Chapter 10: The Person Behind Everything

The room went so quiet I could hear my own heart knocking against my ribs, the man who pushed you is still alive.

Ethan’s words hit me like cold water. Nobody moved, nobody breathed.

I looked at Lily her face had gone white, white like paper. The tears on her cheeks didn’t look fake anymore, for the first time since I had known her, my sister looked truly scared. And that scared me more than anything else that night.

Because Lily is only afraid when she knows something terrible.

What are you saying? Ethan’s mother whispered.

Ethan lowered his phone slowly, his eyes stayed on Lily like he was pinning her to the wall.

The caller said Richard Evans wasn’t the one who did it.

My stomach dropped. My father? Not responsible? Then why did Lily point at him all those years ago? Why had she looked so sure? My mind filled with questions, and not one of them had an answer.

Lily jumped up so fast her chair almost fell.

Stop, her voice was shaking. Ethan, stop digging into this.

Why? His eyes were dark now.

I just… I don’t think it’s healthy to dig up the past.

Nobody believed her, not even herself. I could see it — the fear, the panic, written all over her like sweat. She wasn’t protecting anyone anymore, she was trying to stop something from coming out into the light.

Ethan saw it too, Who are you protecting?

Lily looked away, her silence said more than words ever could.

Then his phone buzzed again- a message, he opened it and I watched his jaw go tight like a fist. Without a word, he grabbed his jacket and stood.

I’m leaving.

My heart jumped into my throat, where are you going?

He turned and looked at me, for one second our eyes locked, and something inside my chest pulled tight. Because for the first time since we married, he wasn’t looking at me with anger.

He looked worried for me.

“I need answers.” Then he was gone, the door shutting behind him like a book closing on a chapter I hadn’t finished reading.

The moment the door closed, Lily’s whole body folded into the chair like a puppet with cut strings, the strong woman everyone admired was gone, What was left looked broken.

Something about the way she was breaking felt wrong, very wrong.

Our eyes met neither of us spoke for a long moment, then she laughed — a hollow sound, empty, like a laugh with nothing behind it.

You should leave him.

I blinked “What?”

You should leave Ethan.

The words knocked the air out of me “What are you talking about?”

She shook her head, tears filling her eyes. You don’t understand?

My chest squeezed, Understand what?

She looked away, and the fear came back into her face, longer this time.

He isn’t the danger.

A cold shiver ran down my back “What?”

She stood, grabbing her purse like she regretted every word already in the air, I have to go.

I stepped in front of her. “No.”

She froze, I never stop Lily. I never challenge her but that night was different.

You’re not leaving until you tell me the truth.

Years of swallowed pain poured into my voice, the room went silent around us. She stared at me for a long time, then she laughed again. Tired this time, sad this time.

The truth is none of this was supposed to happen.

My heart pounded “What does that mean?”

She opened her mouth — and the front door burst open.

We all jumped, a servant ran in her face pale with fear. Mr Kingsley’s grandfather is here.

The room froze again, Arthur Kingsley. The most powerful man in the family, the only person Ethan ever truly listens to.

He walked in with a face like stone, grim and serious in a way that made my skin crawl. His eyes moved over the room — me, Lily, Ethan’s mother — until he finally spoke.

Where is Ethan?

Nobody answered right away, then his mother pointed at the door. “He left.”

Arthur cursed under his breath, and that alone shocked everyone in the room, because Arthur Kingsley never loses control, never.

What happened? His mother asked.

His face turned darker than I had ever seen it. Someone tried to kill Ethan.

The room exploded into noise.

“What?!”

My knees went weak, as if the floor had disappeared under me. Lily gasped, his mother grabbed the table to keep standing.

The brakes on his car were cut, Arthur said.

Nobody breathed, the words hung in the air like smoke that wouldn’t clear. This wasn’t an accident, this was someone trying to murder him.

Then I looked at Lily again, and for one split second, I saw something in her eyes that made my blood turn to ice.

Not surprise, recognition. Like she already knew this was coming.

Arthur saw it too, his gaze sharpened like a blade “Lily.”

She flinched, and the room went silent again. He walked toward her, one slow step at a time, until he stood right in front of her. His voice turned cold as winter.

Tell me why you aren’t surprised.

All the color drained from her face “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Arthur laughed, and the sound was dangerous, like a warning. “Wrong answer.”

Real fear broke across Lily’s face, then her phone rang.

We all jumped again. The name on the screen flashed bright, and the moment Lily saw it, she screamed — an actual scream — and the phone fell from her hand and hit the floor. The screen stayed lit, everyone could see it, everyone.

My blood ran cold, because there was only one name glowing on that screen.

The same name Ethan had just found.

The same name tied to the hospital three years ago.

The same name tied to the witness.

The same name tied to whoever pushed me down those stairs.

The same name tied to whoever had just cut the brakes on Ethan’s car.

When Arthur Kingsley saw that name, all the color left his face too. For the first time since I had met him, that powerful old man looked afraid.

Then he whispered one sentence, one sentence that broke everything wide open.

He should be dead.

The room went silent.

And the phone kept ringing.
