POV: Chloe

The lights across the marketing floor flickered out, one by one.

The only thing cutting through the gloom was the bluish glare of my monitor. It felt cold. Clinical. Just like the silence in this building after 6:00 p.m.

I slid my designer bag over my shoulder, taking my time. My eyes scanned the rows of empty cubicles, finally landing on the glass partition of the admin wing.

Evelyn’s desk was spotless. Her chair was tucked in with that annoying, perfect precision of hers.

POV: Evelyn ReeveThe morning in Miami usually hums with the gentle rhythm of the Atlantic breeze filtering through the shutters.Today, however, the air inside Shae’s living room felt heavy. Stagnant. Like the pressure before a hurricane.Shae was pacing a frantic line in front of the sofa, her phone gripped so tight her knuckles were white. The sharp clack-clack-clack of her heels against the marble floor grated on my nerves, echoing the erratic beating of my own heart. On one hand, a VIP client from New York had just moved their meeting up to this morning—a career-making opportunity she couldn't afford to ghost. On the other hand, there was me.I was curled into the corner of the sectional, clutching a grey throw pillow to my chest like a riot shield. I tried to force a smile, but I could feel how brittle it was."Shae, just go," I said, my voice thin. My fingers were trembling beneath the fabric of the pillow. "Serious

She looked at Noelle and Kendrick—who should have been enjoying their weekend—then at Shae, then at me. I could see the thought spiral in her eyes. She thought she was a plague."I'm sorry..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm so sorry, Noelle... Kendrick... you shouldn't be here for this. Shae... I’m bringing this into your house. I’m making your life a mess.""Evie, stop. Just stop," Noelle said softly."It’s my fault," Evelyn shook her head, tears finally spilling onto her lap."I shouldn't have come to Florida. I shouldn't have run. Archer found me... he’s not going to stop. I’m going to ruin all of you."I started to stand, the urge to tell her she wasn't a burden nearly choking me, but Kendrick caught my arm. He shook his head slightly. Let her get it out."I’m scared..." she sobbed, the sound raw and ugly."I’m scared he’ll hurt you too. He’s out of his mind... he’s obsessed. Those roses..."The room went quiet aga

POV: JovanThe ride back to Shae’s place felt like a funeral procession. Usually, I’d find some excuse to tease her about how my helmet swallowed her whole, or we’d be arguing about whether to grab Thai or Italian for dinner. I’d feel her arms—tentative, soft—looping around my waist as the bike leaned into the curves of the Miami coast. Not today. There was only the guttural thrum of the engine and the salt-heavy wind of Sanur biting at my skin. It felt cold. Wrong.I kept cutting my eyes to the side mirror. I wasn't checking for cops or lane-splitters. I was looking at the woman behind me.Evelyn wasn't holding on.Her hands were flat against her thighs, her fingers frantically twisting the hem of her blouse in a rhythmic, obsessive motion that made my chest tighten. Her gaze was hollow, fixed on the asphalt rushing beneath us as if she were trying to find a way to disappear into it.Archer, you son of a bitch. Before we’d lef

SLAM.I threw myself into the furthest stall and slid the lock home.I collapsed onto the closed lid, my fingers clawing into my scalp. The world was spinning, and the only thing I could hear was the harsh, rattling sound of my own panic."He's here... he knows..." I choked out, the tears finally breaking through.Every ounce of safety I’d fought for in Miami was gone. The ocean air, the new job, Jovan—it all felt like a house of cards that Archer had just blown down with a single bunch of dead flowers.Outside the stall, the door creaked."Evie! Open up! It’s Maya. Please, just talk to us!"I couldn't. I just buried my face in my hands and sobbed, trying to keep the sound small, trying to disappear into the tile.Near the elevators, the doors chimed.Jovan stepped out, looking every bit the high-powered executive in his tailored charcoal suit. He was checking a file, looking relaxed&mdash

POV: Evelyn ReeveThe past week had been a masterclass in performance art.I laughed at Shae’s jokes during our morning coffee, played the role of the blushing bride-to-be in iMessage threads with Noelle, and sent Jovan endless strings of heart emojis as if my world were made of sunshine and expensive champagne. But the moment the deadbolt clicked in my apartment and the lights went out, the mask didn't just slip.It shattered. For the last two nights, I’d been a ghost in my own bed, curled under the duvet with my eyes fixed on the window. Every rattle of the glass from the wind felt like a footstep. Every vibration of my phone felt like a detonator.I was living on caffeine and adrenaline, waiting for the other shoe—or rather, Archer’s next threat—to drop.Monday morning arrived with a brutal, unforgiving glare.Shae’s car pulled up to the Meridian Miami drop-off with its usual

"I’ll wait," he whispered. "I’ll wait until your heart is ready, and until all those shadows in your head finally clear out."He gave me a small, knowing smile, his eyes drifting for a second as if seeing a memory."The truth is, I’ve been falling for you since the day we crossed paths at the airport. Seeing you stand your ground while you were clearly hurting... watching you try to shield yourself from that man... I knew then. I wanted to be the one standing in front of you."I gasped. Since then? Before the office?"So, until you tell me to walk away—until you truly say no—my heart is staying exactly where it is. Right here, with you."I let the tears come then, silent and relieving. I flipped my hand over, gripping his fingers with a desperation that surprised me. He was the only thing keeping me from being swept away by the storm Archer was brewing."Thank you, Jovan... thank you," I choked out.
