Chapter 1

Kaycee's POV

“Kaycee, why are you paying for the purchase yourself?”

My brother, Cory Tuttle, pressed my phone down before I could tap it against the machine.

“Mikayla’s used bedding doesn’t have a hole or anything. What’s your issue?”

I swatted his hand off with composure.

“Since the sheets are in such good condition, Mikayla can take them to school.

“I’m buying the set of blue bed linens with my own money. I’m not spending money from the family’s budget.”

Following a soft beep, the transaction was successful.

Cory froze while our mother, Tracey Tuttle, grimaced.

“Why are you so unappreciative? Mikayla only offered you her old one because she was trying to save you money.”

Mikayla Tuttle tugged Mom on the sleeve, her eyes welling up.

“Don’t be mad at Kaycee, Mom. It’s all my fault. I should’ve just given her my new bedding.”

Ben Cross approached and took the heavy shopping bags from Mikayla’s hands.

“Kaycee, it’s just a set of sheets. Must you make everyone upset?”

I looked at my childhood friend, the man who had sworn to be my only knight in shining armor.

Somewhere down the line, Ben’s attention had shifted to Mikayla.

I held onto the bag with the blue bedding set.

“All I wanted was a fresh, clean set of sheets.”

Not giving them any more attention, I walked out of the store.

On the way home, Ben was behind the wheel.

As always, I headed for the front passenger seat. My hand reached for the handle.

Cory pulled me back.

“Take the back seat.

“Mikayla gets a little motion sick, so she should sit in the front.”

I paused and glanced at Mikayla.

Mikayla clutched her chest, her head resting on Tracey’s shoulder.

However, I recalled her chatting and laughing with Tracey in the back seat while munching on a bag of chips.

Ben rolled down the car window, his voice tender.

“Just take the back seat, Kaycee. There’s more room back there anyway. You can kick back and relax.”

Without a word, I withdrew my arm and opened the door to the back seat.

It was cramped in the back.

Cory, Tracey, and I were squeezed in the back row.

Tracey edged forward, wrapping her arms around Mikayla, while Cory kept reaching to hand her tissues.

Shoved into the corner by the window, I was basically stuck against the frigid car door.

The streetlights outside the window fleeted past.

Back in seventh grade, I ranked first in school.

I sprinted home with my report card, hoping to get a hug from Tracey.

However, Mikayla was running a slight fever that day.

The entire family fussed over her the whole night as she lay in bed.

My report card was left on the coffee table, where it ended up soaking up grease beneath a takeout box.

Since then, I had learned to keep my grades in check.

I kept my grades just slightly above Mikayla's average.

Here I thought that by not standing out, our parents would divide their attention more evenly between Mikayla and me.

I was wrong.

For the unloved, no amount of sacrifice was good enough. Even the deepest devotion would be labeled an inconvenience.

Back home, dinner was already ready on the table.

It was Mikayla’s favorite seafood gumbo and barbecue ribs.

Tracey slipped on gloves, peeled the shrimp, and added them to Mikayla’s plate one by one.

“Dig in, Mikayla. You won’t get much of my cooking once you’re away at college.”

Cory took the most tender rib, cut the meat off the bone, and added it to Mikayla’s plate.

“If you can’t get used to the cafeteria food at Briarwood University, just give me a buzz. I’ll order takeout for you.”

Sitting across from Mikayla, Ben refilled her drink with a smile.

“I work around the area. I know all the diners around the campus. I’ll take you out for great food on weekends.”

They looked like a happy, close-knit family.

Keeping my head down, I simply took a big bite of kale on my plate.

After dinner, I retreated to my modest bedroom, a space that had been converted from a storage room.

I pulled open the very bottom drawer.

There lay a college admission letter.

The letterhead bore the prestigious name of the school.

Westbridge University.

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 10

A year went by. During my sophomore year, I received the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the fall. Recognized for my exceptional work on the research team, I was invited to participate in the professor’s independent research project ahead of schedule. Life was busy but fulfilling. Everything in the past seemed like a distant memory. One weekend night, I was reviewing data in the lab. My phone screen lit up. Someone from my high school class group had sent a screenshot. It showed an update on Cory’s social media. The attached image was a somewhat faded family portrait.Ian, Tracey, Cory, Ben, and Mikayla were captured beaming in the family portrait.I was the only person missing. The caption was, “If I could turn back time, I’d shatter every illusion just to bring back the sister we’ve lost.” The group went radio silent. No one responded to the post. I stared at the photo, feeling absolutely nothing inside. Apparently, it had been a rough

Since then, Ian and Tracey stopped showing up in my life. Apparently, Tracey fell ill upon her return. Cory was suspended from his job after making one mistake after another. However, what went on with their lives wasn’t my concern anymore. I put all my energy into my research project. Ben, however, seemed to have lost it. He became a constant presence at Westbridge University. He got off his high horse for a change, no longer making accusations against me. Eating a big piece of humble pie, Ben practiced caution around me. He would lie in wait along the route I took after class, always having an expensive gift for me. It ranged from bespoke jewelry, computers with the latest specs, to keys to a high-end apartment in Westbridge. He tried to use these long-overdue compensations to erase the years he had failed me. However, I didn’t accept a single thing from him. Each time, I kept my eyes to the front and walked past him as if he were invisible. That went on until

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 8

With Daniel showing up, he put an end to Ben’s harassment. Ben looked Daniel dead in the eye, his gaze full of hostility. “Who are you? “This is a private family matter. It’s none of your business.” Daniel didn’t even cast a glance at him. Instead, he tilted his head and stared at me, his voice calm. “Your private family matter?” “I have no family.” The words came out of my mouth without hesitation. Ben turned ashen. Paying them no mind, I turned on my heel and followed Daniel out of the backstage area. Three days later, Ian and Tracey, along with Mikayla, arrived in Westbridge. They cornered me right outside my professor’s lab building. Tracey burst into tears the moment she spotted me. She rushed over to take my hand, but I shied away from her grasp. “Kaycee, how could you be so cruel? “You ran off to Westbridge without letting us know. You didn’t even bother to call home. Do you know how worried I was?” Ian stood there, sighing. “Kaycee, it’s wond

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 7

Kaycee's POVThe pace at Westbridge University was so intense that there was no time to dwell on emotions. During the first-week placement assessment, I ranked first in the entire school. Daniel approached me with my results and placed a thick folder of research materials on my desk.“Your ability to analyze complex problems hasn’t gone unnoticed. Professor Haynes would like to know whether you’re open to joining his research lab as an undergraduate assistant.” Daniel slid gold-rimmed glasses up his nose, his tone indifferent. “It will be grueling. You won’t get the weekends off.” I took the job without hesitation. “Hard work is the one thing that doesn’t scare me.” Two weeks later, Westbridge University held its annual freshman convocation. As the freshman representative, I was scheduled to close the ceremony with an academic presentation. All seats in the auditorium were filled. Dressed in a tailored black suit jacket, I stepped onto the stage into the spotlight.

The sun at the gate of Briarwood University was brutal.Ben and Cory stood under the shade of the tree, their faces menacing. “Where could Kaycee have gone?” Frustrated, Cory kicked a pebble into the curb. “She barely has any money on her. She doesn’t even have decent luggage.”Ben pulled himself together. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Since she received an admission letter, the school is bound to have her student records. “Get in touch with her guidance counselor. They’ll know which college she committed to.”Sinking back to reality, Cory took out his phone and made the call. On the other end of the line, the guidance counselor couldn’t hide her joy and surprise in her voice. “Goodness, Cory. Are you asking about Kaycee? Isn’t she with you? “Oh, I was just about to call to congratulate Kaycee. “Kaycee is so low-key about the good news. She was the highest scorer in the state and kept it to herself. She didn’t even attend the graduation honors ceremony.” Cor

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 5

Westbridge University’s freshman check-in was set up on the lawn outside the Student Center.Long welcome banners stretched across the walkways, and student volunteers in brightly colored T-shirts were everywhere, helping new arrivals.Pulling my worn old suitcase behind me, I made my way to the School of Finance’s check-in booth. The person in charge of registrations was a guy in rimless glasses. He wore a plain white shirt, his expression icy. His jaw tensed hard as he examined the list in his hand. “Hello there, your photo ID and admission confirmation, please.” His husky voice was distant and business-like. I handed them over. His eyes flicked from my name to the computer screen. His fingers paused, hovering over the keyboard. He snapped his head up, his profound eyes studying me for two seconds through his rimless glasses. “Kaycee Tuttle? That state’s top scorer?” Several upperclassmen who had been helping freshmen unload their cars immediately turned to look at
