Melvin Baker was their neighbor and his sister, Shelly was her classmate so he often visited them. Their families were not exactly friends but neither were they, enemies.
“Hey, Darcy! Done with your work?” He looked around curiously and then asked. “Have the new buyers left?”
Darcy was surprised as to how he came to know about it and then said. “Yes, he just left. How come you know about it?”
“Was that black Bentley his that left a while ago?” Melvin asked with a hint of jealousy underlying his tone. “I was at the nearby café and saw it leaving.” He explained when he the suspicious looks on Darcy’s face.
“Yes, it was his,” Darcy confirmed.
“Well, today I was crossing the manor and saw that it has been repainted and looks like people are ready to move in,” Melvin explained.
Darcy just stared at him for some time thinking about what he had just said.
“I am sorry Darcy! Melvin apologized immediately after he saw Darcy’s gloomy expression. “I shouldn’t have mentioned it, knowing how to hurt you were when you sold it to that Harris fellow. “But sooner or later they will move in.
“It's okay you don’t have to as I have moved on. I had beautiful memories of that place and that’s what matters. I am just happy that he did not demolish it altogether.” Darcy said in one breath.
Only she knew how she felt, it was very hurtful to think her grandfather’s manor had been sold out to a complete stranger. It was usually used as a guest house by the government and they got the revenues but now it was sold out because of their financial debt. At least Darcy could remember the beautiful memories of her childhood days there. She knew that her dad was happy at his own villa which he had made on his own and where he could work freely without any interference from his parents when they were alive but she had a very happy time with her grandparents in the manor so she was very reluctant to sell it. But now it was gone.
“I have heard a lot of gossip about Gale Harris he is termed as the most eligible bachelor in Ireland but he never showed any interest in marrying anyone. I wonder if he is gay.” Melvin said looking very amused and happy. He had heard from his father that his grandfather was a very shrewd businessman but after his father’s death Gale’s dad had left Michigan for good because of his lady love. But what intrigued him more was Gale returning to Michigan and re-establishing his grandfather’s old broken factory. Was there some hidden conspiracy?
Darcy turned towards him and asked. “Why are you bothered? You will be anyways leaving Michigan soon, right?”
He shook his shoulder and looked at her with warmth in his eyes. “ Well, the condition of the factory is just like yours, although we are not in debt like you, comically we are not that stable and if I take the job in New York I will get paid really well. In that way, I could work there for a few years and then return. I can’t help it, Darcy.” He added resentfully.
Darcy felt uncomfortable, whenever she spoke anything about Baker’s company. She somehow felt that Melvin could make a turnover and save his company from closing down but he had already received a job offer from a prestigious company in New York and they were paying him well. So he decided to leave after all the economy of Michigan was deteriorating day by day.
Although they were business rivals they had grown up together and attended the same school. Melvin was senior to her and his sister Shelly Baker. Shelly was her only friend in Michigan. Melvin’s father was a very ruthless businessman, who would do anything to get what he wants so Darcy rarely went to their house but Melvin was closer to her brother Louis when he was around so he came to their house very often.
“But surely your father wants you to stay back,” Darcy asked curiously.
“Well, yes he does, but you know you know our ideas don’t match and we both have a different way of thinking, so I don’t think it would matter.”
“But isn’t it your duty as a son to stand by your father?” Darcy said.
“I know I do but apart from my responsibility as a son I have another reason to stay back in Michigan.” He said softly, standing very close to her.
And Darcy looked at him nervously and asked. “And what’s that?”
“I am willing to stay back if you agree to marry me.” He said and drew her closer to him but Darcy pulled away from him instantly.
“Melvin, you know I can’t think of marriage right now there are so many things going on in my family so please don’t ask me to do something which I can’t promise. I don’t have time for it.”
Melvin was shocked at her rebellious behaviour and then said. “I can't see any reason for you refusing me after all we have known each other for many years. Marry me Darcy and we will get through this together.” He moved closer to her and pulled her tightly in his embrace. He simply could not understand why she was refusing him when he was ready to give her a bright future. “Everything will be alright darling, trust me.” He whispered in her ears huskily.
“No Melvin.” She turned towards him her eyes flashing with anger. “How can you say such a thing when there is much going on and your best friend Louis is missing? How can I think about getting married?”
“Well, there are a lot of things we can’t control Darcy but we need to move on and as for Louis he is feeling guilty right now he will come back once he gets over his depression. So don’t worry about him. And who knows, maybe if we get married he will come back happily.” He said happily holding her more tightly.
Darcy pushed him away and said. “You know what Melvin, I don’t accept you to understand how I feel but for me, there is nothing more important other than my family and till everything is not resolved in my family I cannot think of getting married.”
“Darcy what if my dad buys your company? Will you marry me then?” Melvin questioned her differently because he knew his father was thinking about it. But he wanted to let her try other buyers as well so that in the end when she had no option he would buy it at a very less price. His father was very shrewd and Melvin had known about his plan all the way long but he has been in love with Darcy for a long time and wanted to make her his. Every time he met her he felt like making love to her and today he had lost all his control.
Darcy looked at him for a long time and thought about what he had asked and she knew it really well that Victor baker had always had an evil eye for her father’s company but did actually want to buy it.
“I am not sure but I will be happy if anyone from Michigan took over the company that way I will know that it has gone into good hands and it won’t be exploited.”
He walked towards her again and pulled her in his arms again suppressing Darcy’s urges to pull away. He whispered. “You see if we marry the company will still belong to you and me. So think about it.”
Darcy knew where the conversation was headed and said. “It doesn’t matter now, I am ready to sell it to a good buyer who will promise to keep the jobs of my employees, it’s the least I can do for them.”
Melvin’s phone started buzzing and he saw that it was from his sister Shelly so he received it immediately.
After speaking for a while he hung up then turned towards Darcy and said. “Shelly had called and she told me to take you home with me as it’s been a long time since you two had met.” Darcy opened her mouth to object but Melvin added. “Just for some time, please.”
Darcy noticed that Melvin had forgotten about his proposal so she nodded her head and agreed to go along with him. She was happy that she had successfully evaded the topic again. She knew she had to get married one day but right now her priority was her family besides she had not found the right one yet and she did not feel anything for Melvin.
“Mr Harris, why did you keep your identity in the dark from Miss Fletcher, sooner or later she will know about it right?” John asked curiously after having driven out of Fletcher’s company, he was looking at his boss who was now driving the car very skillfully, and was impressed with the way he sat on the driver’s seat very majestically and he looked intoxicatingly very sexy. John gulped his saliva and wondered if I being a man could feel the aura of this man so addictive how the women around him would feel. He had been working with him for the past five years and he had nothing but admiration and respect for this guy who was so strict and disciplined towards his work but was very good to his employees. And when he decided to shift to Michigan and restart his grandfather’s business he had readily agreed to follow him to Michigan. But he was surprised when he hid his identity from Miss Fletcher and he noticed that Miss Fletcher had some grudge against his boss without even knowing him.
He has shifted most of his excellent employees from Ireland to help him settle everything in Michigan by offering them higher posts and had already started with his mission. He knew it would not be that easy to win the hearts of the people around but he was taking one step at a time to bring many changes to the economy and infrastructure of the city. And so he had taken the help of the mayor who welcomed him with open arms and was helping him side by side. But there were few who did not like what he was doing so he needed to be careful. Gale was still musing when John entered the office sharp before the allotted deadline.Gale raised his eyes as he saw his energetic assistant walking inside his office then looked at him sternly. John was nervous and wondered whether he was late and looked at the time once again. “Boss, I have found out everything about the Fletchers Company and also about the Fletchers do you want me to tell you now?” John asked his boss politely.Gale nodded his hea
Darcy liked Melvin’s company but had never given it a great deal of serious thought and certainly, she had never considered herself madly in love with him. He was undoubtedly the most handsome and eligible bachelor in the city and had been a part of her life ever since they started going to the same school. Although Melvin was three years older than her, he would always hang out with her. And he and his sister Shelly would always walk back with her from school every day. Since they went out quite often it was taken for granted that they would get married someday but she had never considered him as a necessary part of life. They reached the outskirts of the city where many private Villa and manors were located andThe Bakers and The Fletchers were neighbours, so Darcy could easily walk back home. There are many local taxis and Uber available in the city and Darcy had taken an Uber to go to the Shelly as she could walk back home from their place. The moment they entered the Villa, Shel
Victor Baker was sitting on his favourite chair and was observing Darcy who was walking towards her Villa. After a while, the figure vanished and he was in deep thought. He liked Darcy a lot as she was very beautiful and had a different temperament. He knew that his son Melvin was crazy about her but his father was very strict when it came to his marriage as he had always told him that he should marry a girl who would gain financial stability for him. And Darcy was the most eligible girl for him but the misfortune that caused their company to collapse made him think again. But he couldn’t deny that Fletcher’s could still hold on to the market if they had some financial backup. The economy of Michigan was on the verge of collapse and they would need many projects and financial help to get out of the current crisis. He was an old fox who wanted to strike when things would turn out to be very difficult for Darcy. He wanted to buy Fletcher’s company at a very low rate but Darcy decided to
As Darcy returned home she was walking very fast because of which she was breathing very very fast. It's been a long time since she had an exercise. She felt bitter and sore for a lot many reasons. She was still thinking about the way Shelley had explained about the new owner who had bought her grandfather's house. And was astonished.Indeed, she had never met him because his assistant and her lawyer had managed all the dealings. But could it be that he was the one who came to buy her company? But why hadn't he told her straight away that it was him? Why did he hide his identity? She would eventually meet him again to finalize the deal. So why would he let her think that he was someone else? It was inevitable in a small place as Michigan not to notice him. One way or the other she would have encountered him. He must be laughing at her for the way she had blotted out so many things about him. she was fuming with anger when she walked inside and saw her father sipping and enjoying his
Darcy was feeling bad now, she never expected that she would blurt out everything in front of her father. “I don't know dad, I somehow can't say anything good about him because I feel that everything we have is being taken away by him. I know it's wrong because in a way he's helping us but I feel so helpless that I can't do anything.” Darcy spoke very softly. Oliver looked at her daughter helplessly and said. Darcy my darling you need to stop reading the news about him on the internet. Sometimes what we see things is not like that and can't you see the reality, he is not taking something away from you, you are giving it to him willingly because you need his help. Stop blaming him and accept the fact that he is bringing financial help to the economy of Michigan. You should be happy that all our employees will be employed by him and they wouldn't have to go out of the city to hunt for jobs.” Darcy looked at him with sadness and said. “Dad I know, just give me some time. I think I will
With the blink of an eye, the weekend arrived, and on Sunday, early in the morning after Darcy finished her yoga she came and joined her dad who was sitting on the lawn and enjoying his morning tea.“Good morning Dad,” She said lovingly. “Good morning darling I hope you slept well today you look quite refreshed.” Oliver complimented her. “Yes I did after a long time and you won't believe I finished ten drafts overnight I hope they like my design I will be sending it officially today to mark my entry into the competition.” Oliver Fletcher smiled and said. "I am proud of you it doesn't matter whether you win or not the only thing that matters is your participation and the people you will meet there. You can gain a lot of recognition worldwide. You have already won so many awards back then Darcy, now you just need to polish it more, And oh, by the way, while you are in Paris why don't you go and meet your friend Natalia, it's been a long time since you people have met, take a holiday w
“But I can always call up Mother and tell her not to prepare so chill,” Gale suggested. "ha ha ha ha ha.." Oliver Fletcher started laughing looking at the conversation between the father and son. “Your son is a fine young man," he said praising him genuinely. “Don't flatter him too much he is the worst one around, very bossy.” Norman Harris commented. “Dad,” Gale said helplessly. "But what I said is true Normie, he saved me from the financial difficulties that I was in and whatever I say or do to thank him will never compensate for his contribution, he also brought a lot many jobs for the people here. You should be proud of him." Oliver Fletcher said with gratitude. “Yes, I am proud of him Oli but he can be a pain in the ass sometimes, and hey let us talk about us now. enough about him." Norman Harris said unhappily. Gail looked at his father helplessly. “ Uncle Oli, that's alright, please don't be so formal as we are family, and anyways I had my selfish motives as well when I
