I only woke up at a reasonable time because Kai came to my room and made me get up. My face felt sticky from my tears. I knew my face was swollen, and that overall I was in rough shape.

But I appreciated my brother for knowing that now is not the time to ask me about it. I could sense his concern, but instead of saying anything, he just asked, “Would you like something more comfortable to wear or more dressy? I’m not sure how far you’re trying to go to impress Apollo.”

Apollo. My mate. I felt like I betrayed him in some way because I spent the entire night crying over some other man.

But it wasn’t just some other man; it was Silas. My best friend... The one person who I never could’ve imagined disappointing me. The one who ultimately let me down and made me feel shattered.

I answer, “Something in between. I want to be comfortable and pretty, but I want to set realistic expectations that I won’t always look the way I looked last night.”

“As you wish, sis,” he responds.

I sit
