Chapter 3

작가: Pumpkin Babe
That night, the whole family started packing their bags.

Three massive pink suitcases were laid out across the living room floor.

Tracey was busy stuffing piles of new clothes into them.

“Mikayla, bring this cashmere top along. Winter in Briarwood can be brutal.

“Don’t forget these luxury treats. You can snack on them when you have a late-night craving in the dorms.”

Cory hovered over the table, focused on lining up the screen protector on Mikayla's new tablet.

“Mikayla, I downloaded a ton of shows for you. You can watch them to kill time.”

Mikayla sat on the couch, dangling her feet and smiling like Little Miss Sunshine.

“Thank you, Mom. Thank you, Cory.”

I walked around the three huge trunks to get to the storage room.

From the space under my bed, I pulled out an old gray suitcase.

It was the suitcase I'd used since my boarding school days. The wheels had grown stiff over the years, letting out a creaky squeak whenever I gave the suitcase a pull.

I opened my closet and took out my washed-out T-shirts and jeans to fold and pack into the bag.

Then, I tucked my newly purchased bed linen right at the bottom.

Lastly, I picked up the admission letter to Westbridge University with utmost care and slipped it between the pages of my journal. I tucked the book into my backpack.

I couldn’t even fill half the suitcase with my few belongings.

As I pulled the zipper, Ben opened the door and sauntered right in.

He glanced at my deflated luggage.

“Kaycee, is that all you’re packing?”

“Yes.”

I didn’t even look up.

He approached me, his voice bursting with entitlement.

“I’m driving Mikayla to Briarwood University tomorrow at eight in the morning. Cory and I are going to help her with her luggage.

“Mikayla gets motion sickness, so we can’t pack the car with too many people. With Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle joining us, all the seats are taken.”

He paused as if weighing his words.

“Since you packed light, you can take a coach at the bus terminal.

“You’ve always been independent. I’m sure you have no issues getting to the school yourself, right?”

I paused, my hand still on the zipper.

Picking my head up, I met his gaze in silence.

I first met Ben when I was eight.

As Tracey bought the last doll in the display window for Mikayla, I huddled in the corner of the backyard, sweeping in secret.

Back then, Ben handed me a piece of candy and said earnestly in his boyish voice, “If no one else is on your side, I will be.”

For ten long years, those innocent childhood words were the only thing that kept me going through my darkest days.

Yet now, all I clung to was a cruel illusion.

It was a two-hour drive from home to Briarwood University.

The bus route was not very straightforward. It would take three connections and half a day to get to the destination.

To ensure Mikayla had a comfortable ride, Ben ditched me to navigate the public transportation on my own.

Before, I would feel hurt and demand to know why he had forgotten his promise.

Yet now, all I felt was relief.

Lucky for me, Ben wasn’t going to give me a ride.

“Alright.”

Ben froze.

He had a whole speech ready to make me feel better, but he never got a chance to say any of it.

Ben stared at my emotionless face and added. “Mikayla has never traveled so far from home before. She needs someone by her side.”

I closed my backpack, then put it on the desk.

“You don’t have to explain. I get it.”

“I’m glad you see things my way.”

He took a long, hard look at me before heaving a sigh of relief. Turning on his heel, he exited my room.

“Mikayla, I’ve put your neck pillow in the car.”

His voice boomed in the living space, wrapped once again in that sweetness.

I closed the door, shutting out the cheers and laughter.

Retrieving my phone, I tapped on the ticketing app.

I’d be taking the train to Westbridge at seven the next morning.

The screen showed that my ticket had been issued successfully.

I turned off my phone and sprawled across my stiff bed before closing my eyes.

This was my last night in this house.

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 10

A year went by. During my sophomore year, I received the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the fall. Recognized for my exceptional work on the research team, I was invited to participate in the professor’s independent research project ahead of schedule. Life was busy but fulfilling. Everything in the past seemed like a distant memory. One weekend night, I was reviewing data in the lab. My phone screen lit up. Someone from my high school class group had sent a screenshot. It showed an update on Cory’s social media. The attached image was a somewhat faded family portrait.Ian, Tracey, Cory, Ben, and Mikayla were captured beaming in the family portrait.I was the only person missing. The caption was, “If I could turn back time, I’d shatter every illusion just to bring back the sister we’ve lost.” The group went radio silent. No one responded to the post. I stared at the photo, feeling absolutely nothing inside. Apparently, it had been a rough

Since then, Ian and Tracey stopped showing up in my life. Apparently, Tracey fell ill upon her return. Cory was suspended from his job after making one mistake after another. However, what went on with their lives wasn’t my concern anymore. I put all my energy into my research project. Ben, however, seemed to have lost it. He became a constant presence at Westbridge University. He got off his high horse for a change, no longer making accusations against me. Eating a big piece of humble pie, Ben practiced caution around me. He would lie in wait along the route I took after class, always having an expensive gift for me. It ranged from bespoke jewelry, computers with the latest specs, to keys to a high-end apartment in Westbridge. He tried to use these long-overdue compensations to erase the years he had failed me. However, I didn’t accept a single thing from him. Each time, I kept my eyes to the front and walked past him as if he were invisible. That went on until

With Daniel showing up, he put an end to Ben’s harassment. Ben looked Daniel dead in the eye, his gaze full of hostility. “Who are you? “This is a private family matter. It’s none of your business.” Daniel didn’t even cast a glance at him. Instead, he tilted his head and stared at me, his voice calm. “Your private family matter?” “I have no family.” The words came out of my mouth without hesitation. Ben turned ashen. Paying them no mind, I turned on my heel and followed Daniel out of the backstage area. Three days later, Ian and Tracey, along with Mikayla, arrived in Westbridge. They cornered me right outside my professor’s lab building. Tracey burst into tears the moment she spotted me. She rushed over to take my hand, but I shied away from her grasp. “Kaycee, how could you be so cruel? “You ran off to Westbridge without letting us know. You didn’t even bother to call home. Do you know how worried I was?” Ian stood there, sighing. “Kaycee, it’s wond

Kaycee's POVThe pace at Westbridge University was so intense that there was no time to dwell on emotions. During the first-week placement assessment, I ranked first in the entire school. Daniel approached me with my results and placed a thick folder of research materials on my desk.“Your ability to analyze complex problems hasn’t gone unnoticed. Professor Haynes would like to know whether you’re open to joining his research lab as an undergraduate assistant.” Daniel slid gold-rimmed glasses up his nose, his tone indifferent. “It will be grueling. You won’t get the weekends off.” I took the job without hesitation. “Hard work is the one thing that doesn’t scare me.” Two weeks later, Westbridge University held its annual freshman convocation. As the freshman representative, I was scheduled to close the ceremony with an academic presentation. All seats in the auditorium were filled. Dressed in a tailored black suit jacket, I stepped onto the stage into the spotlight.

The sun at the gate of Briarwood University was brutal.Ben and Cory stood under the shade of the tree, their faces menacing. “Where could Kaycee have gone?” Frustrated, Cory kicked a pebble into the curb. “She barely has any money on her. She doesn’t even have decent luggage.”Ben pulled himself together. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Since she received an admission letter, the school is bound to have her student records. “Get in touch with her guidance counselor. They’ll know which college she committed to.”Sinking back to reality, Cory took out his phone and made the call. On the other end of the line, the guidance counselor couldn’t hide her joy and surprise in her voice. “Goodness, Cory. Are you asking about Kaycee? Isn’t she with you? “Oh, I was just about to call to congratulate Kaycee. “Kaycee is so low-key about the good news. She was the highest scorer in the state and kept it to herself. She didn’t even attend the graduation honors ceremony.” Cor

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 5

Westbridge University’s freshman check-in was set up on the lawn outside the Student Center.Long welcome banners stretched across the walkways, and student volunteers in brightly colored T-shirts were everywhere, helping new arrivals.Pulling my worn old suitcase behind me, I made my way to the School of Finance’s check-in booth. The person in charge of registrations was a guy in rimless glasses. He wore a plain white shirt, his expression icy. His jaw tensed hard as he examined the list in his hand. “Hello there, your photo ID and admission confirmation, please.” His husky voice was distant and business-like. I handed them over. His eyes flicked from my name to the computer screen. His fingers paused, hovering over the keyboard. He snapped his head up, his profound eyes studying me for two seconds through his rimless glasses. “Kaycee Tuttle? That state’s top scorer?” Several upperclassmen who had been helping freshmen unload their cars immediately turned to look at
