Chapter 4

작가: Pumpkin Babe
The dawn broke at half-past six.

Dragging along the old suitcase with squeaky wheels, I left home.

The living room was dead silent.

Last night, the family was up until late, helping Mikayla with all the packing. They must be fast asleep at the moment.

I didn’t leave a note or say my goodbyes.

Hailing a cab to the train station, I arrived at the platform in time for ticket inspection.

I took the seat by the window, and the train began to pull away.

The scenery outside the window began to race away from me as I left the city I had lived in for eighteen years behind me.

I took out my phone and switched it on.

The moment the screen lit up, a flurry of messages bombarded my phone.

In the group chat named “One Big Happy Family”, Tracey posted a photo.

Mikayla, sitting in the front passenger seat of Ben’s car, held up a peace sign with a sweet smile.

Tracey: “Kaycee, have you boarded the bus?”

Tracey: “Get to Mikayla’s dorm to set her up once you’re there. She doesn’t know how to make her own bed yet.”

Cory sent a voice note.

“Kaycee, get some food at the cafeteria once you’re there. Mikayla won’t have much of an appetite because of the car ride. Grab her some chicken soup and bring it over to her dorm.”

I read all the entitled demands, a smirk playing across my lips.

To them, I wasn’t going to college to get an education. I was there to act as Mikayla’s full-time nanny.

Not bothering to reply, I simply muted the group chat.

Two hours later, a message from Ben slipped into my DMs.

“Where are you, Kaycee?

“We’ve reached the main gate of Briarwood University. Mikayla has too much luggage to handle on her own. Come over and help with the move.

“Quit playing games and ignoring our calls. It’s a hot day. Are you expecting Mikayla to get heatstroke standing in the open sun?”

I stared at text bubbles popping up one after another.

Ben’s smug, entitled face came to mind.

He was probably certain that I would swallow my pain and simply do as he told me to.

I shifted my gaze out the window.

As the train began to decelerate, the sweet voice of the train attendant filled the air.

“Dear passengers, we are now approaching Westbridge South Station…”

I opened my chat window with Ben and typed on the screen.

“I’m not at Briarwood University.”

Almost immediately, I received his reply.

Ben: “What’s your problem this time? If not in BU, where are you now?”

Ben: “I’m warning you, Kaycee. It’s move-in day today. Don’t test my patience.”

I grinned.

That was when my communication stopped. I tapped on his contact profile.

Ben was now added to my blocked contacts.

I then blocked Cory, Tracey, and Ian.

Once they had been removed from my contacts, I pulled the old SIM card out of my phone.

I tossed it in a nearby trash can.

From now on, the spineless Kaycee, desperate for the Tuttles’ love, no longer existed.

Luggage in hand, I strutted out of the train station.

September in Westbridge was drenched in golden sunlight.

Drawing a deep breath, I flagged down a cab.

“To Westbridge University.”

The car merged into the traffic.

I stared at the unfamiliar streets outside the car window while clutching my admission letter inside my backpack.

It had been eighteen years.

Finally, I could just be myself.

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 10

A year went by. During my sophomore year, I received the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the fall. Recognized for my exceptional work on the research team, I was invited to participate in the professor’s independent research project ahead of schedule. Life was busy but fulfilling. Everything in the past seemed like a distant memory. One weekend night, I was reviewing data in the lab. My phone screen lit up. Someone from my high school class group had sent a screenshot. It showed an update on Cory’s social media. The attached image was a somewhat faded family portrait.Ian, Tracey, Cory, Ben, and Mikayla were captured beaming in the family portrait.I was the only person missing. The caption was, “If I could turn back time, I’d shatter every illusion just to bring back the sister we’ve lost.” The group went radio silent. No one responded to the post. I stared at the photo, feeling absolutely nothing inside. Apparently, it had been a rough

Since then, Ian and Tracey stopped showing up in my life. Apparently, Tracey fell ill upon her return. Cory was suspended from his job after making one mistake after another. However, what went on with their lives wasn’t my concern anymore. I put all my energy into my research project. Ben, however, seemed to have lost it. He became a constant presence at Westbridge University. He got off his high horse for a change, no longer making accusations against me. Eating a big piece of humble pie, Ben practiced caution around me. He would lie in wait along the route I took after class, always having an expensive gift for me. It ranged from bespoke jewelry, computers with the latest specs, to keys to a high-end apartment in Westbridge. He tried to use these long-overdue compensations to erase the years he had failed me. However, I didn’t accept a single thing from him. Each time, I kept my eyes to the front and walked past him as if he were invisible. That went on until

With Daniel showing up, he put an end to Ben’s harassment. Ben looked Daniel dead in the eye, his gaze full of hostility. “Who are you? “This is a private family matter. It’s none of your business.” Daniel didn’t even cast a glance at him. Instead, he tilted his head and stared at me, his voice calm. “Your private family matter?” “I have no family.” The words came out of my mouth without hesitation. Ben turned ashen. Paying them no mind, I turned on my heel and followed Daniel out of the backstage area. Three days later, Ian and Tracey, along with Mikayla, arrived in Westbridge. They cornered me right outside my professor’s lab building. Tracey burst into tears the moment she spotted me. She rushed over to take my hand, but I shied away from her grasp. “Kaycee, how could you be so cruel? “You ran off to Westbridge without letting us know. You didn’t even bother to call home. Do you know how worried I was?” Ian stood there, sighing. “Kaycee, it’s wond

Kaycee's POVThe pace at Westbridge University was so intense that there was no time to dwell on emotions. During the first-week placement assessment, I ranked first in the entire school. Daniel approached me with my results and placed a thick folder of research materials on my desk.“Your ability to analyze complex problems hasn’t gone unnoticed. Professor Haynes would like to know whether you’re open to joining his research lab as an undergraduate assistant.” Daniel slid gold-rimmed glasses up his nose, his tone indifferent. “It will be grueling. You won’t get the weekends off.” I took the job without hesitation. “Hard work is the one thing that doesn’t scare me.” Two weeks later, Westbridge University held its annual freshman convocation. As the freshman representative, I was scheduled to close the ceremony with an academic presentation. All seats in the auditorium were filled. Dressed in a tailored black suit jacket, I stepped onto the stage into the spotlight.

The sun at the gate of Briarwood University was brutal.Ben and Cory stood under the shade of the tree, their faces menacing. “Where could Kaycee have gone?” Frustrated, Cory kicked a pebble into the curb. “She barely has any money on her. She doesn’t even have decent luggage.”Ben pulled himself together. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Since she received an admission letter, the school is bound to have her student records. “Get in touch with her guidance counselor. They’ll know which college she committed to.”Sinking back to reality, Cory took out his phone and made the call. On the other end of the line, the guidance counselor couldn’t hide her joy and surprise in her voice. “Goodness, Cory. Are you asking about Kaycee? Isn’t she with you? “Oh, I was just about to call to congratulate Kaycee. “Kaycee is so low-key about the good news. She was the highest scorer in the state and kept it to herself. She didn’t even attend the graduation honors ceremony.” Cor

  • The Blue Sheets   Chapter 5

Westbridge University’s freshman check-in was set up on the lawn outside the Student Center.Long welcome banners stretched across the walkways, and student volunteers in brightly colored T-shirts were everywhere, helping new arrivals.Pulling my worn old suitcase behind me, I made my way to the School of Finance’s check-in booth. The person in charge of registrations was a guy in rimless glasses. He wore a plain white shirt, his expression icy. His jaw tensed hard as he examined the list in his hand. “Hello there, your photo ID and admission confirmation, please.” His husky voice was distant and business-like. I handed them over. His eyes flicked from my name to the computer screen. His fingers paused, hovering over the keyboard. He snapped his head up, his profound eyes studying me for two seconds through his rimless glasses. “Kaycee Tuttle? That state’s top scorer?” Several upperclassmen who had been helping freshmen unload their cars immediately turned to look at
