Chapter 1 The Blood on the Silk

Adrian’s POV

"Natalie..."

Her name broke from my chest in a low, ragged rasp that sounded entirely un-kingly.

I pressed the soft silk of her discarded lace chemise to my mouth, inhaling deeply. Lavender. Cold rain. And beneath it all, that sharp, intoxicating heat that was entirely her own—a scent that had been quietly unraveling my sanity for three months.

My hand tightened around the delicate fabric, pulling it taut across my lap as a shudder tore through my body. The dark, soundless sanctuary of my private quarters offered no defense against the image of her. Her downcast hazel eyes. The delicate curve of her throat when she poured my morning tea. The tiny, maddening pulse beating rapidly right beneath her collarbone whenever I stepped too close.

I dragged the silk across my jaw, my fangs aching, extending against my lower lip until the sharp tip nearly pierced my skin. The hunger clawing inside me wasn't just for blood—It was for her. Every inch of her.

I wrapped my hand around my dick, dragging it up and down, closing my eyes, my hips shifting against the edge of the mahogany desk as the torment reached a fever pitch. I was Adrian Vance, the Blood King, ruler of the Night Realm, slayer of five hundred coven rebels—and here I was, brought to my knees by a nineteen-year-old human maid who couldn't even look me in the eye without her hands trembling.

If my generals saw me right now, inhaling the stolen linen of a servant like a starving dog, they would challenge my throne before sunrise.

Let them try. I’d tear their throats out with my bare teeth and come right back to this room, right back to her scent.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

A soft, hesitant knock echoed against the heavy oak doors of the inner sanctum.

My eyes snapped open, my crimson vision sharpening instantly in the darkness. I shoved the silk into the inner pocket of my coat, my body rigid, my breath coming in ragged, shallow bursts as I fought to force my fangs to retract.

"Enter," I commanded, my voice cold, smooth, and stripped of the raw desperation that had consumed me seconds before.

The heavy door creaked open.

It was her.

She stepped into the dim, candlelit chamber carrying a heavy silver tray. She wore the plain charcoal dress of the palace staff, the high white collar buttoned tightly to her chin. Her dark hair was pinned back in a neat, modest knot, but a few stray curls framed her pale face, clinging to the faint sheen of sweat on her neck.

My blood roared in my ears.

She didn't look at me. She never looked at me if she could help it. Her eyes remained glued to the stone floor as she navigated the expanse of the room, her small slippers making virtually no sound against the marble.

"Your Majesty," she whispered, her voice like soft velvet over ice. "The grand lords have departed the council chamber. I brought the mulled blood-wine you requested."

"Set it on the side table, Natalie," I said softly, staying seated behind the shadow of my desk so she wouldn't see the heavy, unsteady rise and fall of my chest.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

She moved toward the pedestal table near the arched balcony windows. I watched her every movement with the terrifying focus of a predator. Every muscle in her back was coiled tight. She was terrified of me. They all were. But with Natalie, her fear felt different—it was controlled, almost deliberate, like a shield she carefully held up between us.

As she reached for the crystal decanter to pour the dark liquid into my goblet, a sudden gust of wind slammed open the balcony doors.

The heavy velvet curtains billowed violently. The silver tray rattled.

Natalie gasped, her hand jerking in surprise.

Clatter!

The heavy crystal decanter slipped from her fingers. Deep crimson wine splashed across the air like a spray of fresh arterial blood, soaking instantly into the front of my white, silver-embroidered ceremonial cloak. The crystal smashed onto the marble floor, shattering into a hundred glittering shards.

Silence descended upon the room like a heavy anvil.

Natalie froze. Her face turned ghost-white, all the color draining from her lips.

In the High Court of the Night Realm, spilling anything on the King’s ceremonial robes was considered an act of treason—punishable by immediate execution. A maid had been flayed alive two decades ago for spilling ink on my father's boots.

Natalie knew the law. I could hear it in the sudden, violent acceleration of her heart.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It hammered against her ribs, erratic and frantic, a rhythm so sweet it made my teeth ache.

"I—I am sorry!" she gasped, dropping to her knees instantly among the sharp shards of glass. Her voice cracked with genuine terror. "Your Majesty, forgive me! I was careless, I—"

"Natalie, stop," I barked.

She didn't listen. Panic had taken hold of her. She began frantically picking up the broken glass with her bare hands, her head bowed so low her forehead nearly touched the wine-stained floor. "I will clean it, I will pay for the robe, please, I beg of you—"

"I said stop!"

Before she could drag another piece of glass across the stone, I moved.

I didn't walk; I blurred. In less than a second, I crossed the fifteen feet of space between us.

Natalie gasped as my hand shot out, catching her delicate wrist with terrifying, supernatural speed, just inches before her palm landed on a jagged crystal edge.

Her wrist felt tiny in my grip, her skin soft and scalding hot against my icy touch. The moment my fingers locked around her, a violent jolt of electricity shot up my arm, settling straight into my gut. My crimson eyes flashed in the dark, my pupil dilating until the red consumed everything.

"Look at me," I growled, my voice thick and dangerous.

She stiffened. Slowly, agonizingly, she tilted her head up.

Our eyes met. Hazel against crimson.

Up close, the scent of her hit me like a physical blow. It was overwhelming. The terrified heat radiating off her skin made my instincts scream at me to drag her up, press her against the cold stone wall, and bite into her throat until I swallowed every drop of life she possessed.

Restrain yourself, I snarled internally, locking my jaw so hard my teeth ground together. Do not break her.

"You're trembling," I murmured, my grip on her wrist softening, transitioning from a harsh restraint to something dangerously close to a caress.

"You... you are going to kill me," she whispered, her lips parting as she struggled for air. Her hazel eyes were wide, glittering with unshed tears.

"Is that what you think of me?" I asked, lowering myself until I was kneeling in the spilled wine right in front of her. The crimson liquid soaked into my trousers, but I didn't care. I couldn't care about anything other than the girl trembling in my hands.

"The law..." she swallowed hard, her heart pounding so fast I wondered if her mortal chest could take the strain. "The law says blood or wine spilled on the King's cloak must be washed out in the offender's blood."

"The law is mine to make," I growled softly. "And mine to break."

Keeping her wrist pinned gently in mid-air, I used my free hand to reach down and cradle her trembling fingers. I inspected her small hand, looking for cuts. A tiny bead of blood sat on the pad of her thumb—a microscopic slice from a shard she had grabbed.

The smell of her blood filled the space between us.

It wasn't human.

My heart slammed against my ribs. I froze, every nerve in my immortal body snapping into sharp alert.

I inhaled subtly, catching the deep undertone of that single drop of blood. Beneath the scent of skin and sweat was something sharp, ancient, and blindingly bright—a scent that hadn't existed in this realm for three hundred years.

Solar blood.

The blood of the extinct Sun Coven. The very rebels my bloodline had hunted to the edge of the earth.

My eyes narrowed as I stared at her pale, frightened face. She was suppressing it. She was holding her breath, intentionally trying to slow her heart rate, trying to hide the true nature of her life force from me. But that tiny cut had betrayed her.

She didn't know I had smelled it. She thought I was just staring at her thumb.

A dark, dangerous thrill coiled in the bottom of my stomach. My sweet, quiet, innocent little maid... was a survivor of the enemy coven. A wolf hiding in my lamb's fold.

I brought her hand closer to my face. I felt her entire body go rigid as I lowered my lips to her thumb. I lapped the tiny bead of blood off her skin with the tip of my tongue.

A violent, scorching heat exploded across my tongue. God, it was divine. It tasted like sunlight and melted gold. It nearly drove me out of my mind.

Natalie let out a soft, choked gasp, a shudder running through her frame as my tongue stroked her thumb.

"No cuts," I lied softly, pulling my mouth away, though my thumb remained resting against her pulsing wrist. "You're whole."

"Your Majesty... please," she whispered, her voice laced with a desperate, pleading edge that almost sounded like desire. "Let me clean this."

"Leave it," I said, forcing myself to stand up, breaking the physical contact before I lost the last thread of my sanity and dragged her into my bed. "The servants will clear the glass in the morning. Go to your quarters, Natalie."

She scrambled to her feet instantly, smoothing down her ruined apron, her chest heaving. She kept her head lowered, but I could feel the sheer relief radiating off her—and something else. Suspicion.

"Thank you, My King," she murmured, bowing low.

She backed out of the room hastily, her skirts rustling, never turning her back to me until she reached the heavy doors. When the oak finally clicked shut behind her, the silence returned, heavier and colder than before.

I stood in the centre of the dark room, my blood burning, the taste of her sun-drenched blood still lingering on my lips.

I moved to the window, watching the outer courtyard below. A few moments later, her small figure emerged into the moonlight, hurrying across the cobblestones toward the servants' wing.

She stopped in the shadow of the eastern archway, looking around frantically to ensure she was unobserved.

I leaned against the stone frame, hiding in the dark, watching her every move with supernatural clarity.

Natalie reached beneath the hem of her apron. She didn't adjust her dress or wipe her hands. Instead, she reached into a hidden pocket sewn into her petticoat and pulled out a small, curved object wrapped in dark leather.

She unwrapped it slightly under the pale light of the moon.

A blade.

Not a kitchen knife. A ceremonial dagger made of pure, glowing sun-gold—the crest of the Solar Coven forged into its hilt. The very weapon designed to pierce a vampire king's heart.

She held it tightly against her chest, her knuckles white, her eyes darting back up toward my window with a cold, lethal intensity that replaced every trace of her earlier fear.

She wasn't just hiding her bloodline.

She was here to kill me.

A slow, terrifying smile spread across my face in the dark, my fangs slipping fully down over my lower lip.

"Try it, my sweet little sun," I whispered into the empty night, my fingers tracing the stolen silk chemise in my pocket. "I dare you.”
