XAVIER

I followed Laura back up to the penthouse, watching her shoulders tremble slightly with leftover tears she was trying to hide.

The elevator ride was silent except for her occasional sniffles, and I found myself painfully aware of how uncomfortable I was with the whole situation.

Emotions weren’t my area of expertise. Give me a psychological negotiation or a territorial dispute and I’d know exactly what to do. But a crying woman? That was foreign to me.

When we got inside, Laura went str

XAVIER Marcus nodded and went back to his calls while I headed upstairs to Laura’s room. The door was unlocked and I stepped inside, immediately hit by the faint scent of lavender and the undertones of fresh detergent. The room was neat and organized in a way that suggested someone who was used to living in small spaces and making the most of what they had. Her clothes were folded in the dresser, a few books stacked on the nightstand, a pair of flip flops by the door. I moved to the dresser first, opening drawers randomly, looking for anything that might lead me to the documents. But instead, I found myself staring at her clothes—most of the things she carried along were the things I had gotten for her. She'd worn every single one and in a way, that made my heart flutter with something close to happiness. My hand reached out almost of its own accord, touching a soft grey sweater that she’d worn a few days ago. Before I could stop myself, I lifted it to my face and breath

XAVIER I could feel it starting again—that tightness in my chest, the way my breathing wanted to turn rapid and strained, the creeping sense of panic clutching at my lungs, threatening to pull me under. No. Not again. Not when Laura was just kidnapped and needed me more than ever. I managed to turn toward the entrance, despite my body trembling violently from head to toe. I heard the shuffle of Marcus’s feet wanting to follow behind me but I needed to be left alone right now. I didn't want anyone seeing me in this state. “Marcus,” I said as I paused, my voice coming out more strained than I intended. “Stay here. I need to be alone right now.” “But Boss—” “That’s an order, Marcus.” I didn’t wait for his response. I simply turned and walked toward my office, each step slow and careful, fighting against every instinct that screamed at me to either get it together or succumb to this attack. I twisted the study doorknob, and the moment it clicked shut behind me and I turne

LAURA With my jaw practically to the floor, I stared at Jennifer in absolute shock and terror. My mind quite literally refused to accept what you were right in front of me. Jennifer looked different—at least from the last time I’d seen her. She was dressed in black tactical gear instead of her usual designer clothes that she always wore, her blonde hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail. But it was her eyes—her eyes were what truly frightened me. The sheer hatred in them was undeniable, burning with an intensity I’d never seen before. I mean, I always knew Jennifer hated my guts and the very thought of my existence, always did things to make me look bad in front of Mother and Father so they’d like her more. And the funny part was that she identified me as the enemy from a pretty early age. It was rather scary to be honest, she always had that look on her face. That look that said if I was gone…everything would be better but this, this was entirely different. She was go

LAURA “Ughh,” I groaned as I tried to move my limbs but it was no use. Everything hurt.Pain was the first thing I registered as consciousness slowly crept back in—a throbbing sensation that radiated from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. As my eyes slowly opened, my vision swam, blurry shapes and images dancing at the edges until they finally came into focus.I was on the floor of a moving car—I could feel the movement underneath me—wedged between the back seat and the front. My cheeks were pressed against rough covers that smelled like cigarettes and something rusty that made my stomach turn.Panic surged through so fast through my veins I barely knew what to do with it. I had to fight to keep the anxiety that was clutching at me at bay.But nevertheless, it was hard to keep myself from thrashing and screaming and giving away the fact that I was awake. My hands were bound together behind me with rope ties that bit at my wrists, and there was duct tape over my mouth tha

XAVIER “Boss, boss, boss!” I could hear Marcus’s voice through my haze of sleep and I was already annoyed. I forced my eyes open, the bright lights of the infirmary stabbing into my skull. My head was still pounding, my body felt like it had been run over by a truck, and the last thing I needed was Marcus breathing down my neck.“Marcus, I don’t like being woken up in this manner.” My voice came out rougher than I intended. “What is it?”“It’s just you’ve barely been conscious the entire day, boss.”I glanced at the clock on the wall and it was already evening. I’d been out for hours.“Yes Marcus, I can see that.” I pressed the tips of my fingers against my temple, trying to ease the throbbing. “My head still hurts and you being here talking to me isn’t helping.”Marcus shifted uncomfortably, and something in his expression made my chest tighten. I knew that look. I and Marcus had been together for too long for me not to. That careful, calculating expression he got when he had to de

LAURAAfter I was done changing, I headed downstairs to the east wing hallway. I decided on a tight black top and some dark leggings. Juniper had advised me to wear dark colors so we wouldn’t be easily recognized. My heart was racing with something that felt dangerously close to excitement. After being cooped up in the safe house for what felt like forever, the prospect of just getting out—even for a quick drive—felt like all the freedom I’ve been begging for. When I reached the hallway, Juniper and Lucas were already waiting. Lucas had car keys twirling around his finger, that trademark playful grin plastered across his face.“Ready for your grand escape?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with quiet mischief.“More than ready,” I said, unable to suppress my own smile.“Okay let’s go.” Lucas gestured toward the side exit with a dramatic flourish. “Your chariot awaits, my lady.”Juniper rolled her eyes, but I caught the smile tugging at her lips. “You’re ridiculous.”“Ridiculously charmi
