Chapter 1

"You materialistic woman, who gave you permission to buy a milkshake? There's free plain water to drink, yet you insist on getting a milkshake? What a waste of money!"

Leah Doherty was the mother of my boyfriend, Jonathan Jenson. Upon seeing the milkshake in my hand, she was absolutely furious with me and went off the rails.

I was utterly dumbfounded at her sudden outburst.

What did I do? It was just a milkshake.

Besides, I had been working the entire day and was exhausted. Was there any issue with me rewarding myself with a delicious beverage?

Before I could say anything, Leah snatched the drink from my hand and dumped it in the trash bin.

"All you know is to waste money on such drinks. You're not the least bit frugal or good at running a household. In fact, you're nothing like a proper, virtuous woman!"

I was so enraged by her action that a harsh laugh escaped my lips.

"I bought this milkshake with my own money. What, can't I even have the freedom to do that? Besides, are you implying that you're virtuous and frugal? In that case, what's with the branded bags you carried around every day? If you really wanted to manage the household finances well, you could always just use a plain canvas bag!"

My words caused Leah to freeze momentarily before she replied, "As if I'm the same as you! I'm spending my son's money!"

I couldn't help but find her words hilarious.

"The money your son spends is also my money."

"What do you mean, yours? You're dating my son, which makes all that money his! What right do you have to spend that money without asking for our permission first?"

She slammed a hand on the table in fury, subconsciously raising her voice.

At that, I turned to look at Jonathan, who was playing a game on the couch, in hopes that he would make her see reason.

"Jonathan, could you talk to her?"

I was sure he would speak up on my behalf. After all, we'd been dating for over a decade, and he had always been very good to me.

Back in high school, I was ostracized and picked on by the other students because of my poor background. Someone even framed me for stealing money, and after that, everyone treated me coldly. Jonathan was the only one who believed I was innocent.

Not only had he stepped forward in my defence to clear my name, but he had even comforted me with a milkshake. After that, he would often bring breakfast for me or give me snacks.

After we got together, we agreed to go to the same university. Every time I had a conflict with someone else, Jonathan would stand on my side without any hesitation.

He was like a ray of light, constantly by my side as he illuminated the dark moments of my life.

That was why, when he lost his job, I offered for him to move in with me.

Knowing he'd be feeling down, I showered him with good food and drink, even gave him my money to spend. All in all, I treated him almost like a deity.

It wasn't long after that that Jonathan brought his mother over to live with us, without even asking me first. We got into an argument because of it, but he explained that she simply wanted to take better care of us. Eventually, the issue faded into obscurity.

Leah knew nothing about taking care of others, and I kept getting this feeling that she was inexplicably hostile toward me. Still, she was Jonathan's mother, so I decided it might be better for him to talk sense into her.

However, what came out of Jonathan's mouth next had me so shocked that I stood rooted to the spot in astonishment.

"Cassie, my mom is right. Since you're my girlfriend, naturally, that money belongs to me."

I was stunned that Jonathan would side with his mother when she was clearly the one out of line.

Was this still the same young man I remembered? The one who was warm, gentle, and understanding?

In the past, he had always been biased toward me and would spoil me unconditionally.

"What sort of twisted logic is that? Why should the money belong to you just because we're together?" I snapped somewhat unhappily, frowning.

Jonathan continued speaking as though he hadn't noticed my dark expression. "Hasn't it always been like that since ancient times? A woman listens to her father before marriage, and once she's married, that authority goes to her husband. Isn't it only normal for a woman to be virtuous, proper, and manage a household well?

"If you ask me, you've been watching too much brainrot on the internet! That's why you've now become so materialistic and vain."

I thanked Michael before saying with a smile, "That wouldn't have happened because I trust you."Jonathan took in our interaction and seemed to realize something, sending him off into a rage."What? Lying in wait? You… were working with the police!""Of course. Did you seriously think I was that stupid that I wouldn't take any precautions? That I would simply let myself get kidnapped and threatened?" Sneering at Jonathan, I went on, "I'll be honest with you. Ever since I saw you acting suspiciously around my house through the surveillance footage, I've been on my guard. I knew you definitely wouldn't let things go, so I went to the police."They placed a tracker on me and also sent some officers to protect me in secret, just in case anything happened to me. All this was done to set up a trap—and you walked right into it.'Jonathan was like a feral dog. One should avoid provoking him, but if one did, then the only option was to beat him dead. Otherwise, there would come a day whe

"Who's in a relationship with him? We broke up long ago!" Rolling my eyes, I handed the audio recording on my phone to Michael. "Officer Sanders, I want to press charges for assault and defamation! The recording on this phone is my evidence!"Michael nodded and had the other officers take Jonathan back to the police station, completely ignoring his wails of protest.I went down to the police station as well so that they could take my statement. In the end, the evidence I submitted was enough, and Leah received a verbal warning and was reprimanded for spreading malicious rumors. As for Jonathan, he was sentenced to two months in jail for assault.Right before he was taken away by the guards, I didn't miss the icy murderous look shining in his eyes.…After Jonathan was imprisoned, Leah started spending her days staking out at my house. "Hear that, Cassie?" Leah's eyes lit up at Mr. Smith's words, and she threw me a smug smile. "You know, it's not like you're completely out of options. "All you have to do is get back together with Jon, give the house to us as an apology, and transfer us a monthly allowance. Do that, and I'll stop causing a fuss. You won't have to be fired too!"Jonathan also took this opportunity to pressure me."Cass, what are you waiting for? Just agree already! Mom is giving you a chance here! You can always just earn more money, but without a job, you'll have nothing."After listening to them, I sneered in my mind, "Hah! From the way they're talking, should I be grateful toward them? How ridiculously shameless! This is the first I've ever seen someone sound so righteous when they're the ones in the wrong!""Why should I agree?" I retorted. Leah's expression darkened into a fierce scowl at my words."You won't, huh? Fine! Then you can just wait to be fired! Once you're fired and everyone k

The next time I saw Jonathan and Leah, it was at my company. That day, I went to work as usual, only to hear a commotion coming from downstairs. Once I got closer, I discovered that it was Jonathan and Leah kicking up a fuss outside the company building. They were holding up a banner that read, "Cassie Yowley is a materialistic gold-digger who abandoned her boyfriend and seized his house!"With tears streaming down her face, Leah started spreading lies about me."Cassie Yowley, an employee at your company, is nothing but a vain, greedy, and materialistic gold-digger! Not only was she promiscuous and abandoned my son, but she even forcefully took his house and kicked us out! Now, we can only live on the streets!"If such a woman can be an executive here, then your company mustn't be a very good one! Who knows? She might even be involved with the boss, and precisely because she sold her body, she was able to attain such a high position!"Beside her, Jonathan added his two cents."

Was there no end to Jonathan and Leah's brazenness? They had been living off of me for so long, yet before they left, they were demanding more money? Did they seriously have no sense of shame? When I remained silent, Leah assumed that it was because I wanted to refuse, and the smile on her lips widened."If you refuse to pay up, then we won't leave."With that, she made as if to move her luggage back into the house.Ah, so that was what she was planning. Whether I broke up with Jonathan or not, they intended to come out on top either way. They sure had it all figured out, didn't they? Too bad for them, I wasn't willing to let them have their way.I swiftly took out my phone, saying, "You just reminded me that there really is a need for a breakup fee…"Leah's eyes lit up before she quickly showed me her bank account. However, my next words caused the smile to freeze on her face."But the one who should be paying it isn't me. Instead, it's you! You've been living off of my mon
