Adrian's POV

"Pull harder," I commanded, my voice a low, grated rumble that echoed off the damp stone walls of the ante-chamber. "Or do you intend for my breastplate to split when I stand before the High Council?"

Behind me, the little maid was breathing too fast.

I didn't need to turn around to know she was terrified. I could hear the frantic, pathetic flutter of her human heart rattling against her ribs like a trapped bird. I could hear the strain in her thin muscles, the scrape of waxed leather through iron eyelets, and the brutal bite of friction against her knuckles.

"If I pull any harder, my Lord, the leather will snap," Natalie said, her voice barely higher than a whisper.

She wasn't looking at my face. She never looked at my face if she could help it. Her eyes were glued to my bare spine, terrified to make contact.

"Then let it snap," I retorted coldly. "And I will have the armorer flogged for providing rotten hide. Pull."

A faint boot-scrape sounded behind me as she braced her foot against the heel of my iron greave. With a low, desperate breath, she hauled on the straps with every ounce of weight in her fragile frame.

Clink.

The heavy steel plate cinched tight against my ribs.

I clenched my jaw. Through the thin, worn weave of her servant’s dress, I could feel the radiating warmth of her small body hovering inches behind me. It irritated me. Humans were soft, damp, fleeting creatures, yet her heat felt like a branding iron against my cold skin—a stark, insulting contrast to the corpse-like chill the realm believed my kind possessed.

Outside the heavy, iron-studded oak doors, a war horn wailed across the stone courtyard.

The diplomatic tribunal had arrived. Representatives from three rival human kingdoms had come to demand a blood-pact or declare total war on my border. They were waiting for the monster currently standing unarmored in his own private quarters.

I didn't flinch. I didn't even draw breath.

"Front plate," I ordered.

"Yes, my Lord."

Her skirts rustled against the flagstones as she scurried around my side. I kept my head high, eyes locked on the faint flicker of the chandelier above, pretending she wasn't there. But my dark senses picked up everything: the faint smell of lye soap, the iron-rich sting of sweat on her palms, and the unbearable, suffocating rhythm of her blood pumping through her veins.

She lifted the massive front piece of forged black steel. It was heavy—crafted from iron laced with dark alloy specifically built to absorb sun-blessed blades. It took all of her weak human strength just to raise it over my shoulders.

Then her bare wrist brushed the center of my chest.

I went dead still.

It wasn't just skin touching skin. It felt like a sudden, violent spark of lightning snapping straight into my sternum.

The air in the room instantly thinned, turning thick, heavy, and suffocating.

Touch. A servant had touched me.

Uninvited. Unbidden.

"Your hands are cold, little maid," I said. The smooth, arrogant composure I maintained for the lords slipped, my voice dropping an octave into a dark, rough gravel.

Natalie froze, her hands hovering near my shoulders. "My apologies, Sovereign," she whispered, her gaze dropped low, carefully avoiding my face. "The chambers are damp."

"Look at me."

Natalie's breath caught in her throat. She tried to reach for the side latches, her fingers trembling violently as she fumbled with the iron pins. "The tribunal—"

"I said, look at me."

The word came out as an absolute decree.

Slowly, reluctantly, her chin raised. Her gaze slid up the dark steel plate, over the line of my collarbone, past the sharp edge of my jaw, until her pale eyes locked into mine.

I felt my vision was narrow.

The gold in my irises dissolved, swallowed whole as my pupils blew wide, dark, and unhinged. My throat constricted with a violent, sudden ache. The predator inside me—the blood-hungry beast I spent centuries suppressing—snapped its chains.

My chest heaved. Once. Twice.

I didn't need air to survive, but my lungs forced a sharp, violent intake just to drag her scent deeper into my mouth.

"My Lord?" she murmured, terror spiking sharp and cold in her eyes. She took a tiny half-step backward. "The latch is secured. I only need to tie the upper—"

I didn't think so. The instinct was faster than my royal command.

Before her human eyes could even register my motion, I moved.

A sharp gasp ripped from her throat as I

slammed her backward. Her back struck the cold stone wall with a dull thud, iron armor clanking violently between us.

Before she could draw breath to scream, I slammed my gauntleted hand against the wall right beside her head, trapping her in place. My other hand shot out, my long, pale fingers clamping down tightly over her chin, forcing her face up toward the dim light.

"Sovereign—"

"Be silent," I hissed.

I was inches from her face now. I could hear the violent, wild rhythm of her blood hammering right beneath the thin skin of her neck.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It was deafening. It was an insult. It was an absolute temptation.

I felt my upper lip curl back against my teeth. The sharp, lethal tips of my fangs slid down, extending over my lower lip with an ache that throbbed all the way to my skull. A low, guttural growl vibrated deep within my chest, shaking the iron plate locked between our bodies.

"You are terrified," I whispered, my hot, harsh breath fanning over her small jaw.

"You... you are holding me against a wall," Natalie choked out. She was shaking, her whole body trembling beneath my grip, yet her eyes held a frantic, stubborn spark.

"Release me. The high lords—"

"Do not speak of those fools!" I snarled, my fingers tightening on her jaw until I felt her bone beneath my grip. My dark vision flared red at the edges. "They mean nothing. This kingdom means nothing."

The scent of her pulse was overwhelming. It called to every instinct I had buried under centuries of court politics and cold bloodlines.

I leaned down, dropping my face directly into the crook of her shoulder.

Natalie squeezed her eyes shut, her entire body flinching as she braced for the violent slice of fangs tearing into her jugular. She grabbed uselessly at the cold steel of my chestpiece, her short nails scraping over the dark iron.

"Please," she sobbed softly, the whisper slipping past her lips in a broken breath. "Adrian, please..."

I froze.

The sound of my name—spoken not with title, not with official deference, but in a raw, desperate human plea—struck me like a physical blow.

For a long, agonizing second, the room fell dead silent save for her shallow, frantic gasps.

The razor-sharp tip of my right fang was resting directly against her warm skin, right over her beating vein. Just a fraction of an inch. A single drop of pressure, and I could drink her dry right here on the ante-chamber floor before the tribunal could even sound their second horn.

I didn't bite.

Instead, I dragged in a long, shuddering breath right against her bare throat.

My chest expanded violently against hers, the iron plate crushing her against the stone wall. I inhaled deeply, pulling her scent into my lungs, drinking her in without ever breaking her skin.

A strange, ragged shudder tore through me.

The simple feral hunger in my mind suddenly fractured. The predatory tension in my shoulders flicked, twisting from pure bloodlust into utter, violent confusion.

It wasn't the metallic, copper smell of normal human blood.

It wasn't the stale, cold scent of the living realm.

I dragged my nose slowly up the column of her neck. My breath burned against her skin like liquid fire as I stopped just beneath her ear.

My eyes snapped open, blazing in the dark room.

"What are you?" I rasped, my voice rough, dangerous, and laced with a sudden, dark intrigue that sent a physical tremor through my hands.

Natalie couldn't answer. Her heart was hammering so fast I could feel the vibration through her very skin.

I buried my face deeper into her neck, inhaling her scent again—taking a slow, intoxicated breath that made my entire dark frame tremble against hers.

When I spoke, the low, terrifying growl vibrated directly against her racing pulse.

"Why does your blood smell like sunfire, little maid?”

  • The Blood Empress & Her Mortal King    Chapter 3 THE MIDNIGHT CATACOMBS

Natalie’s POV Three in the morning. The witching hour, when even the Bloodguards on the upper battlements grew heavy-lidded and slow.I moved like smoke through the sub-basement corridors beneath Aethelgard Castle. The damp air tasted of rot, ancient earth, and cold stone. Every breath I took had to be measured, silent, and shallow. If a single shadow shifted out of turn, the vampire sentries patrolling the perimeter would rip my throat out before I could draw my blade. My skin still prickled where Adrian had touched me earlier in his bedchamber.I leaned my back against the wet granite wall, waiting for the heavy footsteps of an iron-clad guard to fade down the hall. In the dark, my mind involuntarily dragged me back to the look in the Blood Sovereign’s eyes when he had cornered me near his bed.“Your heart isn't beating fast enough,” his deep, raspy voice echoed in my memory, so clear it made my pulse spike despite myself. “A nervous maid’s pulse races. Yours is as steady as

Adrian's POVDawn leaked through the arched windows of my bedchamber, painting the black marble floor in streaks of pale gray.Natalie stood near the foot of my massive canopy bed, holding a silver tray with fresh linen and a basin of warm water. She kept her chin lowered, her body locked in that masterclass of fake human submissiveness. She thought I didn't know about the golden blade currently tucked beneath her maid’s apron.I stood in the shadow of the velvet heavy curtains, barely three feet behind her. My dark cloak was half-unbuttoned, and my pulse hammered so violently it rattled my ribs.I shouldn't have been this close. I was the Blood Sovereign, a warlord who had slaughtered armies without blinking. Yet here I was, standing in the dark, driven half-mad by the sheer physical presence of my own assassin. She shifted slightly to set the basin down. The motion stirred the air between us.Her scent exploded into my nostrils—an overwhelming burst of sun-warmed jasmine, c
