LOGINMeghan’s POVAdrian came through the door so fast it bounced off the wall.He stopped at the foot of the bed. His father's eyes were open, but heavy, and one hand lay on top of the blanket with a thin tube taped to the back of it."Dad.""Adrian." Harlan's voice was almost nothing, a dry scrape. "Come closer."Adrian pulled the chair to the bed and sat. I stayed by the window, where I'd been for an hour, listening to the monitor count."I want to talk to my son alone," Harlan said. He didn't look at me, and I didn't take it personally. "Please.""Of course."I went out and stood in the corridor with my back against the wall. Through the narrow glass I could see Adrian's shoulders, and his father's mouth moving. I couldn't hear a word. I watched Adrian's head drop, then lift, then drop again. It was less than ten minutes. When the door opened, Adrian's face was gray."He wants you to come in," he said."Adrian, if it's private… ""He asked for you." He swallowed. "He said you're the on
POV: AdrianThe room went quiet after Julian called for the vote. I was the only one still standing."That's a serious thing to say about your brother," one of the older members said."It's a serious time," Julian replied. "I'd like to show you why."He nodded towards the folders waiting at each seat. I hadn't seen anyone bring them in. Someone had prepared this before Dad fell. There was no way they could have put it together in the two hours since the ambulance took him away.I opened mine. The first page was a security report from the Atlas building."Last night, Adrian entered a sealed construction site under legal hold," Julian said. "He did it with a woman who has since been suspended from this company. They broke into a locked office, removed documents, and left only when security found them. Our own guards recorded the incident.""I'd call it something else," I said."I'm sure you would." He turned a page. "He had been warned to stay away from that building. He didn't listen.
POV: Adrian"Sit down," I said when Meghan walked in, an envelope pressed against her coat.I had been standing by the window for forty minutes, trying to work out how to tell her. I still hadn't found the words. She sat on the edge of the couch. I stayed standing because I didn't trust my legs."After you left, I went back into the boardroom," I said. "The meeting kept going. Dad wouldn't let anyone leave. He was telling them what to say to the press when he stopped in the middle of a sentence. He put his hand on the table and said he felt strange."Meghan's expression changed."He stood up to close the meeting, and he fell. Two of them tried to catch him. Somebody called an ambulance, and I rode with him. Vivienne came too. I left her at the hospital because I couldn't explain all this over the phone."I paused."He's alive. They took him straight into surgery. It's his heart.""Adrian.""I tried calling you from the ambulance. You didn't pick up.""I was with Elise. Daniel's sister
Meghan’s POVI put my hand flat on the closed folder and made myself ask it again."The photos," I said. "You told me you'd explain how you got them."Elise nodded. She had been waiting for it."They came to me. The night you took them." She turned the laptop slightly so I could see an inbox with one message highlighted. "No name. A throwaway address, no text, only the files. I don't know who sent them, and I didn't ask. I read them and I used them.""Someone sent you my photos.""Someone who could see them, yes."It sat in my stomach. This morning I had checked the folder twice. Nothing was missing, nothing was changed, and still somebody had been watching it."You think I did something wrong," Elise said quietly."I think you did what I might have done." I breathed out. "I just don't know who else is out there, and neither do you.""No." She didn't look away. "That's why I wanted you here, in person, and not on a screen."I pulled my chair closer. "Elise, what did you mean? About so
Meghan’s POVI hadn't touched the bell when the door opened.A woman stood in the doorway with one hand still on the latch. She was tall and thin, with dark hair pulled back, and she looked at me for a long moment before she looked past me at the street."You came alone," she said.I knew the voice before she finished. It was the same rhythm, the same careful pauses, only without the flat metal edge."That was you on the phone.""A voice changer." She stepped back to let me in. "I'm sorry. I couldn't risk you recognizing anything.""You couldn't risk a lot of things, apparently."Something close to a smile crossed her face. "Come in, Meghan. Please."The hallway smelled of old wood and lemon polish. She led me into a small kitchen at the back and gestured to a chair at the table. A laptop sat open there, beside a thick folder and a mug gone cold."Who are you?""My name is Elise." She sat down across from me. "Elise Whitaker. Daniel was my brother. I'm the younger one."I hadn't expec
Meghan’s POVI walked to the end of the corridor and into the stairwell, where nobody could hear me.The message was still on the screen. You're welcome. The unknown number had stopped ringing, and I stared at it for a full minute before I pressed call.It picked up on the first ring. Nobody spoke."Who is this?" I said."Hello, Meghan."The voice was male, or had been made to sound that way. It was too even, flat, with no breath in it. I couldn't guess an age, or even an accent."You sent those photos to the press.""I did.""How did you get them?""That isn't important yet." There was a faint click on the line. "What matters is why. I did it to protect you."I laughed, and it came out wrong. "Protect me? They just voted to suspend me from every project in the company. Vivienne stood up in front of the board and called me a traitor.""Yes. That's the cost, and I'm sorry for it. But it would have happened anyway, only later and with less warning. Now they're busy defending themselves.
