Kaycee's POV“Kaycee, why are you paying for the purchase yourself?” My brother, Cory Tuttle, pressed my phone down before I could tap it against the machine. “Mikayla’s used bedding doesn’t have a hole or anything. Layered on top of the letter was a copy of an acceptance letter to Briarwood University. It so happened that the move-in day for both Briarwood University and Westbridge University was on the same day.I crumpled the photocopy sheet and tossed it into the wastebasket. The next day was the weekend. The Tuttles were throwing a party to celebrate the college admissions. Family and friends flooded our living room first thing in the morning to offer their best wishes. “Mikayla did amazingly well to get into Briarwood University. That night, the whole family started packing their bags. Three massive pink suitcases were laid out across the living room floor. Tracey was busy stuffing piles of new clothes into them. “Mikayla, bring this cashmere top along. Winter in Briarwood can be brutal. “Don’t forget these luxury treats. You can snack on them when you have a late-night craving in the dorms.” Cory hovered over the table, focused on lining up the screen protector on Mikayla's new tablet.“Mikayla, I downloaded a ton of shows for you. The dawn broke at half-past six. Dragging along the old suitcase with squeaky wheels, I left home. The living room was dead silent. Last night, the family was up until late, helping Mikayla with all the packing. They must be fast asleep at the moment. I didn’t leave a note or say my goodbyes. Hailing a cab to the train station, I arrived at the platform in time for ticket inspection. I took the seat by the window, and the train began to pull away. The scenery outside the window began to race away from me as I left the city I had lived in for eighteen years behind me. I took out my phone and switched it on. Kaycee's POVThe pace at Westbridge University was so intense that there was no time to dwell on emotions. During the first-week placement assessment, I ranked first in the entire school. Daniel approached me with my results and placed a thick folder of research materials on my desk.“Your ability to analyze complex problems hasn’t gone unnoticed. Professor Haynes would like to know whether you’re open to joining his research lab as an undergraduate assistant.” Daniel slid gold-rimmed glasses up his nose, his tone indifferent. “It will be grueling. You won’t get the weekends off.” I took the job without hesitation. “Hard work is the one thing that doesn’t scare me.” Two weeks later, Westbridge University held its annual freshman convocation.As the freshman representative, I was scheduled to close the ceremony with an academic presentation. All seats in the auditorium were filled. Dressed in a tailored black suit jacket, I stepped onto the stage into the spotlight.

With Daniel showing up, he put an end to Ben’s harassment. Ben looked Daniel dead in the eye, his gaze full of hostility. “Who are you? “This is a private family matter. Paying them no mind, I turned on my heel and followed Daniel out of the backstage area. Three days later, Ian and Tracey, along with Mikayla, arrived in Westbridge. They cornered me right outside my professor’s lab building. Tracey burst into tears the moment she spotted me. Since then, Ian and Tracey stopped showing up in my life. Apparently, Tracey fell ill upon her return. Cory was suspended from his job after making one mistake after another. However, what went on with their lives wasn’t my concern anymore. I put all my energy into my research project. Ben, however, seemed to have lost it. He became a constant presence at Westbridge University. He got off his high horse for a change, no longer making accusations against me. Eating a big piece of humble pie, Ben practiced caution around me. He would lie in wait along the route I took after class, always having an expensive gift for me. It ranged from bespoke jewelry, computers with the latest specs, to keys to a high-end apartment in Westbridge. He tried to use these long-overdue compensations to erase the years he had failed me.
