I stood up. My legs were still shaking. "What makes you think I'm capable —"

"There's a criminal in every man. I'm not here for a sob speech, Charlotte. I need you out in a month."

"How?" I asked. My restraints were gone, but every word he said still cut.

He looked at my belly, and quickly looked away. Something told me that he knew but I pushed the thoughts away and steadied myself at the edge of the table

"You know what, Gabriel? I'd rather serve life with a clear conscience than lie my way out. If no one else believes me, Lizzie knows I would never hurt her in a thousand lifetimes."

"Touching." He made a face like he was going to be sad, then dropped it. "The bars are still locked against your freedom, Penelope — I mean, Charlotte."

The name stopped my breath.

Penelope.

The name Marshall had said while inside me that night in the hotel, his forehead pressed against mine, his voice rough as he came. I didn't know who Penelope was then.

And now Gabriel said it too.

Everything I ever loved went to someone else. Mom's love went to Diana. My books went to Elizabeth. And now the two men I ever knew both said the same woman's name.

I have always been the one who called first. Who waited. Who ran the errands no one else would. I wanted Mom to feel my sincerity. I wanted Elizabeth to admit she took my story and give it back. I wanted Gabriel to know me and love me.

I lost every time.

"You should leave," I said calmly, but my voice cracked. "Visiting hours are over."

"Charlotte —"

"Please. Go."

He didn't hesitate. The door jammed and his footsteps faded.

I sank to my knees and held my chest. My future flashed in my eyes. No job, no sister, a baby in jail.

“Everything I held dear had been taken. Why should my life go too, for a crime I couldn't imagine?” I muttered under my breath and then I touched my belly.

"Heavens. No. I won't lose her too."

"Lizzie," I sobbed, my nose blocked, eyes pouring. "I could never do this to you. You know me. For my baby's sake, help me. I cannot lose her as well."

"If you can hear me, help me find who did this before the hearing.”

One moment I was on the cold floor begging my late sister for help. The next moment, I had a dream where Lizzie planted a kiss on my forehead.

I woke up about to marry my sister's husband.

"Breathe," I heard a man say.

It was low and close, and at the same time, I felt a man's large, rough hands cupping my face.

I opened my eyes to daylight. For the first few seconds, the light was blinding. I lifted a hand to shield my face from it and tried to sit up.

Music swelled around me. An orchestra playing an interlude too long, like they were waiting for someone to remember her line. Behind it, I could hear indistinct chatter. Not panic. It sounded like a celebration.

White flowers lined the walkway, from the front of the altar all the way to the rows.

I tried to sit up but my feet hurt. I looked down and met a wedding dress.

Vekee James lace. Long sleeves and tight at the waist. The dress Elizabeth cried over for a month because she thought it wouldn't be delivered in time. The dress I steamed for her while she told me how to do it properly.

I was wearing it and my ankles were shaking in stilettos. I never wear heels. Not ever.

"Liz, you'll be fine," the man said.

Liz is my sister's name. I'm Charlotte. We are triplets with Diana, but we are not identical. My face is oval. My hair is short and dark.

The hair falling down my back was long, curled, and light brown. Like Lizzie's.

I snapped my head up at the man and met a black suit that probably cost as much as my tuition. Striking in the way that makes you stare even when you don't want to with a thin scar running down the side of his left eye. The same way he looked the night we met at the Bougainvillea hotel before he knew me as his wife's sister.

Marshall.

"Marshall?" I said, and my voice came out breathy. Definitely not mine.

Behind him was a wedding arch covered in white roses, and a priest who wouldn't look at me, with sweat beaded on his forehead.

Marshall held out his hand. On his palm, a diamond ring.

Elizabeth's ring. The ring that went missing after her killer cut off her fingers. The same ring Mom asked me to return in the interrogation room.

Her eyes scanned my face and travelled to Marshall. He grunted and sighed.“She passed out many times on the wedding day. She might not remember.” He explained to her, then turned his attention back to Diana, who had been glaring at me like I was about to ruin something dear to her.“Pity. She’s such a good kid.” The woman commented and motioned to a spot at the dining table, across from Marshall. Not next to him.“Has she seen a doctor?” She asked Marshall, her eyes steady, like she dared him to say no.“I’m healthy, Ashanti. You have nothing to worry about. Just a little lapse of memory…” My breath caught in my throat. She smiled, and for the first time, Marshall exhaled like I had just saved him from death itself. But I knew her name from a memory that was not mine.“I’m glad to hear that,” she said and clapped twice. The hurried feet of maids filled my ears while I struggled to keep my focus on her. “I was worried when I heard rumours that you took your sister’s place…”My eyes sn

“Marshall.” I called out solemnly after failing to shush Gabriel. “I didn’t notice you coming.”“Obviously!” He intoned, then rasped Gabriel’s name.“Mr. Washington, I have gotten the address. Thanks for stopping by.”My throat tightened. I heard Gabriel swallow loudly, and when my eyes darted to his face, a narrow stream of sweat was streaking down the side of his ear.“Get in,” Marshall ordered, and went round to the driver’s seat. The rumble of the engine shook through my bones before it made me scramble into the car.He drove past green groves, fast enough that the trees blurred into a single green wall. His fingers were clenched white around the steering wheel while driving. The hum of other vehicles faded behind us, and just then, he slammed the brakes. The tyres screeched. The Maybach fishtailed, the back end swinging before the brakes caught and the car shuddered to a stop. My seatbelt cut into my chest and my stomach dropped as if the road had disappeared beneath us.I tried

Something dropped inside me.For the first few minutes, I laughed. It sounded dry and humorless even to me. My fists tightened. My mind went blank, like ink slowly vanishing from a page."She died this morning?" I asked, my lips parted. "Do you even hear yourself?"I wanted to nod and leave, but the thrumming in my ears wouldn't let me.My body was my only way home. I couldn't accept that it would just die. That would mean I was locked in this body forever. Stuck here with no chance of becoming me again. Which body would I return to?That couldn't happen."I went upstairs when I heard the dog barking. There was nothing I could do. I took her to the morgue," Mom explained and it landed on me like the weight of the whole world."I'm in a morgue? She died this morning and you already took her to the morgue? Not even a hospital?"The more I tried to breathe, the more my lungs burned. My ribs felt wrapped in barbed wire. My hands flew to my head on their own, and I tried to inhale again wi

When I first went over the incidents surrounding Elizabeth's death, even during the court hearing, I thought Diana was responsible. Every clue I had pointed to her. She had tried to end my life once. She could have done the same to Elizabeth. Then I thought about Marshall's involvement as well, alongside her. But she would be stupid to get her hands dirty if Lizzie's fortune already said she would die.And Diana was anything but stupid."It can't be her," I thought. “Could it be Marshall?”I shook my head, as if that could dislodge the idea. The faster I found my answers, the better. Staying in this body playing the role of Marshall's wife. I couldn't accept that. Not after he accused me of my sister's death and promised to make sure I rotted in jail. When Marshall came downstairs, I watched Diana follow him to the car, expecting her to sit next to him. Instead, she went to the back. I got in next to her and turned towards the window. A moment later, I realized we hadn't moved. When

I took a step and a thread of memory untangled in my head. It played like a scene in front of me, like the rest of the memories I have been getting since I woke up in her body, but I knew it wasn't mine. This was Elizabeth's.Marshall hugging Diana from behind. Diana stealing kisses from him. And one of them making out on the same cushion where they're seated. My chest burned."Diana wouldn't do this," I told myself. "She wouldn't spit in our sister's face this way."I forced myself to keep walking and said hello, like I was back in a classroom about to ask an obvious question. My heartbeat thrummed, unable to keep still. My nails dug into my palms, and every breath I took felt like a burn in my throat. They turned. But they didn't look guilty or surprised. They looked annoyed, like I was meddling in their business. That was when it struck me. Lizzie had been a placeholder in her own marriage. That realization took a toll on me. The wedding she had wanted so badly had been a lie. A

I gripped tightly to the wedding dress, and everything went dark before me.I woke up with no idea how long I had been asleep. Sunbeams cut through the curtains and fell across the white sheets covering me from the waist down. The bed was too comfortable. That was what set off the alarm in my head.I sat up and looked around the room. The wedding dress was on a mannequin that had been made to look like Elizabeth. From the rich scent of lavender in the air, to the luxurious balcony connected directly to the bedroom, to the intricate gold designs on the white curtains, I knew where I was. This had to be Marshall's house. He wasn't just old money, Marshall fought his way up the ladder in tech and the military."So the wedding is over," I thought and ran a hand over my hair.My sister's hair. It was smooth as silk, longer than what I was used to, and it smelled like her shampoo. Thanks to me, it was disheveled. I am not a good sleeper.I inhaled, and a fragment from the short dream wher
