Chapter 30

John leads me back to the house. Alpha George ordered us to go back to the house.

He said that he's sending more guards to patrol the borders. He said once we made it to our house to let him know, he'd send out a mind link to alert the pack.

Once we made it to our house. John quickly locked the doors and closed all the blinds. He said that we didn't want any rogues from the woods looking in and spotting me.

Once everything was secure, John's mind linked to Alpha George and told him we had made it safe here, and the house was basically on lock down.

Then Alpha George sent out the mind link alert.

All wolves must make it back to their houses now, all store owners must close down shops and get home now. Rogues have been spotted in our territory. All wolves and pack members, besides those on patrol or the guards, must be inside at all times. This is no warning. Remain calm as you do so, for panicking will not help. I will let you know when it's safe to go back outside.

John sat down. " You should rest," said John.

" Rest? How can I rest when I have the most dangerous rogue after me? " I say.

" I wish I could give you an answer, but I can't," he says.

" John, I don't understand why this rogue would be after me. I'm small and not that great a fighter. What's so special about me that makes this rogue want to capture me?" I say.

" Well, you are the bête's daughter," says John.

his son. Your next in line for the bête. I'm not. Why am I the one the rogue is after?" I say.

" I don't know. I don't want to talk about this anymore. The more we talk about this, the more you're going to freak out. So sit and relax for once," says John.

I sigh and walk forward. I do sit, but I refuse to relax.

I have the most dangerous rogue after me for a reason I have yet to find out. I'm almost scared to find out why.

John and I watched TV for a little. Well, it's more like he watched and I pretended.

I have too much on my mind. The note keeps running through my head.

I had to tell Connor everything it said. Our mate bond is pretty strong.

I can almost sense him when he's close to the house.

I want him to know about the note now, but I'll have to try and sneak out tonight to tell him.

Tasha doesn't even know about it. I'll have to tell her, Clayton and Cassandra as well.

Tonight is going to be a busy night. Soon I can't sit anymore. I look at the clock and see that the time is one.

" I'm going upstairs to clean for a while," I say.

He looks skeptical of me, being out of his sight.

He nods anyway though. I hurried up the steps. As I made it to my room, I heard the small sound of someone on my bed.

I don't think twice before opening the door because I know exactly whose scent I smell.

There sitting on my bed wrapped up in one of my blankets is my mate.

I closed the door quickly and locked it before turning to look at him.

" What are you doing here? John could smell your scent and report you or, worse, kill you," I say.

" I got that covered. I figured my scent would be masked if I covered myself up with something of yours that had your scent all over it. That way he'd think it was only you and not me." He replied quietly, so John wouldn't hear him downstairs.

I walk closer. "OK, you answered that part, now answer the first part," I say.

He nods. " I spotted more rogues this morning. I killed them. Well, Clayton, Cassandra and I did. Before we could kill the last one, however, he said it doesn't matter how many rogues die, they'll just keep coming till the boss comes in three days, unless the pack gives the bête's daughter to him themselves. I knew they were talking about you and I had to make sure you were safe," says Conner.

I sighed. " They killed a member of the pack and left a threatening note." I told him everything the note said, and I can tell once I was finished by the look on his face he was trying not to let a growl out.

" Connor. He's going to come after me himself. What if he does capture me or what if the pack hands me over to him?" I say.

" I promise you here and now, Amber. I am never EVER going to let that happen. I'll protect you with my life, my freedom if I have to. I'll do anything as long as it means your safe," says Connor.

I sat down next to him and he hugged me. " Plus, I don't think your pack would ever do that to you. I saw the way your brother was outside your house walking you home. Your dad's the bête and your brother is next in line. They wouldn't do that," says Connor.

" What if it all depends on what's best for the pack, and they have no choice? What if Alpha George orders it to happen?" I say, looking at the floor.

Connor moved his hand and to my chin and gently moved my head to look at him.

He gently ran his thumb over my jaw as he spoke.

" That's never going to happen. Even if Alpha George ordered it, it would kill your father for having to follow orders, but I know for sure your brother would fight for you, and I've seen the way Alpha's son Kurt is around you. If it has something to do with you being in danger, he'll fight for you. By the way he acts, it's like you're a sister to him," says Connor.

I smiled. " Thanks Connor. I'm glad you're on my side with everything," I say.

" It's my job to protect you, Amber, and even if we weren't mates, I'd still protect and fight for you," says Connor.

He then gently pulled my head forward as he leaned in, and our lips connected in a small kiss.

He then laid back and had me lie with him.

I was tired and Connor had me sleep.

Today has been a busy day already and these next couple of days are going to be more busy than ever before. So the best thing to do now is sleep.

Just as I was nearly asleep, Connor kissed my head gently before whispering something into my ear.

" I love you Amber."

I heard what he said, and before I could respond I was out.
