Nina's POV

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring down at my hands. Every few seconds, I looked over at the door, waiting.

Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was Steven holding Lacy, kissing her forehead like she was the most precious thing in the world.

He used to hold me like that. He used to tell me I was his whole life.

I snorted.

“A lying bastard. That's what he is.”

Maybe I felt a little foolish for never seeing this side of him.

A knock sounded at the door.

I instantly closed my eyes for a brief second, wiped all the emotion off my face, and opened them back up, letting my gaze go blank and unfocused. I stared straight at the bedpost.

"Come in," I called out softly.

The door pushed open. Footsteps tapped against the floor, loud and arrogant. I didn't need to see her face to know who it was, but I looked anyway—my eyes fixed slightly past her shoulder.

Lacy walked in, holding a steaming bowl of soup on a small tray. She had a look of disgust on her face. I still remember how this same look had been on her face on the day she had pushed me into the brook.

She walked right up to me, her shoes clicking loudly on the tiles.

"Here's your soup," Lacy said. Her tone was  completely disrespectful, not a single trace of how a real servant would speak. But I ignored.

She held out the tray. I reached out with trembling hands, pretending to search blindly in the air for the handles. Lacy chuckled under her breath, deliberately moving the tray an inch away every time my fingers almost touched it, playing with me like a cat with a mouse.

"Oops. Right here, blindy," she whispered.

My chest burned with rage, but I forced myself to stay calm. I finally placed my hands on the bowl and lifted it onto my lap. The smell of the chicken broth hit my nose.

Lacy leaned down, her face just inches from mine. She looked at my motionless eyes, testing me. I didn't blink or react. I just kept my eyes wide and dead.

Convinced I couldn't see a thing, Lacy let out a nasty, triumphant laugh. She leaned right over the bowl, pulled back her head, and spat directly into my soup.

A thick blob of her saliva landed right in the middle of the hot broth.

"Enjoy your lunch," Lacy sneered, stepping back with her hands on her hips, waiting to watch me drink her spit.

Now I was even more furious.

Two years ago, this woman stole my vision and ruined my life. Today, she was standing in my room, sleeping with my man, and spitting in my food while Steven was on her side. They thought I was a pathetic, defenseless creature they could walk all over forever.

Something inside me snapped. The soft, gentle girl who used to cry in the dark was gone.

I grabbed the heavy porcelain bowl with both hands. Before Lacy could even react, I slammed it onto the floor with all my strength. It shattered.

Hot soup and sharp porcelain shards exploded across the floor, splashing all over Lacy’s expensive leather shoes. She shrieked, jumping back in shock.

"What the hell are you—"

Before she could finish her sentence, I pushed myself off the bed, stepped right over the broken mess, and swung my arm back.

My hand landed on her face with a slap.

My palm hit her cheek so hard my own hand stung. Lacy’s head snapped to the side, and she stumbled backward, crashing into the side table. She grabbed her face, her eyes wide with total disbelief and horror.

"You bitch!" Lacy gasped, her voice shrill.

Well, looks like the facade is off. The maid would not call me that.

The door slammed open, and Steven rushed inside, his eyes wide with panic.

"What happened? What was that noise?"

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the shattered bowl on the floor and Lacy clutching her bright red, swelling cheek.

Steven looked at Lacy, then looked at me. A sudden flash of panic crossed his face. He took a fast step toward me, his voice suspicious.

"Nina... can you see?" Steven asked, his eyes searching my face intently.

Nina's POV The car pulled into the driveway of the Whitestone Pack estate. I stared out the tinted window at the massive stone mansion towering over us. The moment the tires crunched onto the gravel, I started to panic. There was no grand welcome. There were no gentle greetings or time to unpack."We go straight to the hall," Romeo said, his voice flat and commanding as he turned off the engine. He unbuckled his seatbelt, his sharp profile dark against the dim evening light. "The elders are waiting. The bonding ceremony must be completed before nightfall."My throat went bone dry. "Now?""Now," Romeo repeated. He stepped out of the car, walked around to my side, and opened the door. He held out his hand to me.I stared at his broad palm, my pulse racing like a trapped bird. I reached out and placed my trembling fingers in his. This time, I literally gasped when our skins made contact. Nina's POV My mother didn't come to the station to meet me. I had to pay a cab driver with the last bit of cash in my purse to drop me off at my childhood home. When I pushed open the front door, my mother and stepfather were sitting in the living room, shouting at each other over a stack of unpaid bills."You're finally here!" my mother barked, stepping over to me without a hug, without a drop of warmth. She grabbed my arm tightly, her fingers digging into my skin. She tried to drag me inside, assuming I was still blind. I pulled my hand away with a firm grip."Looks like you still have the memory of this place," she sneered, crossing her arms. "Where is your luggage? Why are you dressed like a beggar?""I brought what I could," I said, looking her dead in the eye without a cane or a tremor. My stepfather scoffed from the sofa, spitting on the floor. "A blind brat. You managed to stay useless to yourself and everyone else for two years. You look worse than when I last saw you.""Tha

Nina's POV I zipped my bag shut and hid it under the bed.Years ago, I gave up everything for Steven. I packed my life into a single suitcase, left my hometown, and came to a place where I knew nobody. I had no friends here. No family to run to. I spent two whole years isolated in his house, relying on him for every meal and every step. I gave him my absolute devotion because I thought he was my safe haven. Now I knew the truth. And I was going to go back home and play the sister that ran away. This was my way out, no matter how unpalatable the whole thing looked. Steven knew nothing about the phone call. He knew nothing about my plan to leave. That evening, Steven came into the room while I was sitting by the desk, pretending to feel my way around a book. He walked over and set a stack of papers down near me."Nina, I had Lacy bring up some forms for you to sign later," Steven said, his tone casual.I paused, keeping my face blank. "Lacy? Who is Lacy?"Steven went still for a seco

I think she can see!"My heart thundered in my chest. They were both staring at me, terrified that their sick little secret had been caught out. If I admitted it now, Steven would lock me down, or worse. I wasn't ready to leave yet. I needed to play this right.I let my eyes fill up with instant tears. I blinked, letting them roll down my cheeks, and allowed my shoulders to shake like I was terrified. I stared blankly at the space between Steven's ear and the wall, letting my hands tremble in front of me."Steven?" I sobbed, my voice cracking with pure heartbreak and fear. "Is that you? What's going on?"Steven hesitated. He stepped closer and waved his hand directly in front of my eyes. I didn't flinch. I kept my gaze hollow, letting the tears fall right through his sightline."Nina, why did you drop the soup?" Steven asked, his voice still

Nina's POV I was no longer blind. For two long years, my world had been nothing but endless darkness. I had to rely on Steven for everything. But over the last few days, the heavy fog over my eyes began to thin. The pitch-black void softened into blurred shapes, then into soft sunlight, and finally into clear reality.I stood in the center of my bedroom, turning around slowly as tears of pure relief filled my eyes. I could see the subtle pattern of the wallpaper, the light streaming through the curtains, and the faint reflection of my own face in the mirror. I was going to get my life back.A wave of joy washed over me. All I thought of was Steven. His promises, and how he swore he would take care of me until we could finally stand together at the altar. I couldn't wait to surprise him. I picked up my wooden walking stick, running my fingers over the smooth surface. We were going to burn this stick together. It would no longer be a reminder of the dark times we had survived. Then I
