Chapter 1

I curled up on my bed, my fingers and knees swollen with frostbite.

I didn't even have the strength to hold a cup. All I could do was wrap myself in the blanket and try to get warm.

Late at night, my mother pushed the door open.

I lifted my head, ready to ask her for the medicine kit.

She walked straight over and pulled the only cashmere blanket away from my bed.

"It's cold tonight. You can handle it. Susie's still young. She can't catch a cold."

I opened my mouth to protest, but she was already walking away and shut the door tight behind her.

I huddled in the corner and shivered through the night alone. For days afterward, no one came to check on me or bring me anything to eat.

By the time the weather cleared, my wounds had festered.

I went to the healing center alone for herbs.

The healer frowned as she bandaged my wounds. "Why did you wait so long? If you'd waited any longer, you could've ruined your hand."

I said nothing and paid the fee.

Susie had sent me a photo.

"Look! Isn't the dress Mom bought me for my coming-of-age ceremony gorgeous?

"Dad says he's throwing me a huge celebration."

In the photo, she wore the pink dress with expensive jewels around her neck, looking every bit the pampered princess.

I couldn't help thinking of my 18th birthday, when my wolf awakened.

No ceremony, no gifts. Just the meat stew Susie hadn't finished.

Even after my wolf awakened, they had already decided what my life would look like: I would stay with the pack, patrol the borders, and protect Susie until she came of age.

Whatever I earned on the side would go to Susie as pocket money.

The thought still left a dull ache in my chest.

Back home, I packed my things and answered the invitation from the Northern Pack.

"I accept. I'll join your pack."

Maeve Holloway, the Luna of the Northern Pack, had heard about my excellent record at the academy and had been trying to recruit me.

She wanted me to serve as an advisor to her heir and help prepare him to take over the pack.

Until now, I'd always turned her down.

But this time, I was finally making the choice for myself.

I had just set my suitcase down when my parents returned with Susie. She came in loaded with gifts and immediately spread them across the living room.

The moment she saw me, she headed straight for me.

"Why didn't you answer my texts?

"Are you upset because Mom bought me my favorite dress?"

She took my hand, her voice sickeningly sweet.

"Once I've worn it a few times, I'll give it to you. Or you can look through everything here and pick out something you like."

She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the table.

My mother's face darkened. "I bought it for you, so it's yours to wear. If you no longer like it, we'll exchange it. Why would you give it to someone else?"

I almost laughed.

Someone else. So that was what I was to them.

My hand was wrapped in gauze, and her grip made it throb with pain.

I pulled free and shook my head. "No, thanks."

I'd spent my whole life wearing Susie's hand-me-downs, even though I was two years older and slightly taller than her.

Nothing ever fit properly.

My pants were always too short, but no one noticed. My shoes pinched my feet so badly that I could barely run in them.

During the spring hunt, I fell behind because of them.

Damon only complained, "Can you stop slowing everyone down? We always have to wait for you."

Then he walked away without even looking back, leaving me behind.

But none of that mattered anymore. Soon, I'd be gone.

My father's gaze fell on my bandaged hand.

"What happened to your hand?"

I laughed coldly. It wasn't that I'd never liked dressing up. No one had ever given me the chance to.My parents had simply decided I wasn't interested without ever bothering to ask. They had never paid enough attention to know what I liked."I don't need it."My mother looked up in surprise. "Why not? Think of it as our way of making it up to you.""I don't need you to make anything up to me. I already have more than enough jewelry. And one more thing. Don't come looking for me again."I was ready to leave, but my mother reached out and grabbed my hand."Serena, are you still angry?"Her eyes were red and glistening with tears, something I'd never seen before."We're family, no matter what. Even if we were wrong back then, even if we neglected you, you can't just cut us out of your life forever."Besides, Susie has been getting worse ever since her awakening failed two years ago. Can't you forgive her and let the past go?"I pulled my hand free. "I'm not angry with anyone. I've just r

Susie was crying on the other end.Her voice trembled. "When are you coming home? I failed my awakening. I can't even bring myself to go back to the academy. I don't have any friends left. Everyone looks down on me.""Not my problem." My voice remained cold."You never treated me like this. You always looked out for me."She was right about that. Whenever someone picked on Susie, I'd always been the first to stand up for her.Once, she and a friend got into an argument over a training ground. As soon as I heard about it, I rushed over to defend her.Her friend attacked me with her claws.I fought back and pushed her to the ground. But instead of defending me, Susie sided with her friend and accused me of being unreasonable. That was when I stopped fighting her battles for her. And now she was calling me because she had no one else to turn to.She continued sobbing. "Come home, please? Mom and Dad worry about you every day. They've barely been sleeping."I didn't believe a word of it.I

My father was furious, but there was nothing he could do.Susie, still struggling to come to terms with her failed awakening, immediately sank back into self-pity. "I failed my awakening, and she gets to run off and be happy with someone else."Why is my life so miserable while everything seems to work out for her?"She burst into tears. My mother pulled her into her arms, her heart aching as her resentment toward me grew. "We have to find her. How could she do something like this!"They went up to my room to look for anything that might tell them where I'd gone. The attic was tiny, with barely enough room for a bed and a few large wooden chests. It didn't even have a desk.I'd spent years doing my schoolwork hunched over those chests. My mother opened one of them. Inside were a few faded, worn-out clothes that Susie had outgrown.I'd spent the past two years wearing those clothes, even though none of them fit properly."Where did these clothes come from?" my mother asked, unable to re

I stayed on the line.My father snatched the phone and demanded, "Who gave you permission to run off up north?!"We told you, the avalanche blocked the roads. We couldn't get to you! And now you're throwing a tantrum over it?"I said nothing, but my silence said everything. My mother took the phone from him. "Come home right now, and we won't blame you. Just apologize to Susie and make her feel better."I couldn't help but laugh bitterly. So they knew Susie's failed awakening wasn't really my fault. They knew it, yet they blamed me anyway. My laughter only made my father angrier."Book a ticket home right now! I'll meet you at the border!"Funny. Now that they wanted me back, they were suddenly willing to come all the way to the border for me. But it was too late. I didn't feel a thing."I'm not coming back." My voice remained calm."If you don't come back, what about Susie? She's locked herself in her room and won't come out!" my mother shouted in the background.I glanced around my n

The next day, I reached the Northern Pack.As soon as I crossed into their territory, I cut off the mind-link with my family.Luna Maeve came to meet me in person. Her eyes immediately fell on my bandaged fingers. "Your hand...""I'm fine."I smiled at her, and she didn't ask any more questions.Instead, she motioned for someone to take my luggage."You're hurt. Don't carry anything heavy," she said softly.I stared at her, caught off guard. For the first time, I realized that someone could hear me say I was fine and still care enough to worry. She gave me the finest guest room in her manor. It was bright and spacious, with silk bedding and fresh air flowing through the room.In all my twenty years at home, I'd never had a room this nice. Only Susie had.For a long moment, I simply stood there and took it all in.That evening, Maeve asked her personal healer to examine my frostbitten fingers. When the bandages came off, we found that the wounds had become infected. The healer frowned.

There was no point explaining myself anymore. All I wanted was my bow back. They would always believe Susie over me. Her feelings came first, her wishes came first, and I had never truly mattered to any of them.Damon came downstairs, took one look at the scene, and immediately assumed I was the one causing trouble."What are you fighting with your sister over this time?" he asked coldly."You're lucky we even let you live in this house."Then he turned his attention to Susie. I ignored him and reached for my bow again. My mother jumped to her feet and shoved me back. "Haven't you caused enough trouble?!"If I'd known you'd grow up to be this selfish, I never would have raised you!"You're making so much trouble over one little thing!"Even the clothes on your back came from your sister. Didn't we tell you? Once she's done with something, you can have it."Her words hit me harder than I expected.I froze, a lump forming in my throat. Even Susie's unwanted hand-me-downs were something t
