chapter Four

I couldn't sleep because of what happened earlier. I received a call from Trent, my high school friend, about some materials concerning our entrance exam. We both chose Bellaris University. The only mistake I made wasn't hanging up the call and opening the door immediately. I thought it was one of the workers before I heard his voice.

My mother particularly warned me about making my husband angry, I just did that today. What should I do? I just have to be extra obedient and not pass my boundaries just like he wanted. 

The following morning, I went out of my bedroom after freshening up to eat breakfast. I met Greg full dressed and about going to work. Sheila, our cook, offered him breakfast, he said he was running late already. I greeted him but he didn't answer and left. 

Sheila served me my food and left. I ate quietly. I've been eating well since I came here and I've been enjoying every bit of the meals. Sheila is actually a nice woman and she's been taking care of me, I don't know why though. I took the plates back to the kitchen and washed them. Sheila met me in the kitchen and scolded me, she told me it wasn't my work and not to try it again. I apologized to her, but I just didn't like being idle. 

I wore my jacket and carried my books and went to the spot I discovered in the garden. I sat down there and read for a while before I slept off. 

The sound of my phone woke me up, and it was "sir" calling.  Why is he calling?

I picked it up immediately. 

" Where are you?" He asked

"I'm at home" I replied

" At home? Sheila just called me to say she couldn't find you anywhere at home" 

" Oh, I'm sorry sir, I am somewhere in the garden reading before I sleep off. I'll go back inside now, thanks for calling sir" I said and hung up. 

I immediately started packing my things to head inside before my phone rang again and it was "sir" calling again.

I picked up the call and he just said coldly " whenever I call you, don't ever hang up on me again" he said and ended the call. 

I went back inside and saw Sheila waiting for me.I apologized to her and gave her my number for next time. After eating, I stayed in the living room watching TV while waiting for Greg to come back home. I waited till around 2am in the morning, yet he isn't back yet. Sheila came earlier nudging to go to sleep but I refused. I slept off around 3 am trying to wait for him. 

When I woke up, I realized I was still on the sofa and everywhere was bright already. I stood up from the sofa but what I was next shocked me, I saw Rose wearing a revealing white nightie. She greeted me and went to the kitchen. I was dumbfounded, what was going on? And where is Greg? I wasn't done asking myself that question before I saw Greg coming down from his room fully dressed. He walked past me without even a glance at me.  I looked back and saw Rose adjusting his tie and gave him a quick peck before he left. 

I felt something in my heart, I didn't know what it was but I knew I wasn't happy. I went to my bedroom to freshen up. I came back downstairs to eat breakfast, I met Rose fully dressed with a food flask with her. She bid me goodbye and left.

Sheila dished my food for me , while she was doing that, I suddenly asked her who Rose was. She was shocked I didn't Know.

"She's our boss girlfriend"

"What? Girlfriend?" I asked again to be sure

" Yes. She's your brother's girlfriend and our madam" she said

But I'm his wife. What is he still doing with his girlfriend? 

"Are you okay? Sheila suddenly asked, sensing my change in mood. 

"I'm fine" I replied smiling.

I ate quietly and went back to my spot in the garden to continue reading. I needed to be amongst the top five students to have access to a full scholarship. I don't want to burden Greg and Nana again. I need a job to support myself. I need a laptop and I need to get a few textbooks but I'm penniless. I don't know whether sir would be happy about me doing a part-time job for now.  As I was busy reading, I started having cramps. Oh no, it's almost that time of the month again? 

I couldn't read because of the pain. It has  always been so intense from the moment I started menstruating. I went back inside the house to get some rest. I met Sheila on my way to my room, she saw me hold my tummy and asked whether I was okay.  I said yes and smiled trying to hide my pain because I didn't want to bother anyone.

I went to my room and slept. I woke up around eight in the evening, and my bed was already stained with blood. I didn't have any money on me and I know Sheila would have left already. I walked out of my room towards the sitting room hoping to see any of the workers outside. I didn't see anyone in sight. Walking back inside, the pain came again and it was very serious this time, I fell on the floor outside holding my tummy. I was in that position for minutes when I heard Greg's car from outside. No one was at the gate, but I saw Mr Noah running towards the gate to open for Greg. Before he got to the gate, he saw me on the floor and started calling me " ma, ma". I shushed him so as not to alert Greg about my condition. I struggled and stood up and walked slowly to my bedroom. I heard Greg asking him why he took long time to open,but he did say anything. 

I went back inside and slept like that till the next morning. Around 6am , my phone rang and it was Sheila asking me to open my door. I stood up and opened my door and saw her with nylon. She gave me a pad and some medicine for cramps.

" Mr Noah called me yesterday night and explained everything to me. Whenever you're not feeling fine , try and speak up. I'm always here to help you" she said

She took my bedspread and some of my stained clothes while she was going.  I thanked her and went to the bathroom to change. 

I came down around 7am and met Greg seated on the dining table fully dressed and eating. I greeted him and sat down to eat. The food Sheila served made me nauseous and I felt like throwing up. I'm also sensitive to food anytime I'm on my period. I didn't want to waste any food, so I managed to take two bites but my stomach couldn't take it. I ran outside and vomited everything. The distance from dining to my room was quite far and I knew I was going to throw up inside the house, so I ran outside. 

Greg saw everything that just happened and I didn't know why he was angry. Sheila came and offered me water. I saw Greg walk towards me and the next thing he asked really made me angry. 

"Are you by any chance pregnant?" 

I looked at him with anger in my eyes and didn't say anything. Before I knew what was happening I heard in say

" Get in the car"

I didn't reply and told Sheila to help me to my room. The next thing I heard was 

" Are you deaf? Are you crazy? I said get in the car!" He shouted and almost all the workers came outside to know what was happening. 

I didn't want to cause more scenes, so I quietly entered his car. Sheila tried to explain things to him but he shut her out and threatened to fire her. I signaled to her not to worry that I'd be fine.

He asked his driver to give him the key and drove himself.……… We were both silent on our way before I heard him mutter something to himself.

"No one is going to carry a bastard in my house"................
