Olivia’s POV

“My mom brought cucumber,” I announced, walking over to where Christian sat perched on the armrest of one of the sofas, with a plate in my hand.

“Here,” I added, nudging the plate of freshly cut cucumbers closer to his chest. “Try some. I have to eat all this alone, and I would reallyy appreciate some help.”

He glanced down at the plate in my hand for a while, his nose scrunched up. Then he shook his head. “Nah, thanks.”

Sighing, I trotted towards the bed with a sullen expression, and sank into it, crunching on the cucumber.

I watched him as he started to pull off his clothes, my mind trailing back to earlier in the day, when he had left the house.

Why had he been in such a hurry? What had happened?

Itching with curiosity, I kicked my legs against the bed stand.

“Are you okay?” I asked, a tinge of concern in my tone.

He said nothing at first, just kept on undoing the buttons on his shirt until the last one, then pulled it off, his jaw twitching the whole time.

Finally, he

Sighing, I rocked back on the bed with hunched shoulders, popping a slice of cucumber into my mouth. As I chewed slowly, a thought suddenly occurred to me, and my eyes lit up with a sparkle.“How about this?” I asked, staring up at him with the best puppy eyes I could manage at that point.“What?” He queried, his brow slightly cocked as he stared down at me.“A baby shower…”He paused, watching me closely, as if considering it.“I mean,” I continued when it seemed like he would disagree, “it would be really nice to throw one, you know? It’ll help let off some steam, especially with all that’s happened lately, and my mom will also get to meet your family.”“So, yeah,” I flipped my hair backwards, “I think a baby shower is just perfect.”He still had that puzzled expression on his face. “A baby shower?”“Yeah,” I mumbled, nodding. “Don’t you know what that is?”“Well,” he sighed, “I might have some ideas about this…baby shower. But I’ve never been to one.”“Not to worry, then,” I breath

Everyone’s gaze was on my face, but I hardly saw anyone, my eyes burning with heated fury, that I barely managed to keep in reins. And Cain, instead of heeding my silent warning, stepped forward, drawing closer to me, a determined glint sparkling in his eyes.“I understand your position, Mr. Christian,” he started in that voice that seemed so off to me, grating on my nerves, “but Mr. Blackwood has given me permission to carry out this search,” he added, nodding in the direction of my office. “So I’m afraid you can’t stop me, or this.”What was it that was so off about him? I could fucking smell it heavily on him, but I couldn’t just pinpoint it.Glaring at him, my chest rose and fell in a choking anger, and I advanced towards him in slow, menacing steps.“I’ll say it just one more time, detective,” I bit out in a quiet voice, my jaw twitching painfully. “Get. Out.”He squared his shoulders again, the smile dissipating from his features. “This search, Mr. Christian,” he started in a co

OLIVIA “So,” the technician took a few steps back from the bed, rubbing her palms together, “you can head back to the waiting room now. The doctor will go over everything in a few minutes.”At her words, Christian stepped forward and helped me to my feet, holding me close.I looked up at him, blinking. “Twins, Christian. We’re having twins.”*********I let out a tired sigh, carefully sinking into the bed.Honestly, I couldn’t tell how I felt about the ultrasound. I was both…happy, and nervous at the same time. Especially after the doctor mentioned I should expect major changes to my body in a few weeks.Christian walked over to me then, handing me a glass of water, and I took it from his fingers with a small, appreciative smile, gulping it down immediately. When it was down to the last drop, I pulled the glass from my lips, and he took it from my hands.Another sigh escaped my lips, and he squatted in front of me, taking my hands in his.“I know you’re scared, Olivia,” he started,

Olivia’s POVI sat in the cold waiting room, next to Christian, whose palms were wrapped around mine, nervous jitters skittering around on my skin, and my insides. His long fingers occasionally caressed mine, and that was the only thing that kept me on the surface. Holding me down. Stopping me from exploding all over in a confetti of nerves. The pungent antiseptic smell that hung in the air here made me sick to my stomach, twisting the knots in the bottom.I exhaled shakily, my fingers pressing into the chair.I felt Christian’s gaze on my face in the next nanosecond, his breath also harsh and uneven.“Are you nervous?” I blurted out, turning my face to look at him, making an effort to stomp on my raging nerves. He nodded, a tautness in his face. Then he let out a sigh. “I can’t figure out why a simple ultrasound is making me this way. Keeping me on tiptoes.” “My heart’s beating like crazy,” he added, lifting my palm to rest flat against his chest, “can you feel it?”I nodded, a small

Olivia’s POVChristian’s brow furrowed into a frown at my words, a blanket of guilt falling over his eyes.Did he forget?Oh. Yes he did.But I couldn’t even blame him. A lot’s been going on recently, and I barely even remembered myself. The alarm I had set earlier had been my reminder.“We could reschedule,” I assured in a soft tone, reaching forward to take his hands, but he shook his head instead, gently pushing my hand to the side and grabbing his shirt off the bed.“We shouldn’t reschedule such an important thing, Olivia,” he replied, his jaw set in a grim line, and I couldn’t help the smile that crept into my lips. He really is sweet. My God.How did I get so lucky with him? Was this a dream?Christian Blackwood not being selfish for once? I would take that any day.“Stay here,” he continued, “I’ll go make arrangements for our transport to the hospital.”As he started to retreat, a question that’s been replaying in my head popped out my lips. “Don’t you get scared?” He paused i

Christian’s POV“I apologize for keeping you waiting,” Mr. Rowan, the private detective, apologized as he walked up to my desk.I glanced at the analog watch on my wrist, my jaw ticking, before I raised my head and gestured him to the seat on the other side of the desk, subtly eyeing the file he held in his hand.“So,” I started, leaning back in the seat and crossing my legs, “what do you have for me? What have you found?”I watched as he flipped the file open and pulled out a ton of photos and papers. All that stuff.Setting the file aside, he started to separate the photos and papers like they were in categories, and I silently admired his ability to do this, being so good at his job, despite his eccentricity. He pushed to his feet then, sliding the first pile of pictures over to me and spreading them out, and as I stared down at the pictures, a frown crept into my face, explicit images filling my vision.“I should warn you,” he started, placing his hands on his lips, “some of them

Christian’s POVA few hours earlier…As the engine died down, I exited the car and slammed the door shut, turning to the imposing edifice that stood there.I whipped out the business card from my pocket, glancing down at it.I’d decided to make a quick stop here before heading over to my grandfather’s, and I silently hoped this decision would be worth my time. The NYPD precinct looked just as I remembered it, and I started towards it, determination in my steps.“Welcome, sir,” a desk sergeant greeted me as soon as I walked in, rising to his feet.“Thank you,” I replied, pulling up to his desk. “I’m here to see a detective Nolan,” I added, my eyes sweeping the space. “He asked me to come in.”He nodded, facing the desktop screen. “Can you tell me why he asked you to come in?” He asked, his fingers rapping against the keyboard.I paused, thinking of the best way to put the response I had in mind.“I believe I was asked to come in, so I could give a statement that might be helpful for a

Christian’s POVI lifted my knuckles and rapped twice on the door, and my grandfather’s voice rang out almost immediately.“Come in.”I pushed the door in and stepped inside the study, glancing around briefly.“I’m glad you arrived swiftly,” he added gesturing me to a seat, and I nodded and sank into it, keeping close to the edge.We sat in silence for a few seconds, and I just stared pointedly at him, waiting to hear the reason he had called me over.“So,” he started after a few more seconds, “you don’t care to know how your brother’s faring? Or Ms. Hales?”He cocked a brow as he asked the question, incredulity etched deep into his face.I leaned back in my seat, keeping my eyes closely trained on his face. “If Michael’s condition has gotten worse, I’d know that, don’t you think?”My grandfather flinched a bit at my tone, his eyes narrowing slightly.“I mean,” I continued, “he’s been bankrolling the press, hasn’t he?”My grandfather shook his head in what seemed to be disbelief. “I f
