LAURA

I slammed my door and jumped into bed, taking hold of a pillow and screaming into it at the very top of my lungs.

Just who the hell did he think he was?!

Ugh.

I was so mad that I wanted to tear the room apart or scream or go to his stupid face and give him a piece of my mind.

I really thought I was fine with it. With not knowing if Richard had really just committed suicide or if Xavier was actually behind it.

I had already decided not to care and to just make the best of this two year fake relationship but curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to know.

Especially after how that kiss made me feel.

I thought that maybe, maybe my impression of him was wrong and unfair and he deserved an opportunity to defend himself. Maybe he wasn’t a killer after all and was simply a complicated person.

But I was wrong.

He was cold and cruel, and obviously heartless—because how could he say such a thing? What the hell did he mean by showing mercy was just a sign of weakness?

He had no regard for

XavierThe conference room was on the thirty-second floor of the Blackwell Tower.I sat at the head of the table, fingers drumming against the polished table as my mother’s—no, my legal team shuffled through mountains of paperwork.“Mr. Blackwell, if you’ll just sign here,” Gerald Hutchins, the lead attorney, slid another document across the table. His thick round glasses caught the morning light as he gestured to the signature. “This officially transfers Grace Blackwell’s logistics company into your name, effective immediately.”I picked up my pen, feeling the weight of it between my fingers. This was it. The moment I’d been working toward for years. Every compromise, every calculated move, every sleepless night had led to up to this exact moment. My phone buzzed in my pocket.I ignored it and scrawled my signature across the line, the ink flowing thick and smooth. “And here,” Hutchins continued, sliding over another document. “This one finalizes the board transition. You’ll have

XAVIER“Where did Laura go?” I asked when I was done with my call. Juniper rolled her eyes and Lucas pointed towards the bathroom.“She didn’t seem okay, you might want to go check up on her.”I sighed, following his directions to the closest bathroom down the hallway. “Hey Laura, you in there? Lucas tells me that you’re not okay, what’s wrong?” I knocked and some seconds later, the door came creeping open. My eyes fell over Laura’s small figure, she was practically shaking all over, her face as white as a ghost. She looked…mortified.“What’s wrong?” I asked, panic lacing in my voice. My eyebrows creased as I watched Laura try to form a sentence but failed. She only lifted up her phone and showed me a text message.“What is this?”“I don’t know,” she managed, her voice breaking as tears began to trail down her eyes. I read the text message again and I still didn’t get what was wrong with her. “Is someone wishing you a happy married life on your mother’s behalf that emotional?”La

LAURAI looked out of the window at the passing buildings as we drove at high speed. The car was relatively silent despite there being four people in it.The driver, Juniper at the front seat, and of course my lovely soon-to-be husband right next to me. The silence was suffocating. It wasn’t helping my very loud thoughts be any quieter. But what was I supposed to say? If we were like a normal couple, we’d be nuzzled up together whispering sweet nothings, talking about the bright future ahead but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.Xavier just sat there, on his tablet looking at green and red stats that I didn’t understand. He hadn’t said a word. I just noticed how his eyes lingered on me a little longer when he saw me in the wedding dress he purchased. I could say the feeling was mutual. His stylist did an impeccable job—he was already dead drop gorgeous but now it was just unfair to the rest of society. His jet black hair was styled perfectly, his suit was tailored like a glove

XAVIERI hadn't slept a wink.I spent the entire night in my office making calls and ensuring that Richard Donovan’s death looked exactly like what it was supposed to.A depressed man who couldn't handle rejection finally giving up. My people were thorough and the police wouldn’t be finding a single thing suspicious.I set my phone down and squeezed the bridge of my nose. My eyes ached from too much screen exposure but it was safe to say I had gotten the job done.I laid back in my chair, kicking my legs up and closing my eyes for a moment of silence.Richard wouldn’t be coming back, I’d done what was necessary to protect what was mine. That was what I told myself, so why?Why was there a voice at the back of my mind that sounded like my mother asking if this was who I'd become?“I didn't raise you to be this way.” I could still remember how she looked when she said those words, the cold in her eyes and lack of maternal love.Maybe she’d stopped loving me a long time ago. Maybe eve

  • The Billionaire's Ultimatum   THE MORNING AFTER

LAURA My eyes peered open and I found myself still in the master bedroom of Xavier’s pent house. It wasn’t a dream. But some part of me wanted it to—Donovan’s existence, this marriage contract with Xavier, the family who’d adopted me. All of it. If I could only sleep and wake up and find out that it was all a figment of my imagination. But wishes like that don’t come true. I turned in bed feeling groggy and not wanting to get up. My gut still hurt and my mind still reeled from the news of Donovan’s death. I couldn’t shake off the image of Xavier’s cold expression when he told me about it, the way he said “apparent suicide” like he was simply commenting on the weather. I push myself up, sitting at the edge of the bed as I look out of the window, watching the sun rise over Chicago. The pink and orange hues softened the atmosphere of the room but that didn't help ward off the deep sinking feeling I had at the depths of my stomach. The very epiphany that I'd made a deal with
