Chapter 5

I ignored Leah after that and patted the locksmith's shoulder, signaling him to go ahead.

Once the door was open, I was definitely kicking that bitch Leah out of the house.

As the sound of the lock-picking grew louder, Leah finally opened the door, though with extreme reluctance.

When she spotted the nosy neighbors who had gathered around, she instantly went all out and turned on the theatrics.

"Oh, is there any justice in this world? This future daughter-in-law of mine sure is something! Not only is she trying to break the lock, but she's even thinking of taking my house for herself!

"Everyone, I've lived here for years, and you all have seen that for yourself! You should know just who this house belongs to!"

Her words had the neighbors nodding as they erupted into chatter.

"That's right. Leah has always lived here, so this must be her house."

"That young woman has such a pretty face, but who would've thought she's this vicious? She's even set her sights on her future mother-in-law's home! Who would dare marry such a woman? She's nothing but a troublemaker!"

Some neighbors even felt indignant on Leah's behalf and offered suggestions.

"Leah, don't be scared! If she won't stop, you should just call the cops! She's caught in the act, and we can all be your witnesses!"

"Right! You can't just let her off easy! Today, she's breaking the lock to seize your house; who knows what she'll do tomorrow? She might throw you and Jon out of the house!"

Leah's lips curved into a smirk as everyone sided with her. Using a voice so soft that only the two of us could hear, she said, "Cassie, be a good girl. Apologize for your actions and unfreeze our card, and I'll stop this. Otherwise, I'll really call the cops—"

"Then call them."

I cut Leah off before she could finish.

Leah flushed bright red in anger when she noticed how calm I appeared.

"Fine! You're the one who told me to do it, so don't you regret it!"

It didn't take long for the police officer to arrive. Leah immediately accused me of trespassing and destroying her private property.

"Officer, hurry up and arrest her! This woman is the worst!"

The neighbors were also pointing accusing fingers at me as they loudly proclaimed themselves as Leah's witnesses.

I spent most of the day at work and would only come back home at night to sleep. Since I wasn't around most of the time, it was only natural that my neighbors didn't recognize me.

Meanwhile, Jonathan and Leah had nothing better to do and were constantly in the house. Thus, the neighbors were more familiar with them, so it wasn't surprising that they would side with the mother-son duo.

The officer didn't immediately conclude the case andturned to ask me, "Is that what happened?"

Shaking my head, I responded, "Of course not. This house belongs to me, and the one trying to forcefully claim it is her."

Leah seemed to have expected I would say that, for a sly gleam appeared in her eyes.

"What proof do you have that this house belongs to you? You don't even have the key to the front door, and the neighbors don't recognize you either. How could you possibly be the homeowner?"

The neighbors instantly agreed with her.

"Leah's right! We've never even seen you before. Just who are you?"

"You don't even have the house key, yet you still claim you're the owner? How ridiculous!"

"Seriously, just take her away already! This is just too embarrassing!"

No wonder Jonathan and Leah had been acting so strange the past few days—they had been laying a trap for me. Thankfully, I had made necessary preparations.

As Leah was urging the officer to take me away, I smirked coldly.

"Who said I didn't have proof?"

I thanked Michael before saying with a smile, "That wouldn't have happened because I trust you."Jonathan took in our interaction and seemed to realize something, sending him off into a rage."What? Lying in wait? You… were working with the police!""Of course. Did you seriously think I was that stupid that I wouldn't take any precautions? That I would simply let myself get kidnapped and threatened?" Sneering at Jonathan, I went on, "I'll be honest with you. Ever since I saw you acting suspiciously around my house through the surveillance footage, I've been on my guard. I knew you definitely wouldn't let things go, so I went to the police."They placed a tracker on me and also sent some officers to protect me in secret, just in case anything happened to me. All this was done to set up a trap—and you walked right into it.'Jonathan was like a feral dog. One should avoid provoking him, but if one did, then the only option was to beat him dead. It all made sense now. This was Jonathan's way of getting revenge, his actions deliberately done to harass me.Unfortunately, I didn't have enough evidence to have him convicted of anything serious, so calling the cops on him would be pointless.I massaged my throbbing temples in frustration. "Who's in a relationship with him? We broke up long ago!" Rolling my eyes, I handed the audio recording on my phone to Michael. "Officer Sanders, I want to press charges for assault and defamation! The recording on this phone is my evidence!"Michael nodded and had the other officers take Jonathan back to the police station, completely ignoring his wails of protest.I went down to the police station as well so that they could take my statement. In the end, the evidence I submitted was enough, and Leah received a verbal warning and was reprimanded for spreading malicious rumors. As for Jonathan, he was sentenced to two months in jail for assault.Right before he was taken away by the guards, I didn't miss the icy murderous look shining in his eyes.…After Jonathan was imprisoned, Leah started spending her days staking out at my house. "Hear that, Cassie?" Leah's eyes lit up at Mr. Smith's words, and she threw me a smug smile. "You know, it's not like you're completely out of options. "All you have to do is get back together with Jon, give the house to us as an apology, and transfer us a monthly allowance. Do that, and I'll stop causing a fuss. You won't have to be fired too!"Jonathan also took this opportunity to pressure me."Cass, what are you waiting for? Just agree already! Mom is giving you a chance here! You can always just earn more money, but without a job, you'll have nothing."After listening to them, I sneered in my mind, "Hah! From the way they're talking, should I be grateful toward them? How ridiculously shameless! This is the first I've ever seen someone sound so righteous when they're the ones in the wrong!""Why should I agree?" I retorted. Leah's expression darkened into a fierce scowl at my words."You won't, huh? Fine! Then you can just wait to be fired! Once you're fired and everyone k

The next time I saw Jonathan and Leah, it was at my company. That day, I went to work as usual, only to hear a commotion coming from downstairs. Once I got closer, I discovered that it was Jonathan and Leah kicking up a fuss outside the company building. They were holding up a banner that read, "Cassie Yowley is a materialistic gold-digger who abandoned her boyfriend and seized his house!"With tears streaming down her face, Leah started spreading lies about me."Cassie Yowley, an employee at your company, is nothing but a vain, greedy, and materialistic gold-digger! Not only was she promiscuous and abandoned my son, but she even forcefully took his house and kicked us out! Now, we can only live on the streets!"If such a woman can be an executive here, then your company mustn't be a very good one! Who knows? She might even be involved with the boss, and precisely because she sold her body, she was able to attain such a high position!"Beside her, Jonathan added his two cents."

Was there no end to Jonathan and Leah's brazenness? They had been living off of me for so long, yet before they left, they were demanding more money? Did they seriously have no sense of shame? When I remained silent, Leah assumed that it was because I wanted to refuse, and the smile on her lips widened."If you refuse to pay up, then we won't leave."With that, she made as if to move her luggage back into the house.Ah, so that was what she was planning. Whether I broke up with Jonathan or not, they intended to come out on top either way. They sure had it all figured out, didn't they? Too bad for them, I wasn't willing to let them have their way.I swiftly took out my phone, saying, "You just reminded me that there really is a need for a breakup fee…"Leah's eyes lit up before she quickly showed me her bank account. However, my next words caused the smile to freeze on her face."But the one who should be paying it isn't me. Instead, it's you! You've been living off of my mon
