Brianna PoundsKariana exhaled a long, shaky breath. “Don't you miss me? Don't you miss us?” She gestured wildly between them. “Everything we shared... are you really going to throw it all away for that slut?”My breath stalled in my lungs. She pointed toward the door as if she knew I was stand
