The whole dining room went quiet the moment Ethan asked his question.

“Is it true that three years ago… you almost died?”

My heart stopped beating, I looked up at him my hands were shaking under the table. Across from me Lily’s face turned white, white like paper.

Nobody said a word, nobody even moved. Then Ethan’s mother stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.

“What is going on?” she said. “What hospital? What accident?”

I looked down at my lap, I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to remember that time, and I really didn’t want Ethan looking at me like that. Not with worry, notice now, not after everything.

“Ivy.?” His voice was soft. “Answer me.”

My fists closed tight in my lap.

“Yes,” I said. The word barely came out of my mouth, the room broke into noise.

“What?” His mother’s mouth hung open,  Ethan’s eyes went dark. “What happened to you?”

Before I could say anything else, Lily laughed. It wasn’t her usual sweet laugh this one sounded broken, almost scared.

“Oh my God,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Are we really doing this right now?”

My stomach twisted into a knot, I knew that look on her face. I had seen it before, Lily was about to turn everything around on me. Again.

She crossed her arms “Fine,” she snapped “If we’re bringing up old secrets, let’s bring up all of them.”

I froze in my seat. She smiled at me a cold, cruel smile.

“Ethan, did she tell you where she was before the wedding?” The room went silent, my blood turned to ice.

“Ivy? she said, still smiling “Tell him.”

I couldn’t breathe because I knew exactly what she was doing, she was trying to bury my hospital secret under a new lie. And for years, it always worked on everyone.

Ethan frowned. “What are you talking about?”

Lily turned to him fast. “Three months before the wedding, Ivy was secretly meeting a man.” The room froze again, even Ethan looked shocked. His mother gasped.

“I saw them together,” Lily said.

“No,” I said. The word left my mouth right away.

She ignored me, They met more than once. You should ask her who he was.

My heart was pounding so hard I thought everyone could hear it, and then I understood. She wasn’t trying to save herself anymore, she was trying to destroy me. Again.

The old Ethan would have believed her right away, the old Ethan would have looked at me like I was dirt. He wouldn’t have even asked for proof.

But something in him had changed, because this time he didn’t look at me. He looked straight at Lily.

“Do you have proof?”

Lily froze. For one second, real fear crossed her face.

The room went completely silent, even I couldn’t believe what I just heard. Ethan had asked for proof, not tears, not accusations, Proof.

For the first time in years, Lily looked lost.

“I… I saw them myself,” she said.

“That’s not proof.” His answer came fast, like a knife cutting through the air.

Lily blinked, his mother blinked, I blinked too. Because Ethan Kingsley had just stood against Lily in front of everyone.

The whole room felt different now, something had shifted. Everybody could feel it in their bones.

Lily forced out a laugh. “Since when do you need proof?”

The moment those words left her mouth, I saw her face change. She knew she had made a mistake and Ethan saw it too.

His jaw tightened “Since I realized I’ve been making decisions without it.”

Dead silence.

My heart raced, Lily was losing control and Lily never loses control “Never”

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed everyone jumped a little, he looked down at a new message from that same unknown number again.

Slowly he opened it. I watched his face change — confusion, then shock, then something darker. Real anger.

The room grew tight, like the air itself was holding its breath.

“What is it?” his mother asked.

He didn’t answer her, he looked straight at Lily instead. That look made my skin crawl.

“Lily?”

Her breathing turned shaky. “What?”

His voice went low and calm, Too calm.

“The hospital report says Ivy was admitted with more than one injury.”

Nobody moved.

“It also says someone reported it as an accident.” He paused “And there was a witness.”

The room went dead quiet.

“The witness changed their story two days later.”

My heart dropped to my stomach. No, no, not this Not after all these years. Lily looked like her knees might give out any second, then Ethan asked one simple question, a question that changed everything.

“Why did the witness change their story, Lily?”

“What?” His mother looked lost, glancing between us. My whole body went cold because Ethan wasn’t guessing anymore. He knew something.

Lily stepped back. “I don’t know.”

“You do.”

“Ethan—”

“You do.” His voice got sharper, Stronger, Sure of itself.

Silence again.

Then Lily snapped. “Why are you attacking me?”

Nobody answered because nobody had an answer. Not even her, Right there in front of all of us, she was falling apart. Years of lies, years of tricks, years of pretending, all of it cracking like glass.

Then she said the words that ruined her.

“The stairs were wet that day.”

The moment it left her mouth everyone froze, my heart stopped again. Ethan’s eyes narrowed, slow and dangerous “The stairs?”

Lily’s face went completely white because nobody had said anything about stairs. Not Ethan, not me, not the hospital, not one single person.

But somehow, she knew. Ethan stepped closer, his eyes locked on her. “Interesting.”

Ethan?— Her voice was shaking now.

Nobody said anything about stairs.

The room felt like it was closing in on us, his mother’s face slowly changed as the truth started to sink in. My chest was tight because for the first time, somebody else had noticed too. Somebody else finally saw Lily for who she really was.

Then his phone buzzed one more time, he opened it and everything changed.

His face lost all its color as he stared at the screen, my heart raced.

“What is it?” his mother whispered.

He didn’t answer. He just looked at the screen, then at me, then back at the screen. Finally, he turned the phone around so we could all see.

My breath caught in my throat.

It was an old photo taken three years ago. At St. Mary’s Hospital, I was lying in a hospital bed not moving, Lily stood beside me.

But that wasn’t what made my stomach drop,

standing next to her was a man. A man I had never seen in my life his face was circled in red.

Under the photo, someone had written one sentence. Just one line but it was enough to turn Ethan’s face to stone, enough to make Lily’s legs shake, enough to freeze the blood in my veins.

“Ask Lily why she paid this man to keep quiet.”

Nobody breathed.

Then Ethan slowly turned to look at Lily and for the first time since I had known him, he looked at her the way he used to look at me.

Like he didn’t trust a single word out of her mouth.

I sat up slowly in bed as Ethan continued answering Lily’s call. The room felt smaller all of a sudden, like the walls were closing in on me.He stood by the window, his shoulders stiff while Lily’s voice poured out of the phone.“She’s always been manipulative, Ethan. Don’t let her fool you, Ivy has been pretending to be weak since we were kids.”I lowered my eyes, my hands found the blanket and gripped it tight.Normally, Ethan would have agreed with her.Normally, he would have blamed me too.Normally, he would have reminded Lily that he was trapped in this marriage because of me. • The Billionaire’s Unwanted Substitute Wife    Chapter 6: The First Crack

I didn’t see much of Ethan after what happened in the library.Three days passed we hardly talked. That wasn’t strange — we never really talked, not since our wedding. But something felt different now; every time we passed each other, I caught him looking at me just for a second then he’d look away, like he was trying to figure something out. Maybe about me, maybe about himself.By the fourth morning I couldn’t eat anymore. My mother’s words kept playing in my head over and over, like a song I hated but couldn’t turn off.As long as the Kingsleys are happy, our company will survive.I sat at the table and stared at my plate. Toast, fruit, coffee, Normally I’d force it down anyway. Not today. The food might as well have been sand.I stood up quietly I thought no one noticed. But I was wrong, I’d barely reached the door when Ethan’s voice stopped me cold “You’re not eating?”I turned around so fast I nearly lost my balance. Everyone at the table looked just as shocked as I felt — becaus
